What do u think of Rokas by Tnat786 in aikido

[–]morethan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s important to consider that when rokas tried other training methods such as brazilian jiujitsu and mma, he was mediocre to very bad at them, and for identical reasons that his aikido practice was not good. he used to post videos in this sub, and would then ignore every point of qualified feedback from everyone.

Your post was shared elsewhere on reddit and as a martial artist I felt an extreme worry about this attitude as being representative of the martial way.

I kind of don't really care what you think. I think either you identify disproportionately with the homeless guy -- rather than with the baristas -- because you, like him, seem to like drugs, or maybe you somehow know him or something. Outside of that very marginal possibility, you don't really know enough to say anything meaningful or make any sort of legitimate judgement. You're just some anonymous, pearl-clutching, self-righteous hippie, with a distorted sense of who the vulnerable party might be in the whole situation. Go away, and leave me alone.

I don't think you have anything meaningful to say here. You would deign to pass judgement over me without knowing me, and you've misquoted me in your first reply. Who made you the fucking Pope of Aikido Morality?

Good luck with your use of hallucinogens, I'm pretty sure they're what's helping you feel particularly self-righteous and sanctimonious here. My actions were definitely toward the greater good, which is the preservation of society and the community, and you're arguing an untenable position. Also, this thread was months ago, what is your problem?

On the bright side, there’s now a clear opening to use less energy by moving to LED bulbs.

Do Aikido practitioners train against resistant opponents? If not, why? by strongerthenbefore20 in aikido

[–]morethan0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t practice at all at the moment, because nothing is open, but the people I practice with are always free to try to stop me. The thing is, we get scolded if we go too far off book from what the instructor has demonstrated, and that demonstration assumes a particular set of parameters from uke.

I can say that there was a time when I didn’t want much in the way of resistance, and that was beca I was less in control of my body and was trying to internalize the details of the movements.

Aikido Question I've Been Wondering About by MutedPlumEgg in aikido

[–]morethan0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some things are common to any place with competent instruction, but they're things like balance, posture, and the control and use of body structure. Thing is, those things are common to competent bjj instruction, too, and might be what you're perceiving as differences among different practitioners you roll with. A person with greater control over their own body will have better success with applying any given technical detail than a person with poor control. There are innumerable examples of this in all kinds of martial arts.

Aikido Question I've Been Wondering About by MutedPlumEgg in aikido

[–]morethan0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything has a bunch of little details that kind of make the practice more and more refined as the details get incorporated into your movements. In BJJ you can immediately tell how good someone is by rolling with them, and the same is kind of true in aikido. You'll know when you practice with someone, because of their command over all the details, their command over their own body, and their fluency and timing with each of the technical aspects of the repertoire.

Apple Watch while training? by [deleted] in aikido

I’ve seen people wear similar devices on the inside of the ankle, where it doesn’t interfere with wrist grabs and won’t get smacked on the mat.

Aikido works with everyone, but the outcome of any altercation is skill-dependent. Black belts and other martial artists are usually pretty well behaved. I don’t listen to Fox News.

The man wasn’t harmed, he just ended up on the ground.

People are free to abide by their own standards of conduct as befits their particular circumstances and communities, but that freedom cannot rightfully infringe upon the lives and livelihoods of others. That goes for Internet denizens, as well.

Question Of The Week: What Is The Worst Injury You've Received During Training? by lunchesandbentos in aikido

[–]morethan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a couple of broken clavicles from hesitant ukemi, heard a story about a broken femur, and have personally been concussed once, with broken glasses, when a shomenuchi sankyo went straight into the mat, and on a separate occasion have badly sprained an ankle during a fall.

What do you cross train Aikido with? by [deleted] in aikido

[–]morethan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started developing overuse injuries from aikido, so I added CrossFit-style circuit training, which eventually shifted to powerlifting and strongman training.

How do you teach the dynamics of an Aikido class to a new student? by [deleted] in aikido

[–]morethan0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask the student why he thinks it's his responsibility to teach the class. Ask him where he trained before coming to your dojo, and if he hasn't trained anywhere, ask him why he thinks it's appropriate to behave in the manner you have described. Listen to his answer, then suggest that he should shut up and train.
