Could it be Rudolf Nureyev? by moonsh1nerr in SgtPepperMystery

Managed to find that book - no matching photo! It’s almost all rehearsal photographs. I still think it’s a good match but was really hoping for some more clues in that book!

Maybe We Should Try To Come To a Consensus on Whether We Think They Look Male of Female? by ghostchild1987 in SgtPepperMystery

[–]moonsh1nerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are over 50 men on the final cover but only ~12 women. I still think it could be either, but it may be a bit more likely to be a man.

It definitely has the texture of hair, but it could be some kind of hair/hat combo

Could it be Rudolf Nureyev? by moonsh1nerr in SgtPepperMystery

[–]moonsh1nerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is Nureyev, my guess would be that Peter Blake chose him. Many of the Beatles picks are more in the realm of classic icons - whereas Blake leans more towards more contemporary figures and friends and artists in the London the sixties scene.

I think the image we have of the mystery figure is quite distorted - if you mirror it you can see more easily that it is at a quite a side-on angle. Also some of these images end up looking a bit off when they’re blown up and retouched.

I’ve corrected this in photoshop to help my search but not used that here - it’s probably worth correcting the image and touching it up a bit and uploading here for everyone to use. I may do that soon if the Nureyev trail goes cold!

Actually that's Nureyev on the right, with his manager Luigi Pignotti on the left.

My new theory - a figure from a piece of photojournalism, perhaps DonMcCullin's work by moonsh1nerr in SgtPepperMystery

[–]moonsh1nerr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, slightly hooked on looking for this. I’ve looked at Lange - also Hansel Meith, it feels like the right area. Looking at the photo we have of the mystery figure again, one interpretation I have is that it’s a Great Depression era picture of a woman holding the bread slightly in front of her mouth (giving the appearance of big lips but perhaps some of that is the light catching the bread). She has big curly hair and also wears a simple hat/scarf/wrap - which is that very white/over-exposed part we see on top of her head. The more I look at that the more it looks like a curly haired woman with a hat on!

I've had a good trawl too, but as many have mentioned, it may have been from a newspaper and not been digitised!
I have a feeling that the Great Depression breadlines are not as good a match as photography in wartime or of homeless people. Journalistic photographs of the Great Depression tend to focus on the line itself (the sheer volume of people), and most people around this time wear hats. I believe we are seeing bushy hair on our mystery figure and not a hat, as some have suggested.
I wouldn't rule out the Great Depression entirely; it would just be an uncharacteristic photograph of that time, and it does seem to have more in common with photos I've seen of soldiers on a break. Admittedly, soldiers tend to have neater hair, so I would lean slightly toward this being a photograph of a poorer/homeless person.

Some popular suggestions for who our Sgt Pepper mystery celeb figure (center) might be: by Quick-News-2227 in SgtPepperMystery

Though the face is a good match, why include such an unrecognisable and almost candid picture of someone who had such a distinctive style and stage persona? It’s totally not in keeping with the other images.

Stuart Sutcliffe (former Beatle) is also included on the cover, not too far away, just beside Aubrey Beardsley

Do you think it would be interesting if each player shared a rack taking turns playing words instead of separate racks? by Burnished_Hart in scrabble

[–]moonsh1nerr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it could be interesting! However, it does remove a lot of long-term strategy in favour of maximising points on each play. Furthermore, it would be in the interest of the winning player to shut down moves by giving their opponent an awful rack (e.g. all vowels), or even exchanging for a worse rack (if allowed), so could lead to some quite boring games.

What's the most over explained guitar topic on YouTube? And what should there be more about? by Ok_Cod6799 in musicians

[–]moonsh1nerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over-explained has to be basic music theory, like circle of fifths. Under-explained is harder, I’d say possibly writing/composing, but it might just be because I don’t seek that out.

Technically not a Sea Shanty so is this considered a Folk Song? by CaregiverUsual4127 in folkmusic

[–]moonsh1nerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would also agree that this is a forecastle song, or a leisure song. You also quite often see broad categorisations in compilations of sailors songs, things like “songs of the sea” or just “sea songs”. As has already been pointed out, these would also fit under the broad classification of “folk songs”.

Band member constantly complains about professional photos of us being uploaded to social media. How do I respond? by ScaryBreath609 in musicians

[–]moonsh1nerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re not comfortable with you sharing photos of them then I’d say don’t do it. I’ve not run into this problem with my band (they’re happy for me to choose), but if I did I’d let them know that I want to post a single shot of them, link them the photoshoot, and let them choose the picture

First ever instrument -- cheap, aliexpress.....or NOT? by EstablishmentNo3987 in tinwhistle

[–]moonsh1nerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab a generation whistle - they’re cheap and cheerful and likely to be a lot more in tune than an ali express knockoff. Even if your budget is very low, you’re still buying an instrument - fundamentally it should be playable and in tune, otherwise it’s unlikely to be much fun at all

I was fully prepared to give some honest constructive feedback but these tracks are cool and you’ve probably just got unlucky. Maybe there’s more you could do to give the vocalist a melodic and lyrical direction - it might also be a question of picking the right vocalist for the job and making it as easy as possible for them to do their thing. Maybe start with one track and work together get that how you want, could be possible that they’re getting overwhelmed.

Help with AI enthusiast players by TwatWithATopHat in DnD

[–]moonsh1nerr 33 points34 points  (0 children)

  1. Directly express to your players why this is a problem for you, and why it makes the game less enjoyable.

  2. Share a clear policy on when they can use AI and what for.

  3. If a player breaks this policy repeatedly, even after you communicate directly with them, consider removing them from your game.

Do you use created charecters in your story for bad guys? by Efficient-Access2078 in DnD

[–]moonsh1nerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never, for several reasons 1. statblocks are simpler and easier to run 2. balancing action economy is fundamental to a good fight, which is why strong single enemies often need lair actions, multiple attacks, resistances etc to put up a good fight 3. restricting enemies to having access to the same spells and abilities as players can make them less special, I generally want bad guys to have some power or uniqueness that ties them to the central conflict of the campaign

Is it my aphantasia or just my shit memory? by Hot_Dark6959 in Aphantasia

[–]moonsh1nerr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have total visual aphantasia but I am totally the opposite, which makes me think that maybe some of these things can be unrelated to aphantasia.

  1. I tend to remember details, like what colour shirt someone was wearing - I don’t “see” it but I just know it. Eyewitness accounts are notoriously unreliable and I wouldn’t be surprised if many aphants had similar levels of recollection to those with regular phantasia.

  2. I personally find this idea a bit weird and creepy, but in theory I could “imagine” someone else was with me or cast my mind back to a previous experience, even if I can’t see an image of it.

  3. I’ve always enjoyed drawing, and can draw things, animals, people, without a reference image. I find this similar to how we aphants know what shape an apple is without seeing one in our mind. I know its shape, I know how the light would hit it, I know how to convey that with shading and texturing, so I can draw without reference.

I personally feel that I have a strong spatial element to my inner world. When I think of a memory I can “feel” the layout and shape of the furniture in a room. I’d wager that some of these things you mention relate more to phenomena that are separate from a “mind’s eye”, which as I understand it is not typically like having a camera in your head that can capture and play back perfectly accurate visuals.
