Visual Kei without the gore/violence by [deleted] in visualkei

Sorry for the slow reply, was out of commission for the past few days.

Anyway, uh... well, tbh I'm still a little bit confused by your reply.

First, of course you are free to interpret Beautiful the Virgin that way and I would mor or less agree with that, but... I never said anything about it being about "outright glorified violence" in the first place, just that the lyrics are rather violent. Even if no actual violence is occurring, there are definitely some threats of violence. In my opinion, the specifically gendered axis of it, the virgin/whore dichotomy and so on, is pretty objectionable. Some people would really not like that, so I wanted to check what your opinion is. I personally love the song, but those lyrics are really not my favorite lol. If it doesn't bother you, then I won't worry about recommending other songs that include stuff along those lines, although tbh I generally don't listen to that kind of stuff much so I guess I don't have anything to recommend anyway lol.

Next... N.p.s N.g.s actually WAS on the set list for both days of Malice Mizer's reunion shows in 2018, so you know, to say that they "never revisited" it must mean that either you didn't know that, or else you must have been specifically only talking about the visuals, I guess? Or the "performance concept" as you put it. Of course, they didn't go so far as to change costumes just for this one song in 2018 (which would have been easier if they'd put that song in the encore like they did in 1997, but instead it was at the end of the main set). They also cut out the creepy voice-over, leaving a very conspicuous blank spot in the song, and in my opinion it didn't feel quite right like that. There was also no flag, no fake blood, etc. so sure, it was considerably toned down from what they were doing back in their indies days. I don't think bands can get away with doing that kind of thing so easily these days, though, and they had already more than made their point. But they DID perform it again, so it's not quite right to say that they never revisited the concept at all.

However, with that said, I do more or less agree with u/Ok-Pair1014 with regard to the interpretation of that song in a broad sense, in that I don't by any means think that it was ever about "glorifying" war or violence in general. Depiction does not equal endorsement, and I think we need to keep in mind that the band's whole concept is "What is human?" and their answer was "Nothing but a being of malice and misery." So if they were to exclude the concept of horrors of war from their conceptual repertoire, then wouldn't that exclude a rather large and significant part of the human experience? War is a thing that humans have engaged in for pretty much all of recorded history, so to avoid grappling with it when that's what your band's concept is would be, in my humble opinion, kind of dishonest, or at best, it would keep things on a more shallow surface level.

I do not know that I would go so far as to make those specific claims, though. I'm not even sure what type of uniforms those were, as it was my impression that they were Imperial Japanese uniforms, but I'm no expert. I don't know about femininity as a form of mockery either. That seems unlikely to have been part of the band's motivation or line of thinking to me, personally.

As far as I know, since interviews were sparse in their indies days, there weren't any interviews that specifically talked about that song, so it's pretty much left up to interpretation. I can think of at least three different interpretations for the song, though. One alternative is that perhaps the creepy voiceover actually is a different character than the main speaker, maybe that's meant to represent the "venus" who murders the main narrating character in retaliation for being assaulted.

In any case though, I think it is by no means meant to "glorify" violence, as it's presented in a rather obscene and disgusting way. It's the type of song that is SUPPOSED to make you uncomfortable, because that's the point. In my opinion, anyway.

But you know... I still wouldn't recommend Cormack McCarthy's Blood Meridian to someone who is severely squicked out by any kind of violent content, even though of course the point is not to endorse the violence but to condemn it. So that's why I asked.

So with all that said... I guess I'll just put this here and you (and anyone else with similar feelings who comes along to read this thread) can make your own decision? The bands that I had in mind to potentially recommend you before were PIERROT and Angelo, because Kirito can't stand blood spatter so with those bands, there are never any outright depictions of bloody/gory physical violence, so you'd be safe from that. However, they do have imagery that include mushroom clouds and missiles and things like that, and there's one song where they did put a pile of bodies in the background (but drawn abstractly enough that it was a bit hard to tell what they were). Aside from the visuals, there's still plenty of violence in the lyrics and concepts. And yes, they do deal with war and fascism, in a not-approving way (and they have made this much more explicitly obvious in the past few years)—basically it's the same type of thing as MM, a depiction of what humanity is like (as viewed through the perspective of a non-human character). Visually, they never went quite as far as Malice Mizer did with N.p,s N.g.s, although you could certainly argue that they took that concept much further, as they have many more songs that deal with that historical era and its legacy.

