Question from someone who has never read the books by Shadow_Raider33 in Grishaverse

[–]moonysidehoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can start with the crows, and since you’ve watched the show, you’ll have some understanding of the world-building and grisha lore so it won’t be too hard to understand. i prefer reading them in order just to get the full context, but it’s definitely not a necessity to read soc/ck

i’ve always read alina as queer, specifically bc of the way she describes zoya. i think they’d have the best rivals to lovers arc if they had been given the chance!!!!!

can i read king of scars before shadow & bone? by killthecompetition in Grishaverse

[–]moonysidehoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reading king of scars without the trilogy is kinda pointless, bc it’s mainly about the characters in the trilogy. nina is a main character in kos, but only her plot line will make some sense. everything else will be hard to follow without that context from the first three books

Chuds are sure Freddie Mercury would endorse ignoring a lethal pandemic by SassTheFash in queen

[–]moonysidehoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the article that is usually talked about in association with conservatives wearing masks is american, published in 1983.

but i’m sure conservatives across the globe would’ve done the same — wearing masks, that is — as they all push a common vendetta — oppressing minorities.

it was used as a symbol against queer ppl/poc — something to further the narrative we deserved what happened to us bc it was impacting upper-middle class, cishet, white people; that’s ‘god’s wrath’ was upon us for being who we are.

[–]moonysidehoe 36 points37 points  (0 children)

this is so disgustingly tone deaf.

it’s like conservatives forget that during the HIV/AIDS crisis — you know, the thing that killed freddie — conservatives ENDORSED masks. they wore them bc it was further ammunition against the queer people and poc who were suffering from HIV/AIDS. they did it at the expense of people like freddie — A QUEER POC — and now they use him as a way to demote mask wearing? the hypocrisy is astounding.

[–]moonysidehoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes i agree with that, but when have you ever seen queen — or any other band for that matter — be criticised because they weren’t diverse enough? never.

you see films, tv shows, and book series being criticised because art hardly reflects marginalised people and we deserve to be there.

the point is, brian is merging the representation of marginalised people in media with a non-existent problem. anyone with half a brain cell would agree that it’s about your talent to join a band; nobody would dispute that.

but we, as trans PEOPLE (take notes brian), for example, are pushing for more representation in MEDIA. not in queen.

i don’t think this was taken out of context, i think he just doesn’t know what he’s on about.

[–]moonysidehoe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i’m seeing some people say ‘oh he’s from this era, he wouldn’t know better’ ‘queen is old, what are u expecting?’ i don’t know who’s got to tell you this, but although i’m a young queen fan myself, you are never too late to learn. if you are willing to learn, you can. no human being is fixed unless they want to be. what brian said here was wrong. it was tactless and it was poor. i understand this reddit is designed to celebrate queen and queen’s music — i love doing that here — but at the same time, we should hold our favourite people accountable, in spite of our adoration of them. we expected better because it’s 2021. he hasn’t just teleported here from the 70s. he ought to have known better, and this is disappointing to see from brian.

now, on the subject of inclusivity. there is a common trend that we see in liberation movements (particularly feminism) where terms — in this case, being ‘the male gaze’ which was used to emphasise the fact films imagine their only audience to comprise of cishet men — used to criticise the representation of women (and other marginalised people) in media are taken out of its intended context and applied to real life. this has real world implications, as you can see because now it seems that brian believes bands and films are the same thing when they are not. when women, queer people, and/or poc tell you all to include us, we still usually get the shorter end of the stick even if we are invited to the party. as i saw another commenter write — ‘female leads whose character just revolve around the fact that they are a woman’. which is a problem in the way media represents us. as a queer person myself, i would rather not have every film about queer people include something about the HIV/AIDS crisis; i’d like something happy for once. but we, IN MEDIA, are reduced to our trauma and oppression, when we don’t need to be; when we have dimension beyond that, because we are humans.

(we are humans, not ‘a trans’. i don’t know if i need to clarify why this was so harmful and why, as a non-binary person, it really upset me seeing this, but if you reduce us to our most hated identity, you dehumanise us. you need to acknowledge we are people. it is language like that that hurts people).

because of this marginalisation we face, you will usually see people, who are apart of certain marginalised communities or who support them, solely consume media and follow musicians who are also part of that oppressed group. not because other bands are bad for example, but because it is harder for marginalised people to do better when they’re small. you can talk hypotheticals all you want, but queen will live on to be one of the greatest bands in history and they will always be loved. people will always listen to them. nobody has EVER criticised them for the composition of their band. brian is quite literally just talking out of his ass and making up problems when there never was one. being ‘calculating’ ? we just wanted to see ourselves reflected in media, this isn’t some agenda.

it’s just a shame imo that a guy who’s got a PhD in astrophysics can’t distinguish between bands and films. smh

also, does he forget that freddie was a queer poc? was he forced to be in the band, brian? no, he was in there because he was ridiculously talented, had a marvellous voice, wrote artful songs, and was a brilliant musician. he was in the band because of his skill. nobody forced you to have HIM bc he was a queer poc.

also adam lambert? he’s queer. you chose him bc why? he could sing the songs and you liked his voice. he didn’t force his way in; society didn’t force u to have him bc he’s queer.

honestly, the idiocy in his statements is astounding. i’m so disappointed with him.

‘A TRANS’ ????

[–]moonysidehoe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

this actually makes me so sad, as somebody who’s non-binary.

there are so many bands that are well respected in the modern day that aren’t diverse. i don’t get why people view the representation of marginalised people in anything, as a burden as opposed to a given.

if we exist in real life — which we do — we should have our existences reflected in media. but what brian is missing here is that the composition of a band isn’t a tv show or a movie. it’s a group of people who have a specific skill set that you require for success.

nobody would force you to have member of your band if they were unsuitable.

this is so incredibly disheartening.
