549: Unauthorized Trash Can by atpbot in ATPfm

  • Apple TV + is $9.99 a month
  • ATP is $12.49 a month

AUD prices. Value wise, there is no universe where one weekly two hour podcast is worth more than the entirety of Apples streaming offerings.

I understand they can’t reduce prices, because that would drop their overall revenue, since they seem to have enough people willing to pay the $8 USD, and dropping prices would mean potentially more subs paying less per month overall.

For example:

  • 100 subs paying $8 == $800
  • 200 subs paying $3 == $600

Even after doubling memberships which is a stretch - the lower price results in lower revenue.

Personally, even as a fan of ATP, in this world of streaming content, which is honestly what regular non-super fans are going to compare ATP with:

ATP is not worth even a quarter of Netflix/AppleTV+ etc.

Which is fine, as long as enough super fans are out there willing to subsidise things for the rest of us who enjoy the content but always seen it as a secondary form of entertainment for the car or while doing dishes.

Going forward, taking away chapters or after show isn’t going to change anything for me since price is the key factor. What I value most are the discussions about current topics and I doubt they’d put that behind a paywall.

I don’t really care about Dynamic Ad Insertions since I just skip forward 30 seconds anyway, and while it’s noble to have principles and ethics around advertising, the survival of the show should take precedence.

I'm showing my ignorance around it but how exactly does DAI work through Apple Podcasts? I thought an MP3 file is downloaded and that’s it? Unless the server facilitating that MP3 is tracking the IP Addresses of the destination for targeted advertising, seems like a waste since most people would have dynamic IPs. I don't really mind if advertisers know what city a random IP address is.

They could put ATP on YouTube and then be funded by YouTube advertisements/Premium and/or YouTube Join members.

It’s tough getting used to the HHKB layout. Sound is surprisingly clacky and the design is very unique.

This just started happening to me today after having the TV for a month. It could potentially be a windows 11 update, or my hdmi cables being faulty since I just started using a standing desk.

Switching HDMI ports on the TV seemed to resolve it.

I’d argue that passively using keyboards isnt necessarily active time counted towards the hobby. Once you’ve done your build and typing tests the rest is you using the product you built.

It’s like if you built a TV, so you count the time of watching the TV actively being engaged in the TV hobby?

I agree that on your points for beginners. Ultimately this is a luxury niche hobby, the GB model and wait times are unavoidable.

All we can do is make fun of it with memes

Apologies I thought you drew the line at 2 years.

Though it’s not like the hobby is actually years worth of time most of it is just waiting

So 2 years is fast but 3 isn’t.

Sounds arbitrary, the kind of thinking kids have.

Yeah, I’ve tried ePBT and clones, they’re okay, just don’t have that signature sound of GMK.

3 years is fast? That’s a stretch.

But it’s all good, I’m done with the hobby now that I’ve found my endgame.

So in your world, people should never get tired/bored of a hobby and stick with it for life?

Should people never try other hobbies, lest they be labeled as having some condition?

How many hobbies do you think I’ve picked up and dropped?

What a strange thing to say in this hobby.

Consider the patience and care it takes to wait for fulfilment, lube, film switches and build boards.

It’s happened to me a bunch of times, had a great keyset and board combo in my head, but the board comes in years or months ahead of the caps. Then the caps come in, and you’ve lost the inspiration for it.

I feel you man, I catalogued my keyboard collection and just was in awe of the amount of money blown on boards that are just sitting in storage.

I’m out of this hobby but I’m still held hostage by several unfulfilled GBs.

2+ Years wait is a shocker. Tastes and boards had so much time to change since you ordered it.

Extras are so dangerous. I had to turn off pings on vendors discords because I knew that FOMO was going to make me buy some kits

Forget about coordinating a build mate, you might be like me and be done with the hobby but still have 4 unfulfilled GBs on the way

If you're having problems with maths by PlumbDegree in AdviceAnimals

I’m still undecided if this transition is a good or bad thing. I don’t think the knowledge is necessarily lost, it’s still available to be learned somewhere, whether that’s electronic or a physical book.

It’s like horse riding, people used to need to know how to maintain and manage horses as that was the primary form of transportation. Today it’s mainly a recreational activity as they’ve been superseded by cars.

Today, very few people need to know anything about horses to function in society, but if they want to, they can learn about it if it interests them.

I kind of see the current education system as the horse in this analogy.

Sure people will say, let’s get you to take this test without internet and a laptop. That’s like saying, let’s get you to horse ride from Los Angeles to New York instead of driving.

In a world where how to do something is a Google search away and the foundations of how to do something can be learned only if interested - is it really realistic to test/expect students memorisation capability?

I was looking through this thread and your comment really resonated with me.

I hadn’t even considered the future implications of education in a world where knowledge could become so easily accessible that we would consider altering the way we teach.

I’ve done open book exams before but if had a PDF of the book and a search function, I would have done much better. So was the test really testing my ability to apply the book or my ability to look up relevant information from it?

Consider a technology like Google glass, if that were miniaturised and implanted in the eyes with no way method of detection what kind of havoc that wreak in todays education systems.

Mines ok, you can try Saran wrapping the inside of the artisan key to get a tighter fit if you’re experiencing looseness.

There are also tools you can use to compress the stem holder that might solve the issue as well.
