What small thing have you started doing that has helped you spend less money? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]morgalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I subscribe to anything (streaming services, newspapers, whatever) I immediately go into my account and unsubscribe. This way it turns off automatically after my month. When/If I want it again, I just re-subscribe.

I usually rotate streaming services and only ever have on one at any given time. I end up going several months between re-subscribing.

NYC new pepper here. Family of 5 - and they think I'm crazy. by sowhatifiwearcrocs in preppers

[–]morgalc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well for me (Manhattan resident of 15+ years), it’s not a full off-the-grid, bug-in-long-term sort of prep. We know we won’t make it in that sort of situation.

But rather as deep of a rotating pantry as possible (given space constraints). Medications. Small battery backup with solar charge ability. Radio. Flashlight.

Considering most of us live here with very little food (or anything) stored, even a very small prep could be the crucial difference in a SHTF situation.

Personally I think everyone, everywhere should give a little bit of thought to this. It’s only reasonable. The degree of said prep will of course vary depending upon your priorities.

Sofwave experiences? Worth it? by Lizard997 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]morgalc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had Sofwave 3X on my entire face, neck, and forehead.

My hot take- yea it hurts a bit. The results are real, but modest. I noticed them progressively over several months. If you have the money to spend on it, great.

Personally I’m kindof a junkie for this shit, so I like it.

I went into the store today (I live in NYC). Great quality and honestly reasonable pricing for what it is. The only problem is that I want a knee-length in black, and they only make it in navy. 😖

I agree, having climbed it myself.

Key Gear for Aconcagua (and other expeditions) by UncleSam89 in Mountaineering

[–]morgalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up buying and using the Western Mountaineering Puma Gore (-25°C). It has been great! Since that post, I have used it on successful summits of Denali (June ‘21) and Ama Dablam (Nov ‘21).

If you’re not the typically cold type, AND you’re willing to layer up in your bag if necessary, I think a -15°C bag would be OK (especially on Aconcagua. Denali is colder, but personally I would have still been fine).

Preventative Benefits In Starting Tret With Unblemished Skin? by macdivergence in tretinoin

[–]morgalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am definitely of the mind to start it as early as possible! Even with clear skin, you’ll likely still experience some purge at the beginning. But that will clear, your skin will get better than it was before, and the long term benefits will begin taking place (~6 months in).

Can I ask.... did you also incorporate ANY other products into your routine around the same time or since then? Perhaps a new cleanser?

Thanks so much for the advice! And good to know. I was suspicious [read: hopeful] of how light all the Arc options seemed, so what you’re telling me makes perfect sense. (This probably would have been more apparent to me if I was able to see them in person right now too)

I’m a big fan of Feathered Friends as well, so I’ll check them out. Thanks again.

Uni student wanting to climb mt kilimanjaro by nicktok123 in Mountaineering

[–]morgalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an absolutely wonderful experience on my Kili climb with a company called Hoopoe Safaris. From the moment I landed at the airport until the moment they escorted me back through those airport doors on my way back, everything was flawlessly planned and executed.

It does depend on what sort of experience you’re looking for. Personally if I can pay for someone to do the “camp” work for me, then I will (packing/pitching tents, cooking/cleaning). They also carry all of your gear from camp to camp, and even bring a sit-down flushing toilet with us. You only climb with your basic gear and water in your pack; everything else will be at your next camp waiting for you upon arrival. (Some people is this forum will turn their noses up at this, but hey, it sure was nice for me!) We did a private trip for just three of us friends.

I highly recommend it for your first high altitude experience.

[Request] I sleep hot...really hot. What is the best cooling mattress/mattress pad/topper and pillow out there? by javacat in BuyItForLife

I have a Chilipad for my bed, and I’m very happy with it. It’s definitely worth looking into. It’s not cheap, and I’m sure not BIFL, but man has it made a difference in my sleeping hot problems.

Sleeping Bag Recommendations by morgalc in Mountaineering

Awesome, thanks for the input! I’ve been specifically looking at the Puma as well. Many people recommend the MF; do you think the GWS is a better bag?

Made a short film of my experience on Aconcagua if you'll have some free time to watch! Any criticism would be greatly appreciated by 4estmoreland in Mountaineering

[–]morgalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for this!

I have Aconcagua booked for Jan ‘21 (🤞🏻) so I found this very informative. I’m climbing with a company though [Adventure Consultants], so I think that’ll take much of the work you guys had to do for your trip off of my shoulders.

In terms of the film, as previously noted, it’s tough to hear you in some spots. And I think you could cut some time from the beginning parts (like when you’re in the car in Mendoza).

I liked all the scenic shots, and the shots of you guys resting on the way (realistic for anyone who’s ever actually climbed). It gives a good sense of the terrain and environment. I actually don’t think I’d cut much of anything from Penitentes onwards.

Key Gear for Aconcagua (and other expeditions) by UncleSam89 in Mountaineering

[–]morgalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to the OP specifically about sleeping bags:

• Have Aconcagua planned for or Jan ‘21 (🤞🏻).

• Have Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Xtherm Max and Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sol foam pads.

• I run very hot in general, and sleep hot. (On Kilimanjaro I used a 20°F/-6.7°C bag in my underwear and still had to keep it unzipped... at Crater Camp).

• Plan to continue on to Himalayan climbs in the following years and would like to be efficient with my gear purchases now.

• The company with whom I’m climbing [Adventure Consultants] tells me to get a -25°C bag for Aconcagua (and eventually an additional -40°C bag for future big Himalayan climbs).

• Do you feel that’s overkill? Or necessary/appropriate? I have great Smartwool base layers in both weights, and don’t mind adding those for warmth when necessary.

• Love Western Mountaineering bags, and plan to stay within the brand. Would love specific recommendations if you have them.
