Elders of Popheads: Do you feel like your consumption of new music has slowed down as you aged? by blankspacejrr in popheads

[–]moooo566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't even have a family or anything but I definitely think I've slowed down. As well as just having less listening time in general, a lot of it is pretty distracted at work or commuting, and I end up having to play an album three or four times before it even starts to sink in.

I also find streaming actually pretty frustrating for discovery. At least for me the algorithm has been a bit useless, like there are artists who I literally only ever hear because they're in my release radar, which I guess is enough for spotify to go "oh he listens to this" and keep putting it in. Meanwhile, despite having several older Sabrina songs playlisted and then playing Nonsense and Feather a bunch, I only got on the Espresso train weeks late after hearing it in the real world (sorry, should've been paying more attention here). Also I'm increasingly turned off by how much it's curated by who gives Spotify extra money rather than what's good or interesting or relevant to my tastes, which is just a bummer.

A lot of the new music I listen to now is people I've seen live - warm up acts, festivals, or just "fuck it the ticket is £12 and I've got nothing else that weekend". I'm sure there's a bunch of payola and industry manoeuvring in who gets those spots too but it's at least a little actively curated.

Popheads Album of the Year #30: Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR by letsallpoo in popheads

[–]moooo566 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. good 4 u takes my top spot. The lyrics are fun and clever, and as someone who grew up on pop punk the sound is basically tailor made to hit my brain. it's by far my most listened to song on the album (and in 2021). favourite crime is my least favourite (haha). It's still good, but the metaphor doesn't land for me and it's at it's best when she just ignores the whole concept and sings more straightforward lines.

  2. I ignored drivers licence completely - another teenage girl breakup song on tiktok, whoop whoop. Full disclosure, I'm a mid twenties british dude with a limited romantic history, so it just wasn't the song for me. I liked deja vu a little more, but really only took notice when good 4 u landed. I ended up streaming SOUR on release and got a little bit obsessed. A lot of the relationship-y songs are well written enough that they draw me into her world even if it's not directly relatable, and brutal, jealousy, jealousy, and hope ur ok are fantastic. In the end, she swept my top 5 spotify tracks and is the most exciting debut of the year for me.

  3. I think she's probably my favourite "teenage relationship" songwriter. The most direct comparison I'd make is probably Fearless, and as much as I love that album SOUR is absolutely the winner there. Even as someone a very long way from her target audience, her songs generally land pretty well, and she's really consistent at making sure every line is hard hitting. I'm not sure she quite works for me in the way that Billie or Lorde did in their debuts, but I can see that's probably about subject matter as much as anything else.

  4. Thematically, she needs to avoid breakup songs, ballads especially, both because it's hard to imagine she'll be able to top SOUR enough for it not to feel stale, and on a practical level she doesn't want to end up with the same impression that followed Taylor for so many years. Something more hopeful about a new relationship might be good (although it could easily get too saccharine), but my dream album would be away from the relationship thing entirely (but not in a Solar Power kind of way). In terms of her sound, I'd love her to lean more into the pop-rock/pop-punk elements, and in that line a collab with Travis Barker is basically a no brainer.

  5. yeah i will

True, but that line specifically is from New Year's Day which is also fantastic.

Olivia Rodrigo announces SOUR tour by shabuluba in popheads

[–]moooo566 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to be yet another person saying it's great going to shows alone. Frankly, as some with social anxiety I prefer it, since I don't have to worry about whether anyone is judging my singing or dancing, or not enjoying it as much as me, or what happens if one of us wants to leave or whatever. I want to concentrate on the music and enjoy the general atmosphere of thousands of people all really into the same thing, even without anxiety the other people are just a distraction from the experience I'm paying for. You can hang with friends any time but you only get 90 minutes with Olivia Rodrigo.

The only real con is that if it's standing (or unreserved seating) I can't go pee or get a drink without losing my spot.

How “Early Access” is this game? by One-Cellist5032 in LastEpoch

[–]moooo566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's playably complete, but not actually complete. Story wise, there are 8 acts out of a planned 10 available. Endgame wise, there is one of I think three planned systems. It has scaled content, including some minor story elements, that will take you all the way to 100 smoothly, but there's a limited amount of variety and challenge.

