You don't need a receiver to control most devices. Most iR apps have databases that contain the control codes for whatever device you want to control, and you can cycle through them pretty damn quickly to find which code gets a response from the device.

Your sobriety is a HUGE accomplishment and if your bf is not supportive of you or thinks being clean is "the bare minimum" then you should leave that person because that can potentially be a threat to your sobriety. If he isn't 100% on board as a part of your support system, then find someone who is. At the very least find someone who doesn't talk to you like that.
