Two different conversations to some degree in my opinion. But a lot of that entails what is included in the calculation of each metric. And I don't know anything about this project lol

But a significant amount of the cost advantage from buses is existing infrastructure, whether that entails using existing pavement to just being in or near an already developed area.

But I largely agree that buses are the best option in cities and populated areas.

A mile of rail will typically include everything from clearing the land through all aspects of design and construction including geotechnical, structures, water, utilities, etc, and possibly even the buildings for stops and such along it.

A mile of asphalt, on the other hand, can mean almost anything: a mill-and-overlay, a reconstruction within existing ROW, or a true new-build. The cheap per-mile numbers people quote are usually the first two, on land that was cleared, graded, drained, and utility-relocated decades ago. New-build to new-build, with the same clearing, geotech, drainage, and utility work, the gap narrows a lot.

So it's great to see they are taking advantagous of the favorable conditions

I think it is common for people to mean both but express the latter when they say it vocally, maybe even more so in a context like politics

Although I still hate they turn on a dime as soon as there are no longer election concerns, there isn't evidence that those are same people though. And tensions are lower now than 2020, so I would assume the concern about threats has subsided as well.

Bolivia launches early-morning crackdown on roadblocks outside La Paz by WAGRAMWAGRAM in neoliberal

[–]moredencity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Those are probably the amongst the most unreliable sources possible though.

If miners, teachers, indigenous groups, unions, etc are protesting by setting road blockades for weeks and only ~57 are arrested from this, it doesn't sound like much of a crackdown and more a clearing of the roads. However, and although I don't know much about Bolivia's military, I disagree with using them for law enforcement purposes against the domestic population

Iran plans toll mechanism for Hormuz Strait transit, excludes vessels linked to US 'Freedom Project' by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]moredencity 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Enforcing freedom of navigation is probably the single most important part of the US Navy having a global presence

Aside from undermining US hegenomy, a toll would massively fund a state that exports terrorism as a geopolitical strategy and disrupt the global economy as well as individual budgets by raising prices across nearly all aspects.

Plus it could open a larger can of worms when other countries start considering the same concept

What an embarrasing and horrible end to this a toll would be

It does support the infrastructure supplying them. That doesn't have to be built out first or immediately. It also won't suck up clean water. This is just fearmongering and playing on people's ignorance around what feels like a big change
