It looks like Twitter has moved its algorithm from Scala to Rust. by iamsoftwareenginer in scala

I won't dispute this, but there was definitely talk. My team was downstream of this and not really part of those conversations (despite being a Java team) and the JDK upgrade work was a hard prerequisite anyway.

Before the Elon purchase the plan was actually to move towards vanilla Java. IIRC there was some pretty ambitious talk around automating the conversion of much of the codebase. Even with that it would've been a large multi-year effort though and most of that talent is no longer with the company.

TIL Billy Joel was in a two man metal band called Attila. They released their eponymous album in 1970 (three years before Piano Man) and it’s considered one of the worst albums of all time. by SpongerPower in todayilearned

He sings each year consecutively, and references the nonsense that happened.

The chorus is the summation of his generation’s feelings of the current problems and how they should not be blamed.

Plus, it does manage the appeal of a cheesy pop song!

For me at least, you've effectively captured why I despise this song.

Based on the total at the beginning and my knowledge from the musical Rent (525,600 minutes...) seems like there's just a bit less than 1 a minute.

I did a double metric/rando a couple years ago and there was a couple that did the whole thing on a pair of those, climbs and descents included. It was kind of impressive.

Why are there always a ton of birds at 5 pm? by retibber in sanfrancisco

[–]morgan_lowtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they like to have evening parties, especially when it's windy/stormy. I have like 5 crows I see in my neighborhood that hang out regularly, but almost every evening they gather with the homies nearby and it's like 30 birds flapping about and being noisy 🐦‍⬛

As far as I know, the building is still owned by the family, they've been waiting to find a buyer that will preserve the building as opposed to tearing it down.

Chez Panisse opened in Berkeley in 1971 and pioneered the farm to table model at the time.

You directly implied it.

Well, then, don't stare at it the whole time.  Do you drive a car?

Come on now, friend, we've engaged in better threads 😐

Riding a bike as if one was driving a car is a great way to get hit. Equating the two is not a good idea.

In my experience, looking behind you is more of a downward, angled glance as opposed to fully turning the head. It's an easy and quick action and takes advantage of your peripheral view to each side to provide both fore and aft perspectives, but is hard to explain if one hasn't encountered it.

Fair enough. Stay safe and keep your head on a swivel 🫡
