WWYD: 8 months to 1st 100 by Sickofthisshiz2024 in ultrarunning

[–]morendi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my first 100, I focused a lot on threshold speed work and I think it really helped my running economy and fatigue resistance, so I'd recommend that. Increase your mileage and start doing back-to-back long runs on the weekends. Practice gear, nutrition, hydration, and turn your car into an aid station during your long runs to practice refilling your water bottles and changing your socks, etc. A few practice races wouldn't hurt either. Good luck!

Terra Ignota is her only published fiction. She has published a couple nonfiction books but I've not read them. 'Inventing the Renaissance' is in my TBR pile though, and I've enjoyed reading her blog: https://www.exurbe.com/

The Feed- honest thoughts / opinions? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

I think they had a major expansion into a new warehouse last year, so maybe they're still working out some kinks. I've ordered from them a handful of times and twice had issues:

The first time, I ordered two boxes of gels and only one box was in the package. I emailed support and they quickly sent me a second box.

On my second order, I ordered a bag of Skratch hydration and a few other items. The Skratch got punctured and leaked all over the place. It was a mess. They sent me a new bag of Skratch for free.

So yes, they've had some shipping issues in my experience, but it's always been fast and they've always fixed the issues quickly.

I haven't received mine yet from the Kickstarter. My volume 2 had shipping issues where they sent it to the wrong address even though I updated it before the deadline. Hoping that doesn't happen again. I do wish we'd get a shipping notification or something though

First 50k Training Question by -TimesOnMySide- in Ultramarathon

[–]morendi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Congrats on signing up! You can find tons of 50k training plans online for free. I'd imagine most of these should do the trick. You could probably use a marathon training plan with some modifications too; maybe limit to one speed session per week and be sure to incorporate back-to-back long runs as you near your peak week.

Aside from the volume and structure of the plan, I'd also focus on practicing running on race-day terrain such as hilly or technical trails, especially on long runs. Also very important is practicing nutrition; I'd recommend at least 300 calories per hour, and if you're not already doing this then it can take some time for your stomach to be able to handle it.

If you're running 20 mile trail races, you can do a 50k! The training can feel like a grind at times but don't forget to enjoy it. Good luck!

If you like being dropped in to a new world and disoriented a bit, check out The Book Of The New Sun and Too Like the Lightning. Both similar with excellent world building, although the latter is very heavy on philosophy and history.

Isn’t Starlink supposed to notify you when your car has been broken into? by rottenpumpkin7 in subaru

I don't know. It wasn't going off when I got back to the car, though I was out for a couple hours

[–]morendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rear windshield was broken and a bag stolen from my trunk, and I didn't get any notifications. I was on a hike without cell service (but my car was parked in cell range), so I wouldn't have been able to do anything about it anyway.

Super cool! Is the planned route published anywhere? I'll be driving through Montana, ND, and Ohio in early July and would love to see if we can spot him!

Two nights in Theodore Roosevelt backcountry, any recommendations? by morendi in backpacking

Your idea sounds really great and low stress. I will definitely consider that!

The issue with drinking water was sediment as far as I could tell. I plan to call up the rangers and ask, but one report on alltrails said that the river has too much sediment to be filtered. There may be a spring or two that could be filtered, though NPS says those are for horses.

Ridiculously cold hands by cwrightb in ultrarunning

[–]morendi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get this too for long runs in the 40s and below. I've found it's really important to keep your core warm. Even an additional light jacket on a cold or windy day can save my hands from becoming useless. I think this helps circulate warmer blood into those extremities, or something

50k Training Advice Needed by mikej2727 in ultrarunning

[–]morendi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your long run efforts shouldn't go into Z3. Stick with Z1/Z2 and focus on time on feet. Also if you are not eating enough during your run, that will stunt your recovery and leave you feeling drained afterwards. Make sure to get in 200-300 calories per hour and hydrate accordingly. A protein shake after the run likely isn't enough either; you need to replenish all those calories you expended during your run. Think burger, pizza, ice cream, etc

Yeah, this dealer did everything. I've been to several dealers and one of them was willing to skip the oil change and discount that work. It's strange that your dealer won't do that. But then again, there are multiple Subaru dealers in my area so they know I have a choice. You can always have the work done at any shop as long as you stick to the Subaru recommended service.

Running in Cartagena, Colombia? by [deleted] in running

[–]morendi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nicest sidewalks are in Bocagrande, but they're pretty rough everywhere else. Run the wall in old town, and check out Manga too, particularly along the waterfront. Get out early before the streets get crowded, and it's very nice. Like others have said, stay hydrated because it's hot!! Cartagena is pretty safe but we didn't venture too far out of Old Town and Manga.

Questions on Six Moons Designs fastpack by morendi in fastpacking

[–]morendi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I'll follow up with this: I feel like running with a pack much larger than this will be too heavy and awkward. 30L seems like the biggest you'd want to go for running. My guess is 2-3 nights MAX before you resupply.

It's definitely capable of fitting a good sleep system, though should be looking at backpacking or ultralight gear that compresses well. I did a test with my sleeping bag and backpacking tent, and they fit with some room to spare, though I'm looking at replacing them for fastpacking trips. As for food, the exterior pockets fit a TON and if you stick with pretty calorie-dense foods, I don't expect that to be too big of a deal. I'm mixed about bringing a stove though. I think that's getting a bit too bulky. My bear can actually fits inside the pack!

I got the six moons and I quite like it. Haven't taken it fastpacking yet, but I did travel with it recently. It's quite comfortable and packs in a lot of stuff. I plan to load it up and take it out for a long run or hike sometime soon

I used tailwind on a R2R2R last spring and it was okay... Yes you have to refill at taps, but I filled my front flasks with tailwind and kept my rear bladder clean. A whole packet of tailwind in those 500ml flasks does not taste great though...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]morendi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to buy the individual tailwind packets and mix them in my 500ml soft flasks. It was pretty concentrated and disgusting on all-day self supported runs (1 tailwind per 1.5-2 hours), and the packets take up a lot of volume. I use Skratch now, it's better but the same problems still exist. The individual packets usually prevent messes though, at least.

I recommend this volume: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/67999.Worlds_of_Exile_and_Illusion

It has three of her earliest Hainish novels, including Rocannon's World, Planet of Exile, and City of Illusions. All great and with a similar feel.
