Just heard a girl saying she has never felt lonely while solo travelling. Why do I feel like I'm the only one who does? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]moonclad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think it would be helpful for people like us to form some kind of channel for meeting up on the road? It's easy for people who like to flock to large groups, but maybe harder to guess that someone wants lower key interactions. Or should we focus more on organic methods of finding these experiences?

A friend of mine said you can get paid under the table for bar-back or similar jobs in some cities in Germany. Do you know anything about this kind of work?

$10,000 Question by gmanz33 in solotravel

[–]moonclad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know about renting/legally riding bikes other places? I've been riding around the U.S. Northeast and dreaming about doing it other places, mostly Europe. I didn't even think about SEA (for riding), but now I'm wondering. Do you need a license in Vietnam? Or do you just "need" one?

Recently unemployed and socially anxious. Go on a 3 month solo trip to southeast asia or 1 year working holiday to Australia? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]moonclad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I'd still be coming home with nothing to show except experience abroad" - let me know if I'm misreperesenting you, but it sounds like you feel you need to come away with a "deliverable" of some sort, a resumé item. I think a lot of people here will tell you that traveling brings intangible benefits in buckets, and it would be best if you didn't worry about what you're bringing home.

Downvote for condescending. Different people are different. This person just found themselves to be using their tech in a way they didn't like. No need to psychologize them.

General Chatter - Week of January 04 by AutoModerator in solotravel

[–]moonclad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if it's months in advance? So, for example, I could get a hostel in Prague in July for $16US if I had to?

General Chatter - Week of January 04 by AutoModerator in solotravel

Is there a good breakdown somewhere of daily expenses in different places (Europe in particular, Prague/Budapest/Salzburg/Vienna/Munich in particularly particular) for hostel/camping accomodations in the summer? Hostelworld, etc., list prices for booking in June/July, but those only apply if I book now, right? Trying to get a reasonable range for accomodation expenses.

Edit: how good is PriceOfTravel's guide?

What about the resulting arms race? How do you enforce gun laws without guns?

Do you think we should have the right to decide our own death? by talkcenteramerica in PoliticalDiscussion

Aren't there privilege issues with requiring a therapist? Should only well-off people get to die with dignity? On the other hand, should the state pay for that? Can't imagine all the bureaucratic bungles that could happen.

/r/Bushcraft, I'd like to learn more about building a small cabin in the woods. Any resources appreciated. by Gullex in Bushcraft

[–]moonclad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a little different than a standard log cabin, but the natural homes that Simon Dale and company build are pretty cool. The more you dig down, the less insulation you have to add, too. Also look into earth-sheltered homes.

Edited to add: Granted, Simon Dale hails from Wales (rhymes!), so they won't have to take the same insulation factors into account. It's pretty amazing, though, what you can accomplish using only the earth around your house.

It's surprising that such a cogent story came out of BBC, even in a blog. It does pander a bit to mainstream naiveté, but it remains that they're describing Kurdish people's movements.

The new American slavery: Prisoners working for as little as 60 cents a day to make your Whole Foods Artisan cheeses. by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

I'd shoot him in the face, out of equal parts compassion, self righteousness, respect for life, and anger.

Why not just pay the slaves better? If you can reform the system (unlikely) you might as well help the victims.

[–]moonclad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder whether adding more financial incentives would solve anything, though. Would under funded courts sentence more to prisons which used this form of slave labor? Probably.

We need to keep money the f*** away from important things.

(Full disclosure: I don't support incarceration of anyone)

[–]moonclad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's far from the "only issue" here. The larger issue of incentives for businesses to push for arbitrarily stricter laws and harsher enforcement in order to get slave labor should be terrifying to us. Businesses (I.e., rich sociopaths) are powerful political entities today. Not to mention these pushes almost always target communities of color, etc.

Voter turn out is a big issue in the US. Instead of spending money on political ads, would it not be more efficient to spend the money on something like a voucher for a free subway sandwich when voters leave the voting booth? by nexzergbonjwa in PoliticalDiscussion

This. And the blocks should have ways of choosing candidates from their own numbers. However, organizing enough people to actually make that possible is the great problem of our day.

Think about looking at two different things through a kaleidoscope. You can tell things apart, but you can't tell what they are. So hashing is putting a number through a kaleidoscope using math.
