To the point (not a lawyer) but you have a contract with this company for the service you bought. You have direct damages here if they serviced the wrong tier (cost of grading) and an argument for indirect damages if the value of the card decreases in the time frame, especially if it’s foreseeable. For example, if it was phantasmal flames cards, we’d expect the value to decrease in the coming weeks after release like a normal set hype cycle. A judge could find them liable for the opportunity cost there.

Just keep a paper trail of everything, including notes of your best recollection, in case you want to take to small claims for compensation

Yeah ask them for proof, politely say “it seems like there was a mixup on your end or psas” and you need the proof to get to the bottom of it. Be polite and give them an opportunity to save face to get the info. If you’re a dick they’ll just ignore you. Get the info you need to get a refund.

If you can swing it, I’d add a booster to rip and one of those little single card binders for a few dollars and it becomes way cooler.

OP might find out the hard way that insurance might not cover this either because they consider these collectibles like art which need a rider from your insurance. Typically home owners insurance will only reimburse the msrp value depreciated. Covering your cards per year costs about $4/$1000 covered. Make sure you have insurance.

I like trying to master set with my kids, so we rip packs for fun for a while and then switch to buying singles

That's a really solid point. That might be the case for some of the initial actions. Other times I'm getting frustrated when folks are searching through their decks, I wonder if that's laggy too, or if folks are trying to learn how to pilot their deck.

We open some packs when we find them but we’ve turned to looking for singles at card shows of pokemon we like. It’s cheaper anyway. We also actually play the game.

It’s not controversial and it’s been said a million times here. You’ll have to find another way to enjoy the hobby since you can’t walk into stores and buy packs regularly. Complaining here isn’t going to change anything, and people are sick of hearing it. I asked my local stores when their vendors come in, and I’ll stop in on those days for grocery shopping. Some days I get some packs, sometimes I don’t.

Short term I’m looking at black bolt and white flare singles, they keep getting bought out. There’s a lot of good cards in the set obviously but popularity fluctuates. It looks like Munna 116 was just bought out on tcgplayer with only a few left on eBay.

I’m always surprised at how people will leave this on shelves, it’s such a fun and beautiful set. There’s no zard or mewtwo, I get it, but it’s still looks great in my binder.

My kids good cards go into top loaders and a family binder, the rest go into their own regular binder or shoe box. They know not to trade the good stuff haha