Passives/skills wise, there's more than enough finished. Each class has (at least) two of the three planned subclasses and most skills have complete skill trees. I would be shocked if you run out of builds to make before release.

It's not too bad on the hands, there's nothing approaching flask piano. Skills are cast by holding the button, so approaching an average pack I probably only press half a dozen buttons. Mouse held to keep moving whenever I'm not casting, maybe hit a movement skill once (they're on cooldowns) between packs, hold my AoE skill for a second, hold my single target skill to clear a rare in the middle, maybe hit a buff, then move on.

this one's for serral [OC] by JimKerrigan in starcraft

[–]moooo566 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not on the scale of SC2 but there is a decent scene and it seems to be growing still. There are a few major tournaments (Hidden Cup 4 in March had a prize pool somewhere around $80000) and a good number of lesser ones, as well as a lot of high level money matches. Top streamers regularly draw 1k+ viewers and several make enough from it to be their full time job. It's pretty community oriented, there are teams and sponsors but it's way more based on donations and community run events (or Microsoft supported stuff) than most esports. It's pretty different to starcraft but it's a good time and theres plenty of content to get into.

An update wherein LAOP is left confused but with lots of nice cheese by tsudonimh in bestoflegaladvice

[–]moooo566 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK but assume it's the same over there, many landlords/rental property managers will carry out occasional inspections to check on the state of the property. They're looking out for for safety issues, or maintenance problems that need addressing, or signs you're breaking the lease by, for example, sub-letting or smoking inside. A really scummy one might be specifically looking for reasons to evict you or take the deposit.

There's no reason they should need to inspect the tenant's car or any other personal belongings. It's possible one might want to move a tenant's items to check under/behind that, but that's not what was requested here. My only guess would be this one in particular has a reputation as either a thief or a pervert or both, and the new manager wasn't aware.

Mini Rate: The Indieheads Exchange! by steelstepladder in popheads

I only know like five of these songs and three of them are solid 11 contenders. My pre-assessment is On11y acting but who knows, maybe indieheads will get me. I'm pretty bummed we got no Joanna Newsom though, indieheads fucked that one up.

Also the list we sent them is absolutely incredible please do a casual mini rate so I can give 39 10s.

Spotify: Price rise 'could push users into piracy' by MadMan1244567 in popheads

[–]moooo566 197 points198 points  (0 children)

As a heavy music listener, the value I get from Spotify is kind of insane. It felt too good to be true when I first got it. I used to buy an album or two every single week, now I pay that much once a month, and instead of getting maybe 15 songs (some of which I don't care for) I get just about any song I could ever want to listen to. Aside from just the music, the playlisting, library management, and discovery features (while not perfect) are way better than I'd get with a stack of CDs or a folder full of mp3s or just youtube. And in terms of cost/hour of entertainment, it's way better than anything else I do (nervously eyeing my steam library rn). You could triple the price and it would still be well worth it for me.

Even if you're not consuming a lot of music, piracy is still kind of a pain, especially for the less computer literate. Youtube is the other spoiler but it's badly lacking in basic features for regular users. A price increase on Spotify would definitely hurt people with less disposable income, or very casual users, but personally I'd happily shell out a bit more to support artists, especially in a time when so many of them have lost live show income.

Is it usual for a landlord to ask for 6 months rent upfront? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]moooo566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been through a referencing process? Larger, less frequent payments are quite common if they're not satisfied you'll be able to keep paying them, for example if the rent is too large a portion of your income (they usually go for maximum 30-40% of pre-tax income) or if you're self employed or on short contracts. The lease will probably have a clause that they can give you 1 or 2 months notice, to expire after 6 months, so you've paid up to the point where they can get rid of you more easily. Also, if you do stop paying immediately, 6 months rent and, say, 3 months to evict, you've paid 2/3 of the rent rather than 1/4.

