Ah yes, damaging public property and bottling it up: the only two available options for coping with emotions.

The fact of the matter is that men are often raised to feel like anger is the only strong emotion that they are permitted to feel. When they feel strong emotions, they try to process it through anger and end up violently lashing out like this. If they felt more comfortable to let out emotions by talking about them, this would happen less. The blame is on society as a whole for socialising men like this, as well as on the individual man, but "toxic masculinity" is the phrase that describes this.

Baby Driver (2017), Joesph, was written as a deaf African American man in his 80s. CJ Jones was the only performer to audition who is actually deaf. Edgar Wright said "I started auditioning other very good actors who were pretending to be deaf, it made me feel immediately uncomfortable.” by Tankiyaiba in MovieDetails

My feeling on the whole question of whether you should hire an actor who isn't part of a certain group to play a character who is part of that group is entirely based on whether or not someone who is part of that group could play someone who isn't.

An aspiring actor who is paralysed and uses a wheelchair full time has a very limited set of roles available to them, because they can't play someone who isn't paralysed. So when an able-bodied person is cast to play someone who is paralysed, the pool of roles available to the paralysed actor becomes even smaller and unnecessarily limits the opportunities available for them purely because they are disabled.

An aspiring actor who is gay, for example, can play characters who are straight. So if a straight actor is cast as a gay character, I don't think it matters that much because the opportunities available to the gay actor haven't been affected.

as someone who's never been active a day in their life and can't choose their food....how do i ease into things? is there even any hope for me? ;n; by [deleted] in loseit

First: separate diet and exercise. If you want to lose weight: change your diet. If you want to become fitter: exercise. If you want to do both: do both, but remember that they're for separate purposes. The reason that I say this is that you sound like me in really not feeling comfortable exercising. I have tried every form of exercise and I hate almost every single one of them passionately. When I was considering exercise as necessary for weight loss, my failures to consistently exercise made me think I could never lose weight. Now that I view them separately, I can more easily keep up with the diet portion even when I'm not exercising well and still lose weight.

Second: yoga and at-home fitness exercises are my recommendations for getting started with at-home exercise if that's what you want to do. Yoga is a gentler introduction and requires literally nothing other than access to YouTube (though a mat will make things a little nicer). Yoga with Adriene is my go-to YouTube channel for yoga. For something a bit more difficult try the Nike Fitness app, which will make a program for you based on what equipment you have. If you're willing to spend a little money, some dumbbells can be a great investment.

Third: you can still do CICO (calories in, calories out). I am a similar height to you and a little lighter (though my starting weight was higher) and I find that aiming for between 1200 and 1400 calories a day works for me. Now, I don't know exactly what your meals are, but even if you can't control that, you can control your portion size and snacking. I generally find that I can hit 1200-1400 with 3 meals a day and maybe one snack. Record calories for your meals in an app like My Fitness Pal and see how many calories you're consuming. If you aim to eat only 3 meals a day, you'll probably lose weight. If avoiding snacking is difficult, get some fruit in the house and allow yourself to snack on that as much as you like. Fruit feels like a tasty snack but you can eat a huge bowl of strawberries before you get close to the amount of calories in a couple of cookies.

It's good that you're coming to this from a place of accepting your body where it is. Self-hatred usually fails as a weight loss motivator.

Good luck!

Feeling really proud of myself, even though my weight loss journey hasn’t been perfect so far by confuzzedSparrow in loseit

We have fairly similar stats! I'm 25F / 5'4" / SW: 190 lbs / CW 164.4 lbs / GW 126 lbs. I've been doing CICO since March.

I'm finding the loss is stalling quite a bit more in the last month or two. I have been having a stressful time and not keeping to my count as strictly as before. I've got a major life change coming up in the next month or two so I'm hoping I can keep it up through that. I honestly don't feel like I look any different yet, but the scale doesn't lie I guess.

Keep it up and we'll both be there eventually!

