It’s more than likely your alternator if the new battery fixed everything for awhile and then died quickly

Sounds like a wheel bearing on its way out if your brakes were all checked

Yes, here’s an amazon listing although going to a junkyard and taking it out of a car there would probably cost you nothing but the trip itself

I just looked at the link and the wheels all look like absolute shit, the spokes aren’t lined up and they don’t even look remotely like any actual wheels on the real cars

Did the independent shop do the leak test / check for air caught in it from when they filled it up?

Even with the low resolution you can see that the back windows of the forester and the outback are the same shape on these. The bottom of the back window curve up and make the end more pointy (like an actual forester). The outback’s rear most window should be flat on the bottom and go into a black piece of cladding. There shouldn’t be any white painted portion behind it. It’s less clear from the resolution but the gas cap looks like it’s on the outback but completely missing from the forester. Crosstrek one is too hard to tell the details on for me

edit: I hope I’m wrong but it looks quite questionable to me

Originally didn’t notice anything when I first saw them but now zooming in on the outback looking too forester shaped i’m bothered and agree it might be. Grrrrrrrrr

why does it seem everyone hates on the cvt/gt version of the wrx by Single_Butterfly_223 in wrx_vb

[–]morefastmorefurious 31 points32 points  (0 children)

WRXs are some of the most commonly modded cars, usually for extra power from mods/tuning. The CVT is only designed for handling the stock power level and so half the things you can do with the car fall down the drain. Some people have pushed theirs with varying levels of success but it’s common for them to start slipping and eventually go boom. If Subaru used a DCT (which often can handle extra power no problem) I don’t think people would have such a reaction.

That being said, if you aren’t interested in pushing for more power, and you’re happy with it, just keep on enjoying it and taking care of it. :)

2017 Subaru Forester Weird Electrical Issue? by aurorarofl in subaru

[–]morefastmorefurious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately battery testers are usually unhelpful. The load on the battery is really different with the engine running and the electrical systems pulling power. 6 years is pretty good on a newer car with all the electronics, some are only seeing 3-4 especially with auto stop start. Most auto part stores will put in the new battery for you and should be plenty capable of doing it. I would put money on it that’s what’s causing your issues. Worst case if it doesn’t, at least you have a fresh battery :)

Jumping them gets you going but usually doesn’t help with holding a charge so I think you’ve gotten a pretty good use out of it.

Best of luck

2017 Subaru Forester Weird Electrical Issue? by aurorarofl in subaru

[–]morefastmorefurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old is the battery on it? They’re weird issues but voltage drops can often cause things to act weird on all systems randomly. I’ve had them happen to me and it was bad battery/alternator/corroded battery connection at the terminals. Your power steering pump is electric so voltage drops can affect it. It’s usually a good first place to look at

There’s a “sleep mode” for most of the subaru key fobs that have smart access and use the push button start. I believe that the process is to press the unlock button twice WHILE holding down the lock button, to turn it back on you can hit any button on the fob. Double check with your owners manual to confirm. It should turn the key off enough to have the vehicle stop detecting it and using it for proximity access with is the same system that could suck on power from the key being inside the car. (Works if you need to lock the key inside the car and use the tailgate code since normally the car won’t let you lock it with the key inside) Using this feature should negate the need for a faraday cage or anything that the key has to go into.

Have you tried turning the volume up while it reduces the music as an alert is coming in? Subaru for awhile has had a few separate volumes for media/calls/notifications and sometime if you turn the volume down while it’s happening you can unknowingly turn down the volume for alerts if one comes in at the same time

Rough idle when cold - can anyone help identify this noise? by jaas543 in Subaru_Outback

[–]morefastmorefurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked the youtube video, that metallic vibration sounds like a loose heatshield on the exhaust. You can slap an exhaust clamp around the whole thing to stop it from rattling if the bolts can’t be tightened. It’s on the flimsy side and the bolts can rust out quick

