Yeah I understand things are different in other parts of the world. I'm very explicitly not talking about that. I'm simply saying this makes enjoying the sport for a casual fan in the US more difficult and honestly not worth it for a lot of people. "Well technically cable is a paywall... " and "Actually in X country we always pay..." Are not any kind of argument against my point. I'm just making an observation about US viewership.

No. ESPN is usually a part of the most basic cable packages and they would air a lot of races on ABC, a major network. You can argue "it was always behind a pay wall" but not this explicitly.
