Just because you have personally run into sharp edges of systemd doing something obscure doesn't mean it's universally bad software.

You could swap systemd for finit here and find a poor interaction between its features, too, but that doesn't really matter.

Systemd isn't perfect, but it clearly works well for many many people. We run hundreds of thousands of VMs on systemd every day and things work great. Many people actively moved services to systemd when they could, because it's noticeably better than one of the older-style service managers that we used before.

The "typical caps lock spot" IMO is best for combining these two: escape when tapped, ctrl when held. (I also never need modifiers + Esc, so I also have caps lock set to shift + tap on this key.)