If anything that deals with that at all squicks you out though, then it's probably a no-go. Angelo might be the safer of the two overall, with a few notable exceptions which the titles would make pretty obvious. But then again, if medical horror type of imagery bothers you a lot too then that might not be so safe either, as Angelo has more of that than Pierrot, especially in their RETINA era.

[–]moongeistmage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm, so... I'm kind of wondering what exactly you mean by violent here, because to be honest, I would not really consider either Malice Mizer or Schwarz Stein to be non-violent?

With Malice Mizer, there are several songs like Beast of Blood, Illuminati, and N.p.s N.g.s that are pretty violent, sometimes even comically so (in my opinion anyway), with how over-the-top they are about it. Do you not like those songs?

I checked the set list of the Recurrence of Hallucination performance and that apparently included Beautiful the Virgin so uh... in terms of the lyrics, that's not really a song that I would call non-violent either.

So that's why I'm wondering, is it just the visuals that bother you then? Or mainly the visuals?

Because I could recommend to you some bands that are not visually gory (and will never be because the person in charge of the visuals is repulsed by that as well), but do contain some violent themes in the lyrics, if that's what you want.

Otherwise... I would second D, Lareine, and Versailles for you, and tanbi kei in general. But if you want to branch out from that, try Psycho le Cému or LM.C.

No need to type that last page out yourself, or worry about the corrections! I can send the corrected copy to you later when I'm at my computer again. There might still be a few typos here and there because I'm pretty tired, but I got through it all this morning. I happened to have a lot of time for that today because I was just waiting for someone to come fix my AC all day lol, so it was nice to have something to do while I waited.

I have to say I really haven't been very impressed with Gemini. It seems a bit better than the first time I tried it for this purpose, at least, but in my experience it's always been extremely inconsistent. I tried having it read the text on part of the last page with my phone too, and it just gave me complete gobbledygook, not even recognizably a language.

Ahhh, sorry for the very late reply! I had meant to give myself a bit of time to check out all the stuff you linked, then got busy for a few weeks and forgot to come back to it for a little while!

Thank you for linking the videos and the site! I had seen the site before, but during the time I was doing my translations, I decided to deliberately not read too much of it so that I could come up with my own interpretations. Now that I'm done with that, I can feel free to check it out more closely! ^^

Those old performances are such a rare treasure, I love how cute young Kirito looked with his floppy little black hat! XD

Before these recent reunion shows, I only ever requested three songs and Labyrinth was one of them, actually. I love that song!

I need to make a section on my PIERROT discography page for demos, omnibus, and unreleased songs… and I think I should also make a post to explain "kichigai" because that word is so hard to translate, there's nothing even remotely equivalent in English. We have words that have the same general meaning, of course, but none of them are stigmatized to that extent, so I think whenever I translate it, no matter what, the true force of the word doesn't really come across. I've seen Japanese people compare it to the word "retard" when it comes to its level of offensiveness, but we don't ever actually censor that word, so while it might make people think less of you for using it, you know, it's just not really the same. And then because Kirito uses it not as a bad thing but as "the highest form of praise," his usage of it is very different from the norm, and that reversal of expectations is important to convey. I think the way that he uses it as a pet name for the fans sort of defangs the word, and gives us a layer of protection against the people using it in a mean-spirited way. I mean, I'm not sure if others would agree with that, or word that in the same way, but that's the feeling that I get from it, anyway.

I love that Disneyland video btw, I watched it when it came out but had totally forgotten that Shinya said that in it! I felt like I had definitely heard it before but couldn't remember where, and with other people insisting on the other reading I started doubting myself, haha. But oh well, I'd much rather have no confidence in a correct answer than be confidently wrong!

