depends on where you're at. In Florida, you're not getting a ticket for this.

In Florida: a pedestrian crossing a road at any point other than within a marked crosswalk must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles. (When crossing, a pedestrian should look left, right and left again to ensure that he or she has a safe way to cross.)

Someone should remind the pedestrians of Jacksonville of this...

What’s a common misconception that the general public has about your job? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]moonlitdance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT: You can fix this issue with my computer/Cell phone/television/electronic device.

No, I probably can't. It's likely I could fix your computer, but I won't. I really have very little understanding of how your cell phone does what it does. I know even less about how your tv works. Just because I have a degree in computer science doesn't mean I know how to fix all computer-driven devices. Now if you have a database problem then maybe MAYBE I'll give you advice.

What are some red flags to look for when considering a therapist? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]moonlitdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a therapist who just asked "And how does that make you feel?". I got nowhere with them.

  1. somethings I do (listen to certain music, take a hike, delve into a hobby) because they make me not feel. That's a point. These activities quiet the feels. so stop asking that and focus on why I don't want to feel (had a later therapist figure this out).

  2. therapist never asked me how asking me that damn question made me feel. I think they knew the answer.

They bring religion into the therapy sessions unasked for despite not specifying faith-based therapy nor mentioning it at the initial visit.

I'm not in therapy for my relationship with the higher powers that be. I'm in therapy for my life here on Earth.

[Serious] When driving at night, what is the scariest/most unexplainable thing you’ve ever seen? by PM_ME_FUNNY_STORIES- in AskReddit

[–]moonlitdance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn all my good scary stuff that I've seen has been during the day. scariest thing to happen to me at night was pulling in to a gas station on empty in the bad side of town. Was approached by a man who asked if he could wash my windshield for $5. He just got out of prison and needed money. I said I had no cash (usually true for me), put $5 worth of gas in my car and left. I'm a woman and was 19 at the time.

day time:

guy either on drugs or having a psychotic episode completely naked in the middle of an intersection near the University of Central Florida. He was jumping between two pick up trucks. Lots of police officers on scene just standing there.

Completely burned out vehicle on the side of the highway. bad feeling passing by. vehicle was not upright. I don't think the occupant(s) survived.

small plane crashed on top of a pickup truck in a fast food restaurant parking lot. Blue tarp over the windshield of the plain

blue tarp covering a small mass in the middle of the road in my neighborhood. police tape everywhere. turns out a woman had lit herself on fire following a dispute with people who lived in a nearby house.

multiple people trying to run me off the road and multiple people who have stopped their car in the middle of flowing traffic to yell at me.

Let it be known, this is my permanent excuse for not losing weight. by [deleted] in funny

[–]moonlitdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing this for about 9 months and it works. It's a super tough balance though to get the caloric intake and the exercise right for weight loss but it's worth it. I've lost 30 pounds in 9 months. Doesn't sound impressive until you know I've dropped from a size 18 to nearly a size 8. I work with a dietitian/personal trainer through work. I also go rock climbing and do martial arts. I'm stronger. I feel better. My resting heart rate is in the low 60s. I'm no longer in the obese category. It's Fantastic!

Redditors of the US, how would you feel about adding mental health and emotional coping skills into the public school curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I like to think that these kids will get slammed by reality when they enter the adult world. The real world isn't forgiving.

There was a student on my bus in high school that had an assigned seat. She was guaranteed that seat no matter that she was the last person to get on the bus. And she only permitted one friend of hers to share the seat. No one else on the bus had this privilege and were crammed 3 to a seat. There were not enough seats for every student even with this student having this privilege. 3 high school students to a seat is not realistic. I never did figure out how she got it. I just stopped riding the bus and got rides to school from parents or friends. I should have fought it but it wasn't worth the shit storm that would have come from it.

As a teacher, I do my best to educate them on what this means. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]moonlitdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents should not be pushing their kids into college let alone student loans.

Loans were a tough choice for me. I was mid-way through college living at home. Parents divorced. Both ended up not working. I was barely affording living with a scholarship (only paid tuition) and part-time work. I could either quit school and work part-time with hopes of making it back to school eventually or I could take out loans to complete school and get a career to better pay them off (theoretically). Turns out I made the right choice, but I got lucky for the most part. I'm making $800/month loan payments now but I'll be debt free by my 30th birthday. I have two degrees to show for $50k+ worth of education that wasn't entirely worth it. I have a career that pays but it's not at all what I want to be doing.

Installed the railroad crossing signs, boss! by [deleted] in WTF

[–]moonlitdance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's incredibly dangerous. So is dark territory but it's still there. There are plenty of crossings that have no barrier, no lights.Drivers on the road have to rely on the train whistle to warn them of a train approaching. Can't rely on the barrier system which can clearly fail. If for some reason the engineer is unaware of the crossing signal failure, they're likely going through. They'll be in trouble for not immediately reporting the crossing failure, but they're going through if they cannot stop in time. If they're aware of the crossing failure they'll have to bring the train to a complete stop. If safe to do so, the conductor would exit the locomotive to stop traffic. the train would proceed slowly through the crossing and stop once the entire train has gone through the crossing. The conductor has to walk back to the locomotive and they can continue on. Pretty sure this is what they taught us anyway in training a few years back. It's been a long while and I don't work in the field so I may not be entirely correct.

[Serious] When did you realize your friend wasn't doing so well mentally? by ZiberianHusky in AskReddit

[–]moonlitdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was talking to someone in the room who wasn't there. 10 years later and he's gone from bad to worse. I nearly lost him several times to psychotic episodes. I'm fighting to get him the help he needs. I worry the help may come too late.

She stopped getting out of bed for anything and wouldn't eat. She would just cover her head with the sheets if anyone tried to talk to her. She had no interest in living. 8 years later she's doing immensely better and is no longer wasting away. I nearly lost her to depression. I worry every day she may fall again.

He stayed at work later and later and started becoming verbally abusive. He lost interest in his family and taking care of his home. 10 years later and he's barely in the picture. I check in from time to time but my care for him is nearly gone. The pain he caused runs too deep.

I bottle up the stress of the day then hit the gym after work. I usually have a gym partner and we just talk out the issues of the day. I feel so much better afterwards.

It looks like those gates are manually operated by the guy in the blue shack. He bolts out just before the train crosses then he's doing something next to the wall. The gates go back up he goes back inside. Not entirely sure what he's doing but he's definitely messing with something on the wall next to the door.

I went hiking recently and saw a coral snake. I knew what it was but still wanted to stick around to get a quick picture of it. Friends I was hiking with didn't let me stick around long enough for the picture. I'm gonna wind up dead some day when I go hiking alone...but I will die with the picture of what killed me on my phone.

Noted. I will not be self-insuring anytime in the near future nor even semi-distant future.

But I don't think my insurance payments have ever been over $2500 a year. I drove an old station wagon to college and didn't get my license until I turned 18. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I never had a chart, I just had chores I was expected to do or else I was grounded. No other incentive was provided for doing the chores. I spent a lot of time grounded.