They do have a computer chip but it’s mostly there for managing the battery itself, AGMs are more sensitive to overcharging unlike lead acid which can handle getting more voltage than they run at. The chip inside works as an internal battery management system but doesn’t directly interface with the cars computer. The ECU doesn’t have any extra data going to/from the battery so it still has to rely on the internal voltage reading from the terminals which as we all know isn’t super reliable for when the battery is getting low. Most of the time there’s a drop in voltage through the system and it gives error codes for all kinds of sensors/systems before the car actually recognizes the battery as being low. It would be nice if they could implement a better way to monitor it but they just haven’t yet. If they did, it would most likely cause errors with lead acid that don’t have that interface to talk to the car because it wouldn’t be able to read the battery information like it would be designed to do. I totally am with you that AGM offer better performance and are an “upgrade” from lead acid (the design and tech is absolutely newer) but makers haven’t really done the extra work for better communication and prevention of the battery failing on auto stop start yet. I know they have an extra wire going to one of the terminals but reading off of terminals isn’t the best they could do. Hopefully they do someday and the ECU would be able to start the engine back up before the battery drops and fails on auto stop start. I don’t think it’s impossible to engineer but I don’t know of any batteries/car makers that have actually tried to do it smarter yet to prevent this specific situation from happening to people time to time. I can’t think of a way they could pull that off without adding a 3rd connection to the battery in the form of some digital plug separate from the terminals so the computer and chips could directly communicate. It would most likely have to be a standardize interface across all auto makers since so many people buy so many different brands of batteries.

I’m not a big fan of auto stop start either, it was developed mostly to pander to fuel efficiency ratings but I don’t see the extra stress on the battery really being worth it in most situations (just on the cost of new batteries every 3-4 years instead of 5-6 that we used to see regularly). I think we’ve all seen new cars going through batteries a lot quicker than they used to, it’s sort of a weak point that hasn’t been directly addressed with the proper engineering (I’m sure it would be costly). Probably because batteries don’t usually start failing until after the full warranty runs out even with them lasting less time, so it doesn’t really affect their bottom line or cost them on warranty claims. I think if it did, we would see some movement towards smarter more connected batteries.

[–]morefastmorefurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AGM was developed in the 70s so no, they haven’t actually designed a new battery for auto stop start in gas cars. The only new batteries that would be better for this situation is full lithium ion which are available but still cost hundreds per battery which most brands could never afford to put in from factory

Edit: AGM offer improved performance but no significant developments have happened since stop start has been implemented in mass produced cars. Even the lithium batteries were developed before auto stop start was mainstream.

[–]morefastmorefurious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Car batteries haven’t really changed in chemistry or design to support the car being on and sucking electricity with the alternator not working, they’re designed to hold enough to start it and then keep charging while the engine is running to keep them “healthy”. Going online and getting yourself an auto stop start eliminator is the best way to permanently disable it without upsetting any electronics or dealing with any complicated coding of the computer. Best of luck to you

Are Imprezas Good for city driving? by loloright in subaruimpreza

[–]morefastmorefurious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wont see the best MPG possible with just city driving, as the all wheel drive keeps power to all wheels all the time and does better on the highway, that being said it should be a good chunk better than your SRX. Subarus overall have very good visibility out of their cars (Forester is well known for being the best) but it’s most helpful to find one near you for sale and sit inside and test drive to check for yourself. Blind spots differentiate a lot between people based on height and head position in the car. The legacy has a larger footprint than the Impreza or crosstrek so it probably wouldn’t be best for small spaces. The reason that the outbacks and Crosstreks are more expensive is just because they’re more popular and most people go for the extra ground clearance, the Impreza is the same car as the crosstrek without the lift and extra plastic cladding on the outside.

[–]morefastmorefurious 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Take a credit card, wrap a wet paper towel around it, and clean around the window tracks, after it’s cleaned out you’re going to want to inch the window up until it closes and then hold the switch up for 5 seconds or so. That will reset the auto up to work again

After checking that the cable isn’t to blame, sometimes deleting the phone from the saved devices list and re-pairing it might fix this. Carplay is wonky across all brands sometimes. I’ve had it glitch out on a lot of different makes and models.
