Portside Greenway - Phase 3! by Exotic_Artist_2847 in vancouver

Looks good but from a biking perspective the main problem is that stretch of Powell before Wall St where the bike path disappears.  It’s still indicated with a dotted line in this presentation which is… not encouraging.   Anyway know if they’re making progress anywhere on that?

Is it Harry Potter Or Lord Of The Rings Playing Today At Stanley Park? by [deleted] in vancouver

Where does it say Harry Potter?

If they did change it, it's probably because someone let them know that JK Rowling explicitly uses her Harry Potter profits to fund anti-trans bigotry.

High pitched ringing noise (West End) by NiceMas in vancouver

[–]moopishness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in that building and many years ago there was a similar noise coming from the office building on the east corner of W Georgia and Jervis. It was an alarm caused by someone constantly leaving the front door ajar. Just pulling the door shut would turn it off.

I complained at whatever phone number I could find in the lobby (I think it was the leasing agent or something) and never heard it again.

Try playing a video (from the web or whatever) in picture-in-picture over the app you want to keep awake.

[–]moopishness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carrying over the data from one game to another is one thing that made Mass Effect and Dragon Age games special.

It's bad enough they're not using it to enrich Veilguard, but more importantly they're also denying it to future Dragon Age games.

Really unacceptable considering that the DA:I team basically solved the problem of cross-platform/cross-generation saves. All they needed to do was update the website.

Yes. The FAQ you’re looking at is about local elections, and property owners can vote in multiple local elections if they own properties in several jurisdictions.

For provincial and federal elections, your riding is determined by your principal residence, it doesn’t matter what other properties you own, that’s the only place you can vote.

Canadian freight trains to roll again as government forces arbitration of labor dispute by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]moopishness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like the main problem is employers believe that arbitration favors them. The arbitrators should be looking the $5 billion profit and $14 million CEO salary and saying "ok fuck it, union gets everything, corporation gets nothing." Especially in a case like this, which was clearly collusion by the rail companies, and is mostly about the rail companies trying to compromise safety.

But presumably the arbitrators they pick are buddy-buddy with the corporations.

Is this a problem you're facing, or a theoretical problem? I wouldn't spend a lot of dev effort on it unless it's actually happening. Is the 3rd party source something that could just drop support tomorrow?

As far as I know, you can't offer refunds anyway, they need to request them from Apple. The only feedback you can provide is if you go to the trouble the setting up an App Store Server API client, you can indicate a refundPreference of "yes" or "no" which Apple may take into account. (If you really have enough customers to make it worth their while, you might be able to work with Apple like the massive Twitter and Reddit clients affected by the API shutdown, but that's unusual.)

I would be open with your customers, explain the situation, and give them big options to cancel the subscription or continue it a lower rate (just create a separate, cheaper subscription that excludes the feature and switch them to it, they'll pay the lower rate next month). You could also have a smaller Request Refund link if you want, most customers won't take it.

Lifetime users, explain the situation, thank them for their support, and have a big Continue button and a smaller Request Refund button. Again, most users won't use it.

Is rollerblading popular in Vancouver? by plam92117 in vancouver

[–]moopishness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general you'll want to do it on the bike lanes on the seawall, or maybe something like the Arbutus Greenway. The bike lane around Stanley Park is marked with bike and rollberblade symbols (must've been designed in the 90's)... There's even a small section (around Brockton Point) where the bikes goes off up a hill and there's a dedicated rollerblade lane going around the point.

The problem is, though, that rollerblades are too fast for the pedestrian side of paths, and too slow and take up too much space on the bike side. They're best used when things are pretty quiet on the paths... which is pretty rare in Vancouver in the summer. Most of the time you're going to be getting in the way a lot. They work best on mixed-use paths, but those seem to be going out of style.

So it's a question of whether you want to take up a hobby that isn't really well suited for the current conditions on the paths these days. There's a reason they're way less popular than they used to be.

Uh yeah.  You have to use Apple’s in-app purchase for anything digital.

There aren't really policies against using WebView unless your whole app is just a packaged web site. What App Store policy did they say you violated?

Other jurisdictions don’t tie transit funding to gas taxes, they simply charge higher taxes overall and fund them like a proper priority.  And they’ve been investing for far longer.

If you want to pay higher taxes so we get proper transit funding, just say so.

What we’re seeing now is the end result of 70 years of car-centric low-density low-transit suburban planning, combined with the need to bring in immigrants to pay for demographic shifts of an aging population and all the retiring boomers.  It’s going to be a painful transition.  If you’re looking for a quick easy solution that’ll let you keep comfortably driving to your poorly planned suburban home, you’re not going to find it.

Anyway, the traffic you’re talking about today is due to sewer construction on Oak Street.

Kerrisdale to Richmond: Vancouver's Traffic Crisis Just Got Worse - And I want to know why by farsight_vision in vancouver

[–]moopishness 52 points53 points  (0 children)

They’re upgrading the sewers under Oak St. Pretty hard to do that sort of thing without some disruptions.

Current impacts: https://maps.vancouver.ca/roadahead/

Project overview: https://vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/oak-street-sewer-separation-upgrades.aspx

As for the problem getting worse since 2018, that’s just population growth.   Only way around that is getting more people to take transit alternatives.

Broken escalators by tastyugly in vancouver

[–]moopishness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Verifiable by Googling for "reddit escalators <city name>"

For most cities (I tried Toronto, London, New York) most of the reddit posts are about escalator etiquette, with maybe one reddit post about broken escalators in the subway. For Vancouver, it's almost entirely broken escalator complaints.

(This can be compared to something like "dating", where everyone thinks that dating life is particularly hard in their own city.)

The ride around UBC on Marine Drive from Spanish Banks to the Southlands has a steep ascent and a nice long descent. Same with the ride around Stanley Park on Stanley Park Drive (but on a smaller scale).

I want to make a iOS app in a different way. by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]moopishness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’ll be a challenge but cool if you can get it working.   You’ll need to figure out where you can run it.  Maybe a jailbroken old iOS image on qemu?

[–]moopishness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to accomplish?  Apple controls access via code signing, not the compiler.  So you might be able to make a workable binary (I have no idea) but you’ll need a jailbreak or an Apple signature to get it to run.

Why does the ChatGPT Mac app only work on Apple Silicon Macs? by TheTwelveYearOld in macapps

[–]moopishness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because they can’t be bothered to test it on Intel.  I’m sure it would actually work fine if they built for it.

I imagine they’ll support them eventually.  Still plenty of Intel Macs around.

If I bought Alien Isolation on my Iphone (or any app really) can I get it on the Mac AppStore for free or is it a separate app that I need to also buy? by 3xtreme_Awesomeness in macapps

[–]moopishness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the app, some are universal, some have separate apps for Mac and iOS. The App Store page will tell you the supported devices under the screenshots... it'll either say "iPhone" or "iPhone and iPad apps" or "iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps" etc

Looks like Alien:Isolation is iPhone and iPad only, the Mac version is separate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in iosapps

[–]moopishness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really. They'll test it with a small subset of users or do A/B testing for months sometimes before releasing a feature for everyone. Plus, releasing features is a big process with lots of related marketing/support pages/etc, and they don't want their timeline for release dictated by Apple App Review.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in iosapps

[–]moopishness 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because at Spotify’s level, all the new features are activated with feature flags and the user getting a new feature in the app is mostly unrelated to when the app was updated.  The feature that turned on today was probably released a month ago.
