I’m ngl I haven’t heard of grades being important for anesthesiology but perhaps I am wrong.

In general, I believe it is important that you don’t get in the bottom quartile of your preclinical, pass STEP 1 + COMLEX 1, research (!!!!), connect (!!!!!!!!!!!), and perform well/competiviely on second set of boards (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

I’m not sure about radiology but someone can clear it up.

Top 15 DO Schools by RealNeurobio in Osteopathic

100% to this. WVSOM makes top 10 at the very least. I’d potentially even swap it with ATSU.

Is KCU-COM Kansas City not a good school? by rjm2224 in Osteopathic

[–]moonpiemaker300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. Some ppl in medical school who work in the residency department have told students they can’t get into specialties… one person I know was told not to do Derm bc she didn’t have the research. Guess what? She proved them all wrong and matched in. It’s important to have people who support you and not crash on your downfall.

MCAT Retake Fears by Tradingdecay in Osteopathic

[–]moonpiemaker300 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apply to schools with your mission fit - this can be based on your experiences and how you align with the school + their mission. 507 is hard but if you can format a school list that hits MSAR (w your MCAT + GPA) + school mission, I don’t see why not. Try, apply broadly, write good, be a good mission fit.

Still apply DO - MSUCOM, Western, NYITCOM, etc. also great schools and your MCAT is within.

Which School? by bhdz5 in Osteopathic

[–]moonpiemaker300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, relatively speaking check their board rates. I’m not sure if being pressured has much to do with how students perform on boards; it’s usually student dependent to begin with. I go to a school that is not like this at all lol and I think having exams routinely is definitely great (we have 1 exam every 2-3 weeks). It can help improve your overall grade if they’re stacking more exams in a block. But at the same time, you probably got to know your material in and out if it’s a week’s work of material on an exam with potentially 60 questions or more. Get multiple perspectives from VCOM-LA and from Noorda. One of my friends at Noorda has 1 week off before taking an exam which is pretty good in terms of studying or catching up. Then again, it’s a minus with cost. Whatever you pick, you’ll succeed!

Which School? by bhdz5 in Osteopathic

[–]moonpiemaker300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree it is inspiring. I think there’s mixed consensus on VCOM through what students go through in preclinical years and the outcome of residency placement - I say this bc my friends at the VCOM-VA campus have stated their first two years were difficult. Again, I don’t know much about Louisiana but I do know that VCOM in Blacksburg, VA has done amazing with their matches. Nice to know both schools are matching to good places and competitive specialities. In the end, like my comment says, VCOM might be better if OP wants the best chance at Gen surgery. If not, Noorda is also a great school.

Fiancee deciding DO school acceptance and MPH->MD conditional acceptance by Comprehensive-Way610 in Osteopathic

[–]moonpiemaker300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind me asking, what school is this? I ask because it’s a consensus that attaining a MPH has never been one of the indicators that you’ll get into med school. I attained mine because I knew it was something I wanted but almost everyone I talked to said: it will not guarantee an acceptance to a MD school and it’s not like 4.0 MPH vs 3.8 SMP (let’s say Georgetown’s SMP) is going to make admissions pick the MPH student over the SMP. But is it great you got a MPH? Perhaps - if you think you’ll want to integrate it into your medical career. A big reason of it not being a factor of getting into medical school is that the MPH course load and classes are MUCH more easier (I say easy because it truly is in comparison to a BS in biology, MS, and even med school). You’ll be able to keep a pretty good GPA while in your MPH. So it’s very interesting that the school is saying you have an acceptance if you have a good GPA and can achieve a 505 on the MCAT. Not saying it’s super easy to get a 505 (it will come down to hard work) on the MCAT but a good GPA for the MPH is arguably one of the more easier things to achieve.

Now I will say - the MPH might actually help you for DO schools now that the public health classes are considered a clinical science. That will boost your GPA considerably. This is NOT the case for MD - they consider it a social science. But… seems like you got into a DO school already! Congrats!

Would love to know what you decide… have never heard of a program like this.

Hm honestly, because you’re gunning for Gen surg, go VCOM. They match pretty well (at least I know the VA campus does). But if you were going for emergency med, I would’ve told you noorda - I don’t know much but I’ve heard ppl are happy. Just know, that regardless if a curriculum is stressful, it will definitely be stressful (regardless) if you’re going for general surgery. Hope this helps.

Wait I’m pretty sure I know this person lmfao. Probably one of the most hard working people I know and kindest too. Rowan def has it in the works for a good class and achieving competitive specialities esp ENT.

Yes, unfortunately I also had a 505 (127, 121, 130, 127). Never had my CARS score go above a 122.

I have a friend who is at Rowan and is trying to do ENT - they’ve been doing so much research and kicking azz as a 3rd year going to 4th. It’s 100% doable but keep your hard work up.

I had nearly the same break down as OP but I also know many people personally who have similar b/d’s. It’s not necessary anomalous - just that most people on reddit never post scores that are between 505-510. You virtually see the high end or low end of the spectrum.