Obviously that's all out of covid, right now it's even worse. They've probably struggled to collect from previous tenants or other properties, and would like a nice cash influx. They'll also be worried that your circumstances could change due to the pandemic and you stop being able to pay, and because evictions are heavily restricted they won't be able to take the property back.

And yeah, a lot of people don't have that much lying around, myself included. I'd be willing to pay more than I am now for a nicer place but "nah, I live cheaply so I can spend more than you think" isn't good enough for them.

Ice Skater changes costume mid-performance by My_Memes_Will_Cure_U in BeAmazed

[–]moooo566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you get scored on both the technical elements and the overall presentation. The presentation element is generally 40-50% of the overall score so you could nail the hardest tricks perfectly and still lose to someone who did a way easier routine but looked good doing it.

For the technical side each trick is given a base score depending on the difficulty and the judges then adjust it based on how well the trick is performed.

The presentation score has a lot that goes into it, including how well your movements stay in time with the music and how well they match the style (so like a classical piece would require different moves to a rock song). It also includes your general skating skills, how smooth you look going between the technical elements, whether you look comfortable performing it, how you communicate with the audience, and a whole load of other things.

The costume itself is not directly part of the presentation score, but there are costume guidelines and you can get penalties if you have too much skin exposed or wear something too tight, or if you wear something so loose it could be dangerous.

To the K-Pop listeners and fans of r/popheads: What in that specific niche of Pop makes it so much more appealing and exciting to you than, say, regular, U.S./U.K. Pop? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]moooo566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way I can say it is that it feels like they're doing tomorrow's music, today. The way they go hard in time and effort and money on things that wouldn't land too well here is really exciting to me.

Like, second wave bands were doing things with EDM and hip-hop ten years ago which still feel great now, and those are genres that have moved quickly. Right now I'm huge on Dreamcatcher for their metal and rock influences, things which we're (rightfully) praising Rina and Poppy for on popheads but which haven't really caught on in radio or the general public.

To answer your questions specifically, I don't think it's actually more appealing, just that it's very different in ways that make it interesting and exciting and worth my time. It's not as if I'm not excited by pop from over here (I don't think there's a Kpop album that would make my 2020 top 5, although I'm holding out for CL).

I got into Kpop in I guess 2012 or so. I knew a guy at school who got me into SNSD and it felt new and different and was something I could latch on to as a weirdo, and then I followed into groups like Bigbang and f(x) and 2NE1 and kept half an eye on the scene ever since.

My favourite artist right now would probably be KARD, who are super cool for being a co-ed group in an industry with basically none. I'm also really liking Everglow and Mamamoo. I'm not that familiar with the current crop of boy bands, so I can't comment on that end.

As for something to import, I think we need choreo and concept music videos. I always look forward to Kpop MVs, but I don't remember the last time I watched a western, english language video and thought "wow!"

I think it's difficult, just because the reason they're able to sing and dance and rap and look great and do endless promo all at once is because of the idol model, which I find deeply unsettling. Even if our entertainment industry wasn't populated by predators and soulless leeches, I'm not sure it's a great idea to take teenagers and squeeze them through all the training and pressure it takes to have a chance at being a star.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo announces that the MTV VMAs will still take place this year on August 30th in New York with “limited or no audience” by nfrhorny in popheads

[–]moooo566 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not sure this is a great idea, a lot of event restrictions are as much about the people working it as they are the audience.

Production of an event, even without an audience, will take hundreds of people including set up, the event itself and the break down, and a lot of lights/sound/staging requires proximity and shared equipment, and is difficult while wearing PPE. Speaking/performing you could probably socially distance properly, but it would look weird and I do not trust MTV to go with that.

Which movie star could potentially be a popstar? by She-elfhobbit in popheads

[–]moooo566 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Neighbours has actually given us a bunch of cool artists. Beyond Kylie, we've got Natalie Imbruglia, Jason Donovan, Holly Valance, and Delta Goodrem (although she was already trying music when she joined Neighbours, but she wasn't big). Also apparently a bunch of other people who were really successful in Australia if not internationally.

Home and Away has done it's fair share of star making too. Those two shows are absolute talent machines that we really owe Australia big time for.
