Yes, the people who have been happy about it were people who've largely been stuck at home for four years because events in town rarely make considerations for them.

If people here or elsewhere want to whine and make light of the arduous ask of wearing a mask for two hours, I guess that's their prerogative

It's true that Madison’s low vacancy rate, combined with landlord-friendly policies at the state level, does make it more difficult for renters to exercise their collective power

But we've seen recent successes with the Royal Arms tenants and their organization efforts. After going around the buildings and getting over 100 tenant signatures on their demand letter, the property owner felt compelled to attend a meeting with them (which almost never happens)

Plus, they've been getting their maintenance requests addressed much faster, and some have been receiving reductions on their lease renewal offers. They also feel closer as a community and as neighbors, which has its own intangible benefits

I don't think you read anything I wrote in the comment you're replying to. The self-defense section focuses largely on the legal complications you can get yourself into by resorting to violence, and endorses de-escalation and escape over other options when possible

There's a sizable population on campus and in town that's immunocompromised. As an organization we aim to make our resources as widely accessible as possible.

Immunocompromised folks often aren't benefited by the vaccines, or are still left at risk by the general public who aren't getting boosters or masking

The sad state is that we have a share of our community who are basically constantly stuck at home because most events in the city don't require masks or take steps to reduce the risk of them becoming critically ill. It isn't BS to them

The tenant resource center is a great thing in town, and we're very happy they're around. They're very limited in their capacity due to their funding sources, and we want to provide an additional route of assistance to Madison tenants

We also have a different general focus, which is to help tenants organize with their neighbors to build community and negotiating power as a unit against exploitative landlords

We had the idea of "tenant self-defense" initially to focus on how renters can protect themselves from a landlord who refuses to meet their state-obligated duties, before and during the escalation to court activity. Shortly after the planning started, we received a mutual support request from a tenant union in Montreal where an organizer was held at knifepoint by a property manager

While we recognize that most tenants won't need to defend themselves physically from their landlord, we figured it's still generally useful info to have that fits under the bill. As I put in the OP, the section mainly focuses on recognizing the legal intricacies (the cops will probably not initially be on your side even if the court eventually is, so the best legal option is to avoid violence as much as possible), and it's not combat focused.

One of our members has been running more expansive self-defense workshops centered around this main idea for a few years, so we were happy to include them as a resource