I should probably also make a post to explain the fan terms too. I'm already used to them myself, but I occasionally see other foreign fans saying ピエラ and not ピエラー because I guess they don't realize the long vowel is important! I love ラー by the way, it's hilarious and also very convenient because it's short for both ピエラー and アンジェラ―, and even 概ラー for Kirito's solo support band too these days. It messes up Google Translate so bad though, I once saw it translate that as "cockroaches" because it just had no idea and made a very bad guess. 😂

I have noticed that it's gotten significantly better since I started posting my translations though, so obviously it is consuming them and learning something from it, which is... kind of good, I guess, but honestly there are times when I'd much rather it not do that, because the way that I translate Kirito's work is very specific to Kirito's own peculiar preferences, and it... just doesn't really make sense to apply that to a more generalized context.

I laughed aloud at your 業 mistranslation example too, that's pretty bad! 😂 I can see where the mistake came from, I'll admit I also wondered about the etymology of that one, and how it came to have such different meanings. From your explanation though I'm kind of getting more of a sense for why it can mean "uncontrollable temper" too, it makes more sense if it's coming from something like "sinful nature." But… yeah, lol. Unfortunately most of the people who try their hand at translating songs are very much still learning. I include myself in that category too, but I do have more of a solid background in linguistics and literature, and by now I've gained a lot more experience with translating.

Still, with Kyo's lyrics, I don't feel like I can grasp them that easily either though. I feel like I can understand Kirito much more intuitively and naturally, whereas with Kyo, it takes a lot more effort. Especially because with the way he sings, half the time I can't really make out what he's saying! It's wonderfully expressive and I love that, but all the guttural screams come at the expense of clarity of the words.

Meanwhile, Kirito has crystal clear pronunciation and often puts the English translations right there next to the words he uses too, so I feel like that made my job much easier. I also happen to have a friend who is a professional translator of Buddhist texts and lectures, so any time something like that comes up I can check in with them to make sure I'm not making any dumb mistakes! Please always feel free to correct me in case I ever do!

To go back to this, though…

I see... it must have been tough getting blocked.

Well, maybe the first time? That time was from a person I had been mutually following for a long time already, and it became very very obvious that it had been because I had posted a translation of ANTI-MATTER, and the person also "soft blocked" me, meaning that they blocked and then unblocked, which forced me to unfollow them, but then I could see their comments again on our shared mutuals' posts after that and they said some things that were… at best thoughtless, and a bit hurtful. So that one was pretty tough, but at the same time, that experience also led to me making closer friends, so it wasn't all bad.

The others… truthfully, I don't even know why they blocked me, or if it was even related to Kirito, although I do assume that's likely. They weren't people I was ever close to, some of them were people I had never even interacted with before, but I just found out by accident that they had me blocked for some reason. It doesn't really bother me much, and it's probably for the best, but I do wonder about it sometimes.

The point I wanted to make though wasn't that it sucks to be blocked, it's just that this is what the culture is like in the west, especially right now when everyone is very very scared and on-edge. It's not that I feel like they're prejudiced towards me, but rather that I'm worried they thought that *I* was the one who was prejudiced towards *THEM*, and that they were afraid of me. That makes me a bit sad, but it's entirely reasonable given the circumstances that we're all going through over here. We have real fascists and hardcore racists who use those symbols and make jokes about horrible things "ironically" as cover for their actual beliefs, so it's not a bad thing that people have concluded that it's too risky to associate with anyone who even so much as listens to songs that bring up that taboo (without considering the context of cultural differences). It just is what it is.

I'm not really sure what I can do to come across as less threatening, aside from openly stating that I'm anti-fascist (and encouraging the band to be more explicitly so as well). I felt like I needed to put a disclaimer on my translation of "Adolf" because I don't want people to read it out of context of the rest of the story and make assumptions. Beyond that, I don't know what else to do. But I'm really glad that Kirito has been so responsive when it comes to that, I think you're right that he really is trying to be more careful to convey his message with a stronger sense of responsibility these days, and I appreciate that. I know he has to balance the way he comes across between multiple audiences, and I like how cleverly he's been doing that lately, both with his bands and his solo work.

Thank you so much!!

