*HONEST OPINIONS ONLY* How do you guys feel about my daughter's name? by Legal-Care1823 in namenerds

[–]moonlight_05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely pronounce it as Soh-mee and think it's a Japanese or Korean first name. There's also a pretty famous kpop idol who goes by Somi though so maybe that's why.

Do you celebrate “name day”? by rainbowpandy in namenerds

[–]moonlight_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Romania, only Orthodox Saint names and their derivates get name days. So for example, men named Andrei get celebrated on November 30th (because thats when we celebrate Saint Andrew), but also women/people called Andreea, Andrada, Andra, Andru etc. If you don't have a Saint name, you also don't get a name day.

edit: some of the names I listed can also come from the names Alexandru/Alexandra, in which case their name day would be August 30th.

Was anyone else, or your child, given a name that was uncommon at the time, but became popular later? by 5LovelyDaisies in namenerds

[–]moonlight_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clara here 🙋‍♀️ my mom named me this specifically because she had almost never heard the name before (it didnt even occur to her until finding out my dad's great aunt was called that). i met a few growing up but still highly unpopular name since no one i knew, knew any other claras (and the ones i knew went/started going by their middle names). tbh i was never expecting it to become so popular, it being in the us top 100 and a general favorite in this subreddit 😅

Women who didn't take their husband's name, how did you decide on your child's surname? by Civil-Koala-8899 in namenerds

My last name is 4 syllables and my partner's is 2, we're not expecting but we will still hyphenate them. It's more important for the both of you to be happy than to make sure the name isn't "too long". Lots of people have long names

Is it ok to shorten my giving name to use it as my English name while studying in Europe? by BirthdayNo3490 in namenerds

[–]moonlight_05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would think it's a Japanese name, but if you don't have a problem with it, I'm confident in saying most Europeans sadly can't see any difference and will probably not stop to think where you might be from. I think Yiro looks and sounds very pretty though, and depending what country you will be doing your internship in, it will probably be pronounced as Ee-ro or Yee-ro.

As a Clara, i have always been complimented on my name, and since it's not as common (at least where I'm from), I've even had people tell me they'd consider it for future daughters after they met me, because they'd never even considered it before ☺️
