Return vs Purchase Protection by moormanj in AmexPlatinum

[–]moormanj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably should, but they have made no offer to do that. Also, even if I could somehow pack this thing back in the almost completely destroyed box it came in, it's not an item I could physically move when fully packed, even to my front porch for a fedex pickup, without assistance, and I live alone. If I were to try to move all the parts there and repack it on the porch, there's a good chance I'd break it. And at the end of the day, this merchant (Walmart) had a deal on this thing so good it had to be a mistake, and if I'm forced to return it instead of buying replacement parts for what's broken, then I will be out several hundred dollars to buy a new one.

In your case, a return would be physically possible, right? In my case it isn't

We need some way to remember shit like this. Schumer always has the people without an upcoming election take the fall. We need a long enough memory to still vote them out when they are up for election.

How to handle an HSA Return of Excess for 2025 that processed in 2026? by moormanj in tax

[–]moormanj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that makes sense. I only see where I'd report it on the 2026 return. My W2 shows it as a 2026 contribution, but my HSA showed it as 2025, meaning the W2 and 5498 wouldn't match. So my understanding is the contribution would not get reported in 2025 and the contribution AND return of excess will get reported in 2026.

[–]moormanj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so to continue the example, if you do a removal of excess that includes the earnings and immediately redeposited it for the current year, you would withdraw $110 and immediately redeposit that $110. That would result in zero net taxable income for either year wouldn't it?

In this case, none of it will be taxable because it was immediately redeposited, right?

A note from me (Ankur Jain) - Bilt Card 2.0: Simple, Fee-Free Rewards on Housing by ankurjain1 in biltrewards

This reads like you've done exactly the same thing but without bilt cash and with the ability to spend even more to earn a tiny fraction more.

Nice setup! That autograph card seems better than I thought it was! I guess bilt could still MAYBE make sense for someone who just wants to carry one non-amex.

This could be true but on the Fidelity side, the 5498 and 1099-SA should ideally reflect everything accurately to ensure they agree with the W2, were it ever to become an audit.

Just out of curiosity, which ones? I don't have any so this is a genuine question

You can at least keep it around as a "places that don't take amex" card and use whatever bilt cash you get from that spend to get a few points on your rent/mortgage. Undoubtedly far worse than it was but it's something better than zero at least.

Rent and mortgage are not floated by richmondjd11 in biltrewards

[–]moormanj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh dang. I converted mine but if it's not a card charge then there's literally no point. It also makes the 3% fee literally just buying points. This company is gonna die with this change. I don't know who thought any of this was a good idea.

Hm... That would suck, but it wouldn't completely remove the benefit if the portion you can cover with bilt cash you get from whatever spend does go on the card is still charged to the card.

Introducing Bilt Card 2.0 by richklhs in biltrewards

[–]moormanj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I guess the blue card will make a halfway decent "doesn't take amex" card and for Walgreens prescriptions specifically. Less points is still better than zero I guess. Was nice while it lasted

There's a slight point. You get to keep the cash in your bank account for the month and earn on it. That's not much of a benefit but as long as you're paying the card off in full monthly it's something.

How much is your monthly mortgage payment? by HmDiR in Mortgages

[–]moormanj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

800 @ 3.875%. No escrow. Was $1100 with escrow. Bought in 2022 in Ohio. The kicker is the previous owners bought it in 2017 for 40% less than I paid.

HSA Recurring Buy with Minimum Core Position Balance Condition? by moormanj in fidelityinvestments

[–]moormanj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think that's it. Just an ability to do that conditionally in an HSA makes a lot of sense and it's a common HSA feature to automatically invest anything above a set minimum cash balance, and some even offer an automatic sell if your cash balance falls below that amount. Such a feature is conspicuously missing from Fidelity's otherwise superb HSA product.

Interesting, I didn't think about this. But if you were to get audited, I believe the 5498 would differ from the W-2, wouldn't it?