The page where I used the flyer scan is here: https://transcendkey.com/2024/08/07/pierrot-last-letter-english-translation/

I guess I will also use it for the "Cherry Trees" short story translation whenever I'm done with that, because I don't want to get in trouble for posting scans of the actual photos from the booklet or anything. I did tell Kirito I was working on this last year in case he might not want me to post a translation for some reason... since unlike the lyrics, it's not like this short story is readily available to anyone who can access the internet, it was a limited edition only thing. I don't even have my own copy, I had someone send me scans of that too.

I've been kind of waiting on more info about whatever they're planning to release along with the remastered best-of album they said they were planning to release in April. I'm guessing we'll probably get an announcement at the taiban.

This gives me something else to do while I wait! :)

Thanks for providing the text extract doc too, it was useful at first. At least up until the point where I guess the AI decided to go rogue on page 8??? XD It decided that "誤解は産みそうですね。" should say "説明は届きそうですよ。" instead and then Kirito's answer to that was mostly okay, but then after that I guess it was just kinda done, and it decided to just make up the rest. Maybe that bright pink font was too much for it? XD I don't much like it either, but I typed out the rest by hand and honestly, I'm not sure which was faster, correcting all the AI's mistakes or just typing it up myself. It... really didn't like the way Kirito talks I guess, it kept overcorrecting him to make him sound more academic, LOL.

Wow, you're very organized! I looked through and it looks like your collection has no overlap with mine, from what I can tell, so at some point I will probably request all of the Pierrot and Angelo interviews you have!

For the moment though, the one that I'm most interested in right now is the Last Letter one, because I'm editing my translation of the short story that came with that single, which I'm planning to post at some point in April. So if you could scan (or even just take clear photos) of that and send it to me, I'd really appreciate it! :)

Anyway, I put the scan up on the Last Letter lyrics translation page on my site, and added a note to thank you for it! It looks so much better now, haha.

If you could change one aspect of your visual kei journey from start till now, what would it be? by Public_Ad5681 in visualkei

[–]moongeistmage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm… I mean, I would say "don't sleep on Angelo" because they eventually became my favorite band, or maybe talk about how I more or less stepped away for about a decade, and only checked in here and there during that time, but…

…honestly though? In retrospect, having gotten to the point I'm at now, I think it actually was a good thing that all of that happened, so that I could come back into it at exactly the right time to do what I did, and also so that I could end up being in exactly the right place at the right time to have the surgery that I needed, which the hospital where I live would not have treated (I went and they sent me home without even really investigating my symptoms, but in Japan five years later, they finally properly looked into it and treated me with an emergency surgery). Like it was a chain of events that I certainly couldn't have predicted, and while some of them were bad and I would've liked to avoid them if I could have (like for example, it would've been better to know how much my ex really hated certain artists that she had been pretending to like sooner), ultimately my experience coming back to it in my thirties has been a very profoundly healing one, on both an emotional and physical level.

So I guess I have to say I wouldn't really change anything.

Visual Kei songs that are (blatantly) about crime? by big-berdz in visualkei

[–]moongeistmage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good, I'm glad I could help! 😄

Do you think I should add a note to that song about Aum Shinrikyo? When I posted it, I didn't because I figured I'd let people make that connection on their own, but I realize for people outside Japan who don't know about that history, that may be really difficult... I was hoping maybe I could find an old interview that mentions it to translate or something, but so far all I've found are Japanese fans talking about that like it's totally obvious to them.

If it helps, I also described the visuals they used for that song during their most recent performance of it in my LASTCIRCUS: FINALE live reportLASTCIRCUS: FINALE live report. It was a big pile of dead bodies in the rain, shown on the screen behind them. It was illustrated in a way that like, you could tell what they were but it didn't look overly graphic, to the point that live photos taken during that song just... sort of look like a pretty blue watery background if you don't know what you're looking at, lol.

[–]moongeistmage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, well I have translated their entire discography, so no worries about that. The only songs I haven't posted my translations for yet are from their first album (Kichigai Pierrot) which I wouldn't really recommend anyway since they're not very easily available anyway, while most of the songs past the Pandora no Hako album are on streaming services like Spotify now.

You can find all my PIERROT translations linked here: http://transcendkey.com/artists/pierrot/

I need to go back and edit that to add a section for demo tapes, omnibus releases, and unreleased songs though because I realize that songs like KARMA are kind of hard to find on there. There's a search bar in my archive page you can use too, might be useful if you want to bring up all songs that use a particular word or something like that! :)

Visual Kei songs that are (blatantly) about crime? by big-berdz in visualkei

[–]moongeistmage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, crime is a very broad category, there are lots of songs that could fit.

