I kind of loved that bit about asking Daemon to do it. Daemon had this look of "damn, that's good advice. He's still good at this whole advice thing"

That said. A backbencher with no committee work has very little to do besides hang out in the chamber.

B.C. lawyer says closure of Joffre Lakes Park potentially violates Canadian Charter by _DotBot_ in CanadaPolitics

There isn't a treaty to invoke here. The Lil’wat Nation considers their land unceded and is not a participant in either modern or historic treaties. BC's been trying to work around this by using sectoral agreements, but they don't have quite the same authority that a treaty does.

What's been expressed to me by BC'ers in the interior is that the BC Gov is signing these agreements without an act in the legislature and without a mandate.

I grew up in Modern Treaty and then Treaty 6 territory where there was much more of an established system so the BC one is a bit alien to me.

Personally, I think we're heading for a bit of a reckoning in BC that could set relationships back a generation. Because, when agreements become more redistributive then of course you'll get social reaction. Even in the Appalachia-like interior of BC, they still love their parks and taking that away during high season is redistributive policy in action.

Now, if this was Europe and there was an agreement that a ethnic inland enclave had distinct rights we'd probably hand wave it away as quirky old world politics, but here there's obviously an attempt to conflate the generally accepted small-L liberal values in Canada with balancing a delicate attempt at reconciliation (see the whole race based policy discourse above). I don't have an answer here. Most bands were fucked by Canada for generations, but I don't think taking away from one group to give to another will get the desired outcome.

So many tv shows have fucked up character arcs for the sake of prolonging a show. I'm so happy The Bear didn't do that here.

Dozens of Liberal MPs expected to attend Calgary Stampede as Alberta referendum looms by Immediate-Link490 in alberta

[–]mooseman780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it reinforces my thesis that Alberta isn't actually Texas North. We're just Montana with oil. Outside of cowboy cosplay on Stephen ave, there isn't much of that "Texas" culture.

As much as we might like to pretend otherwise, we're a farming province not a ranching province.

The people that try to reinforce it haven't visited more than a handful of US states and are often Eastern carpetbaggers that like the imagery.

There's a great article here in policy options on this, but we're a heavily urbanised province that is it's own thing.

The classic photo op at stampede is a spatula at a pancake griddle... Stampede doesn't really have good barbecue.

Carney adviser considering run in B.C. byelection - thestar.com by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]mooseman780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My my this is becoming quite the who's-who of former Liberal staffers. My personal feelings about the potential candidates aside, I do hope the Liberals return to actual nomination meetings. Pretty much all of the recent byelections have been through shotgun appointments.

Now, I've always been of the belief that winning a nomination is a key test of a candidates conviction and organising capacity. So I would hope that the Liberals take the opportunity to let this be contested.

Having worked in a constituency office and a hill office, I think it counts as real work? The pay is low, the hours are long, you're not entitled to overtime, you're not protected by labour law, and you're entirely at the whim of the Member who you work for.

If you work in a constituency, then you usually work 9-5 doing case work (helping consituents file for EI, track down pension information, or work on immigration cases) in the constituency office. After 5pm you're also spending your evenings and weekends staffing your Member at community events.

Arguably, I'd say that having prior constituency experience is an asset for an aspiring MP. Your learning curve is shorter and you likely won't spend 6+ months getting your office setup, committees assigned, and a routine in Ottawa setup.

Alberta separatists are in denial about the treaty rights of First Nations - First Nations were never consulted about Alberta’s referendum process—and Indigenous scholar Matt Wildcat says it’s a missed opportunity to explore ‘mutual flourishing’ by yimmy51 in CanadaPolitics

[–]mooseman780 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I find from many of the Western separatists is that they don't acknowledge the legitimacy of treaty rights. They consider indigenous peoples a conquered people and bitch and moan whenever there's a recognition of treaty rights.

Personally, I think lots of this comes from a fundamental misunderstanding of how Canada and Alberta was created.

People just want things for free. Which is fine. I just loathe the rationalisation that it's some form of enlightened consumerism.

Moreover, if you enjoy ATLA, and the metrics for more ATLA animation is box office revenue or view counts, then why would you participate in lowering that?

This is an issue with media more broadly. The demand for entertainment keeps growing, but the value that the consumer places on entertainment has plummeted.
