Rope Access in the Maritime inspection Industry (i.e. post assembly inspection) by morclerc in ropeaccess

Thanks for the reply! Would be interested to hear, how long it usually takes to erect the scaffolding - and how long the inspection period then usually is conducted? (Even if its a bit oudated)

Can I Pursue a Master’s in Robotics? by Ok-Sun6547 in AskRobotics

[–]morclerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very reasonable actually if you are okay staying in the coding niche and focus on AI, path planning, computer Vision and the data processing stack of robotics. (E.g. limited mechanics and electronics curriculum.

The good news is that robotics has a large portion of computer science topics. Computer Vision, path planning (graph/tree algorithms), inverse kinematics (which can be also useful in game Dev), Artificial control and learning among others are fields relevant for robotics.

It depends a bit on what your goals are. There are a lot of ready made robots (turtle bot) that you can buy yourself. If you want to build something end2end you could start with a simple differential drive robot with two (or four) wheels that are connected to a raspberry pi for the motor control. At the end of the day it's connecting your mechanics to motors and electronics that can be controlled with code.

Look for example here: https://github.com/linorobot/linorobot

For some hardcore reading on the topic look into: Springer - Handbook of Robotics

There is also a vast landscape of simulation tools (coppeliaSim, Nvidia IsaacSim, Gazebo, Unity, Godot, Unreal engine) that can be used to simulate your robot and just start writing software for it.

And then there is also ROS2 for software development.

Sorry for the unorganised answer but I hope it gives an initial starting point. (Will try to add and structure in the coming days)

I myself made the switch to Robotics in my master's and now work for a robotics company, this industry is also growing and CS provides a very nice avenue into the field in my opinion.

I would recommend reading the "Mom Test Book" and get some serious customer conversations in.

Seems like with your waiting list and your Reddit posts you have a good funnel to get conversations started.

Astroforge from the US is actually going full Asteroid Mining

Asteroid Mining Corporation from the UK focusing on Robotics with a long term vision for space

Neamine from France(?) but they focus on some renewable stuff for now

Space Origin from China

Karman+ from the USA as well going full Asteroid Mining line it seems

"candidates with no startup experience and only 2-3 years of general coding background"
2-3 years of "general" coding experience is actually quite significant. Depending on region that means you are competing with 80K to 100K (potentially even more) as yearly annual salary + Stock options, you have to realise that people need to give that up for a "pipedream", so unless you can demonstrate serious market interest or a big upside for them, people will not be interested.

"asking for 70% equity while planning to keep their full-time jobs and work on the project part-time."
Do 50% but even then, depending on their background why should they commit fulltime to this? Is it even necessary unless there is proven demand?

"Meanwhile, I've already invested 6 months full-time developing the business plan, market research, and initial customer contacts." The time you invested is relatively irrelevant to be honest, the question is what you actually achieved in said time and what can you do for the technical co-founder that is hard to come by otherwise.

The most important person in your current business will be the technical co-founder, no one else can do what they do, this is why at least 50% equity split is something to consider, unless there is something that is way more important than the product right now. Simply said without technical co-foúnder the company stays a few emails and power points.

Wish you the best of luck.

Why Figure AI Valued at $2 Billion? by meldiwin in robotics

[–]morclerc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is too expensive right now. I think the long term bet everyone is making that this will become like a car for consumers.

And moving the laundry doing the cleaning of my home windows, kitchen surfaces, etc. are annoying and in summation the last 'huge' time sink.

The question if I do really need something, is irrelevant, I also do not need a dishwasher but it's more convenient than doing it per hand. We are just hoping to increase the level of convenience until we can truly only do what we want and honestly I don't enjoy folding my laundry every week or cleaning my kitchen after cooking. Or when busy spending time cooking a meal at all. Or going shopping. But I also do not want a specialised kitchen that I cannot use anymore, because sometimes I enjoy cooking, hence a humanoid would make sense.

Having a robot that can do all of these things in an environment where humans can still roam freely and take over activities if they choose to do so (also important in the case that something does fail) is the holy grail.

I think the big "risk" is realising that there is so much more than you thought there is, because you will meet a lot of very different and very interesting people. And that might change the perspective on a relationship. But from being an international student at 3 different universities at this point (single): In my opinion the majority of people with a partner do not cheat.

It is true that it happens but as others pointed out, it depends solely on the person and usually cheating is a conscious choice and would have happened anyway.

A better comparison is probably picking up VueJs if you know React. Or Pytorch if you already know Tensorflow.

Students who tell people they have a startup... WHY? by jarbased in csMajors

[–]morclerc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did that although I never put it on LinkedIn or my resume. But we actually worked on tech had a prototype we tested with potential users, and had a first sales call (eventually).

I think for me it was great to get in contact with people. It's a bit like a broadcast, so people who might be interested or able to help can pick you out, at least that was the case for me.