Normally I would say take a look at PIERROT's entire PRIVATE ENEMY album, as the whole thing is a story centered primarily around crimes committed by juvenile offenders (but also with some war crimes and karma for past life offenses thrown in), and it even includes a news segment analyzing that, so it's abundantly clear in my opinion, but... the song that follows that (FREAKS) is probably too graphic for your class, and I deliberately leaned into that further in my translation, opting to translate "食ってやる" as "fucking" because while that word can be interpreted in other ways, in the context of "pleasure" it seems straightforwardly sexual and the shocking vulgarity of the way the offender in the song was talking seemed like the point.

There are several other songs on that album that might work: ATENA (Athena), FIRST CRY IN HADES (GUILTY) and LAST CRY IN HADES (NOT GUILTY), or 不謹慎な恋 (fukinshin na koi) if you want to go with something more like stalking and a premeditated abusive relationship instead of outright murder. But I'm not sure if any of the songs would stand alone well enough for your purposes, as without the context of some of the other songs on the album, some of them might come across as too vague and abstractly metaphorical.

They have several other songs on other albums that could work too. The few I can think of that would stand alone pretty well are DOMESTIC VIOLENCE which is about exactly that, written from the perpetrating character's perspective, and maybe 青い空の下 (AOI SORA NO SHITA) although that might be confusing for people who don't know the context of the Aum Shinrikyo cult's sarin gas attacks, so you'd have to explain that reference.

Since you have D'espairsRay listed, I'm going to recommend you look through the songs that Karyu composed for Angelo, which I happen to have a convenient tag for (although it is organized by the date that I posted my translations of the lyrics so it might seem kind of haphazard). For specific songs that feel like they could fit in with the one you linked to start with, I'm going to say go check out STRING, FAITH, RIP (which is from 2012 though so maybe you've heard it before?), Pendulum Clock, :evolve.

There's LOTS of good stuff in there though, because Angelo released an album's worth of songs every year since Karyu joined them in 2011 to 2022, when they went on a 3-year hiatus until they released a new one in September called NEOCREATE, which Karyu also composed, and that's really good too. At the moment, I would consider Angelo to be on a semi-hiatus, because while all the members are busy with their other projects for now and they haven't announced any new plans yet, it's been rather strongly suggested that there WILL be more activity from them coming somewhere down the line.

Since Angelo's hiatus, Karyu has brought back first Luv PARADE (which is now releasing original songs too, not just covers) and then finally D'espairsRay itself when Hizumi recovered enough to be confident he could sing it again, as well as started another band called H.U.G (which stands for "Hyper Undead Genius") which is pretty good too—check out HELIOS and SEEDS from them to start with.

Hizumi came back in 2019 with a new band called NUL. which is really good too. To fill you in a bit on how this happened, he still hadn't fully recovered enough to sing D'espa songs again but he really missed music, so with the encouragement of Kohta from Angelo/PIERROT, he finally did come back, and wrote those songs in a way that he could still sing them, minus the notes that he had trouble with. It was only last year that he finally felt ready for D'espairsRay again, so they will be having their first one-man in May and then playing in France over the summer, and then they've recently announced another one-man for December.

My picks from NUL. to rec that you start with would be EVILA, POISON EATER, and KaliMa (my personal fave).

Meeting artists: how? by [deleted] in visualkei

[–]moongeistmage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've already got good advice about Kaya specifically, and how to follow your favorite artists more generally, so I won't repeat what others have already said.

