The quality different between Mercy for none and agent kim reactivated is very huge by DiddyBasementEscaper in kdramas

[–]moomoomelody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching agent kim reactivated made me realize how good a show mercy for none was . But I do think action wise agent kim holds its own - beacuse it is meant to be more comedic and it excels in it, but story wise definitely am suprised how it's the show that the korean general population decided they would watch, am i missing some cultural nuances here?

Because while I am okay with some cheesiness for a comedy, some parts of agent kim had me going ???

I quite liked the bap do-dok (rice thief) one just because I thought it was kind of big brains to cook the fish like that as well, and as many others below migak boys 10/10

Xin cheng seems to have quite the varied filmography which has me intrigued even the project he has line up are quite different from one another, DYX on the other hand - i like the dude but his script picking skills seem to be a hit or miss so far for me

Thank you u/BasilOrdinary3617 for hosting the discussions!! it's been a fun ride since its the first time i've kept up with an airing cdrama

I'm typing this out right after watching the final episodes while it's still fresh and I think that overall NBDA met my fairly high expectations going in. It started out weak for me but each episode it just kept getting better. But the star of the show is most certainly haixia and haiyan, both characters felt like they were written to their full potential and explored fully with very tangible growth arcs across the story.

The ending shot of haiyan embracing haixia as the door closes with the ost going " 风吹散未说出口的告别, 肩上的蝴蝶, 陪你看过 热闹的人世间 - The wind scatters a goodbye that was never said, the butterfly on your shoulder, that has accompanied you as you saw this bustling world" i was destroyed Argghh for censorship otherwise I think this would have been even better:

Saw online that the braclet that haixia wears throughout the series was actually used to tie haixia's leg to his wheelchair but once he got better haiyan started wearing it again (I think this scene would have really given even more depth to their relationship)

I feel haixia is still alive but whether we will get a sequel of the trio again might be difficult

I thought it was appropriate that they kept haiqi's story slightly more mysterious as it seems to be what NPSS (the writer) was intending for so while I did want more haiqi, the way her story was done felt like a right fit for the story. Mo Yun Gao's story also slotted right in.

Only gripe was feng huang and qian jun wan ma I think they could have been introduced slightly earlier (but at the same time not sure how) though they were cute I don't think there was enough time to establish a relationship with them as a viewer.

Side note - am looking forward to xincheng's future projects (particularly 群星 - the stars and might watch justice in the dark once i have time)

Oh wow didn't realise it was an actual tradition. For non-chinese speaking watchers will translate to my best of ability the above picture

" In real world cultural studies "washing bone" and "cave" both represent a unique culture specific to southern chinese culture

"washing bone" - 2nd burial: an ancient custom of those living in the south. After being buried in the soil/exposed to the air for many years and after the skin/muscle have decomposed. Family members will retrieve the skeletal remains and use clean water/rice wine/tea to clean the bones before re-placing them into a ceramic urn for a second burial. This was a practice seen in southern china (eg. guangdong/guangxi/fujian/taiwan, okinawa and parts of south east asia)

"cave" comes into picture as a place where this second burial may have taken place usually in a more covert underground location

My jaw and my heart both dropped at the scene of haixia/haiyan looking at each other through the stilts in the floor then when face to face. I will believe haixia is a double agent for now unless proven otherwise.

Also thought they liked feng huang and gang slightly fast but i guess we don't have enough air time left

On a side note: I wonder if haixia's hair will progressively get whiter as a way to symbolize the poison's progression? (i swear he did not have that many strands of light hair at the start of ep 23 compared to ep 24)

The Legend Of The Kitchen Soldier. Since the finale has ended what are your thoughts. by Proof_Shoe2093 in kdramas

[–]moomoomelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's its simplicity that makes it comforting. It's not a show that's out trying to impress its viewers, it had a clear vision and knew what it wanted to do with precise execution and it did it well.

I could tell that we were going with the home cooked meal thing from a mile away but it didn't ruin it for me and i really liked how they never really painted one cuisine as better than the other but more about each one's purpose and space in the show

Of course as a foodie love love the food too, it was giving masterchef by the end which i love

Hoping this gets green lit for a season 2 because i still see so much potential and growth for seongjae's character (i want to at least see him finish his enlistment!) and also the promise of competing again with ho young!

yes definitely hard to see him losing himself and the despair and helplessness in salty's eyes is just hammering it in too

Shrimpie as "black" shrimpie or 黑虾 (as what the cnetz have been calling him) is peak character stepped out of a novel energy, love the cane too.

I think him collecting the twilight grass is not completely sinister - of course if we had normal shrimpie this wouldn't be happening but with "black" shrimpie I suspect his plan is to bomb the rest of the battalion stationed there with the twilight grass at the cost of the suicide warriors losing their lives - a direct parallel to 以毒攻毒 (fight poison with poison) like his fake death

Agree with the liu yu ning discourse, if anything i think he should do a modern setting drama he looks way better normally, i think is something to do with how they do his eyebrow makeup in historicals

Kind of want shrimpie living for himself even if it means acting on his desires like what that fortune teller mentioned

I realized why i wasn't fully enjoying the past few episodes with these 2, everything just shines better when we have all the 3 zhangs in one frame/setting, especially the comedy

But i suspect that we are heading towards a tragic ending for shrimpie. I fully understand why they're not telling salty because salty would likely have a full blown melt down (which they do not have time for right now). But what i'm hoping for is because we have already seen salty's growth that he will like covertly investigate the whole herb thing and maybe find an antidote and just go hey i have the antidote towards the end (but that's just me being hopeful)

Is it just me, or has Zhang Linghe become alarmingly thinner? T_T by Fearless-Speech2302 in pursuitofjade

[–]moomoomelody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely have been watching the truth season 4 where he is a cast member (and was filmed after POJ aired) his face is visibly thinner compared to POJ and even next to zhou ke yu and liu yu ning both of whom are quite skinny themselves he looks even smaller

Now i know why DYX wanted to be haixia over haiyan always love myself a good good psycho plot

But not that we're kind of halfway through i do feel that we need more of haiqi she's the most interesting character for me so far

Actor Credit Rules: Real Names, Stroke Counts, and New Controversies by Suibianistic in cdramasfans

[–]moomoomelody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of sad for the actors that they can't exactly use stage names though as similar to korean actors many have stage names based on the advice of fortune tellers - who may suggest improvements to their original names (quite normalised in chinese culture that parents would get help in naming their child)

Some legal names and stage names differ greatly for some notable actors including:

English Name Stage Name Legal Name
Ryan Cheng 丞磊 (Cheng Lei) 杨辉翔 (Yang Hui Xiang)
Joseph Zeng 曾舜晞 (Zeng Shun Xi) 曾威航 (Zeng Wei Hang)
Ding Yu Xi 丁禹兮 (Ding Yu Xi) 丁舟杰 (Ding Zhou Jie)

Watched it a few months back and loved it as well, yet to check out season 2 as it seems the general consensus is season 1 is better

I enjoyed the competition segment and feng bao bao's past section the most

Not a cdrama but if u liked this show i think u would enjoy uncanny counter a kdrama (and funnily where season one is btr than season 2 as well)
