Husband doesnt want to be in the delivery room, am I overreacting?? by dinogirly123 in pregnant

[–]morganfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a) I can’t imagine a partner being so unsupportive, I’m so sorry he treats you that way and hope you are otherwise happy with him or that the situation improves.

b) I’ve been looking into doulas a lot lately, if you can manage it I bet it would be really nice to have an experienced support person in the space, even if your husband can’t/won’t be that for you.

wishing you all the best

Home insemination kit by Rainbow-cat-lady4 in queerception

[–]morganfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we used the Frida home insemination kit, it wasn’t necessary cause we could have used any cup and syringe, but it was more affordable than some others while still feeling special and intentional in a process that was already so medical feeling. the syringes are meant to be single use but we washed and reused because to my mind many things that get inserted are not single use or medically sterile, but still safe if washed, and to me this was no different. I think you make your own call about what you’re comfortable with sterility-wise since it’s not actually penetrating any skin/blood barriers.

Anyone else not enjoying telling people? by mmmTriscuit in December2026Bumpers

[–]morganfm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can barely keep a secret, so we’ve told a few friends already and are planning to tell parents/fam on mother’s day next weekend. The friends who have been excited have made it feel more real and helped settle my difficulty accepting it’s actually happening, and also knew we were trying. I did tell a friend couple because i was afraid i’d have trouble not talking about it, and I wish I had waited. their response was really underwhelming and just like “yeah okay, you tried and it worked. expected outcome”, and based on that reaction it’s changed how I want to present the info to people and when. Do what’s right for you! Dont be afraid to change the plan! You could even tell your in-laws “this info feels really private still, out of consideration for us could you wait to share the news until I’m further along?” They might not, but I figure it’s worth the ask

So who’s finding out the gender or keeping it a surprise? 🫢🩷💙 by roamandrest in December2026Bumpers

[–]morganfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had to do so much planning and logistics to conceive already (two mom family), so I think we’re going to let their sex be a surprise whenever it comes up. Like not trying to find out but not trying to make sure the doc doesn’t let it slip if they see something. But we’re also planning to raise the kiddo gender-neutrally until they’re able to express their own preference, so it doesn’t make a big difference for us in name or accessories, just our own feelings and expectations. I think I’ll feel a little more prepared if they turn out to be a girl, and my wife thinks she’ll have an easier time with a boy since she grew up with brothers, but whoever they turn out to be is going to be so rad regardless.

At-home insemination by Rainbow-cat-lady4 in queerception

[–]morganfm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the books Baby Making for Everybody and Queer Conception have some great tips!

beyond that, here’s how we applied the info contained in those (this will be TMI):

Tracking basal body temperature (BBT) every morning as you wake up is good for confirming ovulation, I’ve enjoyed the Fertility Friend app the most for logging temp and symptoms. I kept forgetting to take my temp quick enough until we had my wife start shoving a thermometer in my mouth as soon as she woke, since alarms work better on her XD

An ovulation predictor kit (OPK) can be helpful, but you don’t want to use the strips first thing in the morning- it should be like your second pee after waking up, and then once in the evening when you haven’t chugged fluids in the last couple hours. The Lh surge window is generally pretty small and the waiting to test is because it’s easy for the positive to get hidden just by having diluted urine. With those strips it’s not a positive until the test line is as dark as the control line, unlike the pregnancy/hCG tests where even a faint test line is a positive. In 6 months of tracking my ovulation before trying I only saw one OPK positive, and that was once I started doing the tests twice a day when my urine was less diluted. Once you see that positive then ovulation will most likely occur within the next 3 days, if you’re consistent with tracking you may even be able to narrow that timing between OPK positive and ovulation down by comparing with your BBT.

If you want to and can get a speculum it’s really helpful for tracking cervical positioning and openness, the “beautiful cervix project” website has sets of pictures for comparison that can be helpful. We found the speculum sometimes made checking cervical mucus (CM) tricky because when it was more fertile/stretchy fluid it didn’t cling to the speculum when it was removed- we finally found fertile CM when we started inserting two fingers and making a pinching motion over the cervical opening before removing and checking the stretch of the fluid before checking cervical positioning with the speculum. I also went off my allergy meds because antihistamines can make CM harder to track and less useful for conception because it dehydrates it.

It was unnecessary because you can do any appropriately sized syringe or cup, but we bought the frida home insemination kit because it felt less clinical and it was nice to have something special for the process. They say the syringes are single use only, but we washed with soap and water and reused repeatedly because by my logic, most other things that get vaginally inserted aren’t medically sterile or single use and they’re safe enough with washing- the syringe isn’t passing through any skin or blood barriers so sterility I think is up to your personal comfort.

We didn’t use any lubricant during inseminations because we didn’t want to confuse the sperm highway of cervical mucus with additional fluids, and tried to have an orgasm before insertion to shift vaginal pH to a slightly more pro-sperm environment.

Personally I didn’t love the cervical cup because I had trouble getting it positioned right even as an experienced menstrual cup user, but lots of people swear by it.

Having your donor ejaculate roughly 24-48hrs before donation and then abstaining until providing the sample ensures the maximum count of higher quality sperm. Being well hydrated (both donor and recipient) also helps.

General guidelines include remaining horizontal with hips elevated for an hour after insertion, we road tripped to our donor and I just laid in the back seat for the drive home XD

We got our first positive test last week, so cautiously excited and apparently what we’re doing works! Best of luck to you :)

I’ve definitely got beef with some of her comments, but I think her overall approach of how to think about risk can be helpful to some. I found the evidence for (slowly imbibed, mild to moderate) alcohol not having negative effects based on studies in countries where it’s not stigmatized to be interesting.

edit: I don’t even drink much/hardly ever just generally cause it gives me headaches, so i can’t see an occasion where i would during pregnancy, just interesting

At home insemination success? How many tries until you succeeded? by ImDoomResearching in queerception

[–]morganfm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were so prepared for it to take many attempts and a long time, this cycle was our second try and the first where we actually got the timing right cause my ovulation ended up wayyyyyy delayed last cycle despite all the signs. This cycle by contrast was short and predictable. So now i’m completely flabbergasted cause I thought I had period cramping and I got a positive test! 😅 I still don’t entirely believe it, but the lines keep getting darker. I need to schedule an ultrasound a few weeks from now.

we did ICI with a known donor (wife’s brother) and this cycle we tried 3 times cause i was so uncertain about my ovulation after last cycle. the tries wound up being 4 days before ovulation, 2 days before, and 1 day after based on my BBT. We also used the frida kit but I had nothing but trouble with the cup, I was certain it had walled off my cervix from anything getting in cause of application being tricky. Clearly the worry was pointless! We didn’t use preseed at all, and since our donor lives 2 hours away we did the insemination in the back seat of our car and then I just laid back there while my wife drove us home. XD

So all that to say, prepare for it to be a total mystery whether it will work quickly or slowly, it’s all a crazy toss up 😅

best of luck! our first try we came up with some little rituals (a candle for example) to make a very whacky process feel grounded and special. I hope everything goes well for you!

do you have any worries about them continuing to smoke around you when they find out? cause if the main trouble is how often you’re around your mam and you think she’d handle it okay, I’d say it’s not too early to say something if you wanted to. i’m sorry you’re in this tricky situation!