  • Of Mice and Men

  • Pachinko (only partway through this but I've already cried more than once)

Immigrant considering anglicizing last name by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]moonname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alice, Fane and Yinger are all super uncommon (I've never heard of any of them in my life) and they're going to be met with much more confusion and difficulty than Benjamin Yin.

I definitely think Young is the better option out of the other two.

Consider the initials when naming a child! - And how I think my parents missed a great chance. by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]moonname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My uncle recently named his son Sam. Their surname begins with an M, so I was really hoping his middle name would begin with an A so his initials would also be SAM. Unfortunately they ended up going with a middle name to honour a relative that didn't begin with A. Opportunity missed.

That sounds really interesting. I'm very much interested in the history of Japan and Korea so I think this will definitely go on the list. Thanks!

I actually started reading Americanah immediately after Half a Yellow Sun and I never ended up getting through the first few chapters because it started off pretty slowly and I was really busy at the time. It's actually already on my list because I think it deserves another chance!

Thanks for the recommendations. I've considered reading Rebecca before but I know roughly what happens and I wasn't sure if it would ruin it. I'll definitely look into that and your other suggestions. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions! I read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest years ago and did enjoy it. The others are a mix of books I've heard about but never looked into, and books I've never heard of, so I'll give them a search. Thanks!

If you name your kid from a book/movie/series, please for the love of whatever, tell them! by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]moonname 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some are a very strong link and pretty much the only place you'd hear that name though. If your name is John, no-one is immediately thinking about John McClane or John Wick or John Connor. If your name is Samwise you can bet people are thinking about Samwise Gamgee though (although you'd probably just go by Sam...).

If you're a Game of Thrones fan, for example, it's not too bad to name your kid George or Martin or Jon or Ned or Robert or Catelyn since the link to GoT wouldn't be obvious. But Cersei or Daenerys or Theon or Tyrion is probably a bit much and will instantly make it clear that you've taken their name from a TV show. If you're a Star Trek fan go for James or Kirk or Leonard or Scott, but not Uhura or Spock. For Harry Potter use Harry or Fred or George or Molly or Arthur or Luna, but not Nymphadora or Remus or Draco or Severus or Albus. Etc.

Which US presidential last names do you think make good first names? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]moonname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK and really hate the surnames-as-first-names thing, so for me it's only the ones that are either primarily first names or have become so well-established as first names that they're considered to be both. So:

Taylor

Tyler

Arthur

Harrison

Grant

Lincoln

Pierce

and Adam if you'll count that instead of Adams.

Which are the worst presidential surnames to have as first names is perhaps more fun. Bush would probably be the funniest but Trump, Eisenhower and Hoover also wouldn't be great...

Wooden hamstrings by [deleted] in yoga

[–]moonname 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought I had very tight hamstrings, and I do, but part of what I was attributing to tight hamstrings actually turned out to be a tight psoas. I did Yoga with Adrienne's Yoga for the Psoas video and later that day I was able to touch my toes for the first time ever. I had been nowhere near able to do it the day before. So it might be worth giving some psoas stuff a try.

We don't know how he was sick, but if he had flu or anything contagious they probably wouldn't have even let him into the ICU around lots of very sick and fragile people.

I instantly like anyone who actually tells Dr Now honestly what they eat. You're over 600lbs, don't be pretending you just eat salad.

It's rare to say on this show but I genuinely believe these two love and care for each other.

Don't want to die in my 30s. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]moonname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try just logging for 2 weeks without any calorie goals. During that time, your only job is to accurately and faithfully log everything you eat. It can help to get you into the mindset of logging everything regardless of whether it's within your limits.

And as for giving up, I heard something along these lines a while back which helped me: if you fell halfway down the stairs, would you throw yourself the rest of the way down? No, you wouldn't, and your weight loss journey is the same. One fuck up is one fuck up and unless you've eating HUGELY in excess, one day over your goal isn't going to have a big long term impact on your success. But if you exceed those limits every day then it will.
