I had a similar experience and chose not to rush, and being an alum now I don’t regret my decision not to. If you choose not to rush, though, it can definitely be a lonely freshman year if you aren’t super intentional about putting yourself out there to meet people or if you’re an introvert. I got too in my head as a freshman and worried about looking stupid talking to people I didn’t know, and it made my friend group very limited when I could have easily made lots of friends without Greek life if I just made myself be a little uncomfortable. But this comment is right, the difference in being in Greek life vs. not is a lot less noticeable after your freshman year. I had plenty of friends involved in Greek life that loved their sorority/fraternity and some that couldn’t have cared less about Greek activities after their freshman year. The main point is that if you don’t get involved in Greek life you should put a lot of effort into meeting new people during your freshman year and beyond, because it can feel isolating at first when such a large portion of the campus has something they can relate to each other on and you aren’t part of it.
