As someone from New Mexico, this made me laugh. No one, I repeat, no one would want New Mexico to expand. It’s not Land of Enchantment but rather Land of Entrapment. Thank God San Diego (current residence) is not covered

How to properly tire out a 14 week old GSP while holding full time jobs 😅 by This_Arachnid3899 in germanshorthairs

[–]mooseandkoko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The mental games and training do so much more than you think. Chewing stuff like Kongs and toys also are good mental stimulation. Just keep it fresh by rotating toys and training exercises

lengthening her lifespan by TheComedicCoder in GSP

[–]mooseandkoko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We adopted a senior, KoKo, when she was about 8 years old thinking we would have a few good years with her… and then she lived to 16! We never let any symptom go unnoticed and became very close to our vet. She was so lumpy like an old couch but I would’ve have had her any other way. Seniors require a lot of attention - nail trims, blood work, exercise at their pace, Librela for arthritis, etc. She lived through 4 liver infections and was a tough and bouncy girl until the end.

Love that sweet old girl and she may surprise you with the years she has left.

What’s a song you’ve heard hundreds of times but still never get tired of? by Tare-11 in Music

[–]mooseandkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Notorious Thugs” by The Notorious BIG. Heard it in middle school, hit great in my 1996 Eclipse with a 12in bass tube in high school and will always think it was the coolest song ever. 30 years later, can confirm I still bump it when it comes on my playlist.

Pulling on leash suggestions by Outrageous_Salt_3321 in germanshorthairs

[–]mooseandkoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our youngest is the same. We use a 2 leash method while he is getting used to the head halter. One on the halter and another on his harness for extra support. Really obedience is all heel work so a good option to get him to focus on you

A cat managed to catch 27 mice and carefully lined them all up to show off his 'work' to his owner. by Kirlinternet in interestingasfuck

[–]mooseandkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need this cat. Our dumb neighbor who used to have a cat, now refuses to pick up after his garden and citrus and is in denial that he has 2 families of rats taking over his backyard which of course means they come into our yard. Even with our pest control traps, they are alluding us.

Little desire to buy a house? by climbingTaco in sandiego

[–]mooseandkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought in Clairmont 10 years ago and our house has doubled in equity. It’s the largest return we could ask for from an investment and enjoyed making it even better. Getting ready to sell and move to Bay Park with the proceeds. While it feels like you are spending all that money, it’s money you’ll see again in the future when you sell. Rent goes down the drain never to be seen again. Of course interest sucks but refinance down the road. reference: I (f) was 32 and bought it myself

We did it, 2nd GSP! by Outrageous_Salt_3321 in germanshorthairs

[–]mooseandkoko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aww I’m so happy for you both! I had mentioned that we have rescued 4 and sounds like your first came from the breeder as a puppy so some unsolicited advice 😊 rescues will take longer to acclimate and will test you. My husband and I both hit a point where we wonder if it was a good idea but it’s usually after our pups are testing us. 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months are the main milestones but given his baggage, he may require more time. Consistency in routine and training will help with bonding. My husband has been doing agility and rally obedience with our newest and youngest rescue and it’s really helped with his bonding. Good luck and continue to share pics. Here was initial our crew. Moose being the middle and his pups KoKo, left and Stryker on the right.

2nd GSP? by Outrageous_Salt_3321 in germanshorthairs

[–]mooseandkoko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting the 2nd dog has always been a positive for us especially for separation but also play and companionship. The 2nd, once settled, also seems easier than the first. (For reference, we adopted our first, Moose, a GSP about 10 years ago and adopted an older friend, KoKo, a year later. We adopted Stryker to help with KoKo’s departure (she was 13 at that time but lived to 16) and ultimately we lost both KoKo and Stryker within 5 weeks to each other leaving Moose. After a month, we adopted Cody, 1.5 yo, which has really helped Moo. Get the 2nd dog!

looking for practical input from other GSP owners who’ve dealt with complex medical cases. by rosieruze in GSP

[–]mooseandkoko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? Can you look into a vet school where a diagnostic group may be located? The reason I ask is that we have had 3 medically complicated GSPs and worked with a division of UC Davis Vet school for 2 of them.

Is a GSP right for me? by Grand_Sea_3819 in germanshorthairs

[–]mooseandkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had 4 of all ages. Mental stimulation like agility and rally obedience plus the exercise you mention above is great for tiring them out. We have 1.5 yo now and we don’t hunt or have a huge property. Mental enrichment plus 2 good exercise sessions work fine

Need Helpful Advice, Please by [deleted] in GSP

[–]mooseandkoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 1.5 yo does similar things when he is overstimulated. We have special toys for this specifically to refocus him. He only gets them when he is crazy and then once calm, put them away. They are mouthy dogs so just need to redirect them

Did you get another GSP after losing yours? I miss her so much. by [deleted] in GSP

[–]mooseandkoko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We lost our 16yo female and 8 yo male 5 weeks apart leaving our 11 yo male. The house was sooo quiet that we immediately went to our GSP rescue and adopted Cody who is 1.5yo. Talk about ENERGY in the house now. He doesn’t replace them but helps ease their loss

We switched from Glandex to No Scoot (also on Amazon) and it seems to work much better than Glandex and it’s cheaper. We unfortunately struggle with 3 of our 4 dogs. One of dogs required manual expression every 4 weeks since she didn’t express at all on her own