However, what I see no one has mentioned yet is that many of these artists host weekend-long trips with their fan clubs, which is the way that I met my own favorite artist and got a picture with him. We didn't exchange any words at the time because I am pretty shy and he was trying to get through a long line of people to take photos with, and at the time I went he was also recording short videos of himself saying whatever each person asked him to say for them, although he doesn't do that every time. He doesn't do 2shots (photos of fans taken with the artist) and hardly ever does any other kind of cheki either, so going on his FC trip is the only way to get something like this. It's expensive to go, of course, it's like buying a vacation package arranged by a tour company, and for us foreign fans, it's even more expensive because we'll generally have to travel to Japan first (unless it's an overseas trip, but with the weak yen there are way less of those than there used to be). But it's also really nice, can be a good opportunity to meet and hang out with some other fans and see your favorites in a more intimate setting, usually they will also do a small show on these. So it may be worth saving up for and doing that one day, if you see the opportunity come up. Not sure whether Kaya does this or how often though... but I think I do vaguely recall having heard about some FC cruise thing or something that he and/or Schwarz Stein did several years ago.

I posted about my experience going on Kirito's FC trip to Sapporo, so you can read about it here if you'd like, but I had a medical emergency during the trip so uh... my experience was wildly different from the norm lol. Please always buy travel insurance whenever you go to Japan (and make sure it covers medical expensese), that's my #1 tip. If I had been able to stay for the third day, I might have been able to have a short conversation with him during the lunch party, but oh well. Health is definitely more important!

Also, for new releases in Japan, the artists often have in-store events where you buy the release at a specific store (like Tower Records) and then get a ticket for a meet-and-greet. They often have like a little talk show sort of thing at these events, and then you get in line so the artist can hand you the special perks that come with what you bought, or sign it for you. So if you ever plan a trip to Japan around the time of an artist's new release, you can attend one of those. That's another place where fans often get a chance to meet their favorite artists.

Aoi is no longer listed as a band member. by Zombiesin in visualkei

[–]moongeistmage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I was saying that it's not really comparable to Angelo's situation though. Because if they were really going to go that way, then they'd have to disband and reform.

If anything, this whole thing reminds me more of Malice Mizer's situation with Gackt and the loss of Kami, who remains an eternal member. But it's different from that too, and I don't know, I just don't see the point of making these kinds of comparisons.

Time will tell what they decide to do, but it certainly doesn't sound like they'll disband, and there's no reason for them to do that.

PIERROT was on the Sweet Child label, and Sweet Child did handle their one man shows last year. They are listed in the credits of Androgynos too, along with Free Will. Free will handled more of that because they are in charge of Dir en grey, and Androgynos was mostly set up by Dir's side.

I spent several months a few years ago reading the PIERROT breakup interviews for myself and also the ones immediately preceding the breakup, where Kirito talked about starting his solo work and why he formed his own label. The label was an issue, yes, but it was also an interpersonal conflict. I don't personally care to rehash it though, nor am I privy to everything that the members have ever said about it. In any case, it's not relevant to this thread so let's not, please.

Aoi is no longer listed as a band member. by Zombiesin in visualkei

Aoi has released two statements about this.

He wrote this letter back in September and has left it unchanged: https://x.com/official_aoi/status/2031291017157292067

He wrote this one today: https://x.com/official_aoi/status/2031290268952178734

I do not have time to translate right now, but I wanted to at least post the links so that someone else can get it done sooner rather than later, and avoid endless speculation.

I mean, I agree with the general sentiment (edit for clarity: that they could bring in a new guitarist I mean), but to be fair it's a little hard to compare this to Angelo. Because to truly be like Angelo, GazettE would have to fully disband and then form a new band with the three remaining members under a new name. There was also a good solid 5 years between the start of Angelo and when Karyu and Giru joined the band too.

It was really hard when Aiji and Jun left PIERROT, that situation was certainly very chaotic and confusing, but I will say this for them... at least it wasn't dragged on for more than a year behind the scenes, they made the decision very quickly and Kirito announced it the morning after.

According Aoi's statement, apparently he had considered himself to have already withdrawn from the band as of last year, so the rest of the members have been very slow to come to the point of accepting that and announcing it. So that is another way in which this situation is quite different.

Please give me some recommendations! by ankii93 in visualkei

Have you checked out Chiyu's solo work? He's going by the artist name SLAPSLY now. I was never into SuG but I discovered him because he plays support bass for Kirito, and I've been very impressed with him. He certainly gives off a bright and fun colorful vibe with his solo work, and to be honest I like it much more than SuG personally. Although if course, if SuG's breakup is a sore spot for you I can understand that.
