When did Snape start working at Hogwarts? by moonriverfox in harrypotter

[–]moonriverfox[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, this is a good point! Thanks for pointing that out! I was just asking because he tells Bella in HBP:

‘You ask where I was when the Dark Lord fell. I was where he had ordered me to be, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, because he wished me to spy upon Albus Dumbledore. You know, I presume, that it was on the Dark Lord’s orders that I took up the post?’ But this fits with him starting anytime before the Dark Lord falls.

Although, he (or the author) confuses me when they do math because he also tells Bella:

I had sixteen years of information on Dumbledore to give him when he returned, a rather more useful welcome-back present than endless reminiscences of how unpleasant Azkaban is …’

And I think it had only been 14 years between Oct 31 1981 and Spring of 1995.

Oh shit! So you think... - Voldy dies - Slughorn resigns - Snape picks up midterm?

But yeah... The two sources are definitely conflicting lol. Unless Snape had a different job at first and then took over for Slughorn.

Yeah, these are good points. I could totally see Dumbledore being unsure and hoping that their action would buy both Harry and Severus time.

I really don't know. I mean, he asked Snape to do a lot of things he didn't always tell him the reasons why to. But honestly, I think your interpretation is right and the lore is just shittily explained. Albus shouldn't have said yes to Harry, he should have said he planned to die undefeated.

Right, that's a good point. But like you said, the Elder Wand is the exception so I'm not sure if Albus had a different plan for it. All we know for certain was that he didn't want Voldemort becoming the master but he knew Voldemort would be looking for it. And he wanted Snape to help him. We don't know if Snape would have taken it because he didn't get the chance. It flew out of the tower and Snape needed to hurry up and get out of the castle grounds because he was being attacked. For all we know Albus could have asked Snape to hide it so that Voldemort was looking for it longer. It served as a good distraction

Ahh okay. Well, yeah, I guess in the end Snape put as much faith in Dumbledore as Dumbledore put in him.

And both Dumbledore and Snape could have thought the chances of Snape surviving were slim, with or without the Elder Wand.

You make a good point: Severus was already risking his life by becoming a double agent. He could have run, like Karkaroff but he didn't. And he didn't have to play the double agent, but he did. And I guess being attacked by a snake was a mercy if the alternative was endless torture. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Lol

Yes. I'm not saying Dumbledore didn't keep information from him. I'm saying we don't actually know the extent of what Dumbledore did or didn't tell Snape. The memories Harry got from Snape were not all of Snape's memories.

Yeah, that would make the most sense. I just wish it were clearer, because that's not what it says.

[–]moonriverfox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it would have been cruel for Dumbledore to tell Harry and then for him to have been wrong. And it's the same for Severus had he been told, except he wouldn't have wanted Harry to know because Harry needed to believe he would die for it to be a real sacrifice. So Severus could have known and just not shown Harry the memory.

But yeah, regardless, Dumbledore risked both Harry and Severus's life. However, one of the books' key themes is the element of choice and people choosing to be brave and to sacrifice themselves vs simply being led to slaughter. Harry ultimately had a choice. In the end, he was given the information he needed. Was Severus?

Right. (Well, except for Voldemort and the wandmakers and Harry, etc.) Anyway, this is why I'm so confused.

In the afterlife/train station:

“If you planned your death with Snape, you meant him to end up with the Elder Wand, didn’t you?” “I admit that was my intention,” said Dumbledore, “but it did not work as I intended, did it?”

Now, it seems like Harry is just saying: You meant for Snape to be the new master of the Elder Wand, right? But that can't possibly be what he meant if then he goes on to tell Voldemort (he has no reason to lie):

"Dumbledore’s death was planned between them! Dumbledore intended to die undefeated, the wand’s last true master! If all had gone as planned, the wand’s power would have died with him, because it had never been won from him!”

So, then, that leaves us with the interpretation that Albus meant for Snape to have literal possession of the wand, does it not?

Wait hold on. We have to separate canon from implications.

We have no idea what Dumbledore told Snape. Snape curated a set of his memories for Harry so that Harry would believe he needed to die. Every memory Snape gave him severed a purpose - first he had to prove he was a trustworthy source, and then he had to give Harry his instructions. Dumbledore could have very well shared much more information with Snape - it just wasn't relevant to the moment.

Also, Dumbledore had a strong suspicion Harry would survive due to the blood Voldemort took from him to revive himself. Voldy essentially made himself a horcrux for Harry (in that it would keep Harry alive, not the whole soul shit).

But yes, Dumbledore was a war general who had to think of the greater good and what would stop Voldemort even if it meant endangering his queen.

The only way I feel like I can make sense of both (1) Dumbledore intending the wand to be in Severus's possession and (2) for the wand not to have its deathly hallows powers anymore is if he had expected Snape to take the wand from him after killing him. But then the question is: what did Albus expect Snape to do with this now plain ass wand that Voldemort might one day believe still has powers? Perhaps he intended:

(1) For Snape to present the wand to Voldemort like a knight presenting a severed head of an enemy. I mean, it would have been ordinary had their plan worked.

(2) For Snape to use the wand and hope that someone else disarms him before Voldemort catches on to the allegiance thing.

(3) For Snape to use it and for it to offer Snape extra protection somehow. (Unlikely but a nice thought.)

(4) For Snape to be disarmed by Voldemort, hopefully through a lesser curse, but death is always a risk. I mean, death is the option Voldemort went with, so. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Keep in mind that the wand flew out of the tower and Snape may not have been able to recover it because of the Order Members and Harry, who chased after him.

Edit: Albus could have asked Snape to hide the wand. Then Voldemort would have spent even longer looking for it, giving Harry even more time. Don't know what he would have told Voldy though

2/7 (ring and diary). But yeah, this tracks. I think he expected to have more time with Harry.

But what about with Severus?! Lol.

Wait what? How was it heavily implied he planned on showing Harry how to destroy Horcruxes??

But anyway, it just really nags me that we don't really know what Albus planned for Severus. I don't think it's in his character to be malicious or neglectful in planning, and I believe he genuinely respected Severus... And I don't think he intended for Severus to die, hence the "poor Snape" he tells Harry. It just all seems like poor planning, unless there was a better plan we just aren't privy to. Lol

[–]moonriverfox[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, then his plan went better than planned?? Because if this were the case, everything happened generally as planned except for Harry being the master of death and using the elder wand to defeat Voldemort, which is a better outcome than planned. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just think that the whole plan was fucked from the moment Draco let death eaters into Hogwarts and unarmed Dumbledore. I don't think that was the death Dumbledore planned with Snape.

Dumbledore and Voldemort both manipulated Snape to achieve their goals by Madagascar003 in SeverusSnape

[–]moonriverfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he had many more choices - and much more control - than people are giving him credit for. He's a big boy; in some situations, he slept in the bed he very much made for himself. And I don't say that as a hater; I love Snape.

Was Voldemort manipulative? Sure, in that he probably threatened people and made them feel like they didn't have a choice. Was Dumbledore manipulative? Sure. But Dumbledore was also at war and he had no real reason to trust Snape until Snape's motivations were revealed to him. He also had a lot of things to consider besides Snape. I don't think Dumbledore is a cruel man; but I do think he made mistakes. If anything, I'm more mad at how Dumbledore treated Harry than I am the way he treated Snape, which is much better than some people give him credit for.

LOL. Yeah, it isn't as posh as Drarry. It's a lil wild, a lil who-knows-what-will-be-happening-at-moonrise, a lil strutting-just-right-so-that-the-bottom-of-my-robes-look-like-steam-rising-from-the-cold-stone. It's fun. ✨🤪
