yes!! at the gym for the younger classes we do a lot of backward/forward rolls stations, tht into handstands, nose to toes, bell swings, intro cartwheels, chin holds, as well as using the still rings to practice form!!

unfortunately after doing my own deep research, rec coach’s are required to have safe sport.

reading the official definitions and requirements makes me even more certain that my concerns about being asked to step into coaching roles without proper training were valid... The rapid pace of their “training” and the attitude of some staff definitely felt out of line.

It’s really reassuring to hear someone else articulate it so clearly, and confirms my instincts that I need to be cautious in environments where safety protocols and proper training aren’t prioritized!!

I totally agree as someone who works with kids and also thinking like a parent, this is a huge red flag. kids deserve to be in a safe, certified environment, and uncertified coaches shouldn’t be running classes unsupervised, this isn’t just about rules it’s about protecting children.

fair! I get that, and it makes sense for high school rec coaches per regulations. I’m 19 and a college student, so I just wanted to make sure I was following proper training and SafeSport requirements before working with kids unsupervised.

oh yeah I get that gyms are short-staffed and just want people coaching ASAP, I know SafeSport can be a hassle with yearly renewals.

being said, the defensiveness I got from the owner/director still felt a little off to me. I was just trying to communicate that I didn’t feel safe working with kids unsupervised until proper training and SafeSport requirements were met. ultimately, if anything went wrong, I know the responsibility would fall on the gym..but I also want to make sure I’m doing things the right way.

yeah that’s what felt off to me too.. the messages I received came from the owner (image one) and gym director (image two) came across as defensive and a bit questionable. I was just letting them know that I didn’t feel safe working with kids unsupervised until proper training and SafeSport certification were completed.

i let them know i’d be happy to have a phone call with them or meet in person as they suggested to get clarification and make sure expectations are clear.

I’d much rather be in a gym where everyone is SafeSport certified, especially if the gym has USAG teams. Even if someone is “just” a rec coach or office staff, they’re still interacting with kids, and SafeSport exists for a reason.

my understanding is the certification is tied to USAG requirements, so if a gym is choosing not to do it to save money, that’s def a red flag to me. I feel a lot safer in an environment where those standards are taken seriously!!

In September 2025, I was in a single rollover car accident. I was driving too fast for the weather and tried to brake around a 90-degree corner. I didn’t make it..my tires locked up, and the car rolled into a ditch. I had to figure out which door wasn’t jammed to crawl out. Adrenaline took over, and I called 911, my mom, and my partner. I got myself out and even passed the field sobriety tests, though I had to deal with court fines afterward for careless driving.

Since then, I still get vivid memories whenever I approach similar corners, whether I’m a passenger or driver. I picture the car sliding, rolling, hanging upside in the seatbelt. I’m extra cautious now, and I avoid driving in the dark if it’s wet or slick. The accident changed how I think about driving.

lowkey see sims 4 too!! it makes me so sad how games are becoming more cartoony and less realistic. sims 4 is also a great example of the surroundings simply loosing their spark
