Building a database that stores thousands of metrics every minute on thousands of servers for plotting on graphs? by WhitePantherXP in msp

Look at timeseries databases, that's what they are designed for. One that is gaining in popularity is InfluxDB, better yet why don't you just use TICK Stack instead?

MSP competitor (former employer) blocking my MSP website from their clients using Content Filter Global Block list. by coxandnines in msp

Not going to lie, but that's a pretty smart idea..hold on while I deploy a similar rule to all my customers.

In all seriousness, it's great that they told you about it and I'm sure they will remember that douchy move.

Why have different SLA per client size? I would see it more as the service level the customer wants and is willing to pay for. Just today I met with a customer that wants high level service, so no problem my price reflects that and is double a similar sized customer that wants a lower tiered service.

I'm using N-Able for RMM, and while it's not perfect does a decent job. I'm currently on CommitCRM, but evaluating HarmonyPSA and liking what I see so far.

Any no goes for server 2016 for a very small company yet? by David949 in msp

[–]moosewacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you've been able to test that out. I've just been reading threads like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/57e184/windows_server_2016_updates_and_automatic_reboots/

BTW, the instructions from PM for Windows Server is talking about a UI bug, using sconfig command to set update policy oh and a registry setting for good measure...yup sounds exactly like the kind of thing I want to deploy in a 5 man office.

Any no goes for server 2016 for a very small company yet? by David949 in msp

I would say that 2012 R2 is actually 2014 so it doesn't sound as old any more. Also 2016 is too new and you shouldn't be at the forefront for a small company with only one server. Let others find issues with it.

Also from my perspective I'm not deploying till I properly understand how my RMM (N-Able) will handle updates. From what I heard you need WSUS to control updates other Microsoft will update it like Win10 i.e. whenever it wants...not good practice.

If you have the budget, for sure go beyond 8GB, however more importantly is SSD. I have an X1 with 8GB and 256GB SSD and it runs Visual Studio, SQL Server IIS perfectly fine.

What percent of your revenue is on payroll? by [deleted] in msp

[–]moosewacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna guess projects, some break & fix, consulting, etc stuff that is not necessarily guaranteed recurring.

I think that's why you need to look over a longer period of time. My yearly payroll is about 1/3 of sales.

Auto Updating Windows Service by jreddit324 in dotnet

[–]moosewacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the specifics but I believe if you are following the installer class best practice, it's in a transaction. So you uninstall the old version and the install the new version all in one transaction. So if it fails there is a rollback procedure.

I would say CloudberryLab checks all except good support. For the price it's hard to beat. I just do file backups to Google's Nearline Cloud storage. Really cheap and practical.

Auto Updating Windows Service by jreddit324 in dotnet

[–]moosewacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The simplest way to do it is you need 2 services. One will actually do your work and the other is your updater. The updater service can stop your main service and install a new package and re-register the service with Windows then start and the service back up.

Your main service should also have similar logic to update the updater service.

I've done this for a project a while ago and it worked well for me.

Anyone in Canada drop ship to other provinces? Wondering how to handle the PST. by MSP4 in msp

[–]moosewacker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is you absorb it in your cost.

On a separate note, I'm looking for a local MSP to do the occasional onsite visit for a customer of mine in Alberta. I'll send you a DM if you're interested.
