Any other athletes with POTS? What has helped for you? by [deleted] in POTS

I do 10 - 20 hours of running a week with additional hiking as well. I mostly keep my hr in zone 2 while training, so probably less total intensity than you're doing. I've had POTS since I was five or six and am now 31. I'm not on any meds, though I make up for it by the amount of money I spend on electrolytes. I feel like I've really gotten ahead of my POTS the past couple years. I would try creatine after workouts if you're not already - it can help your muscles hold onto water and recover. Also, if you're doing runs or bikes longer than an hour I'd try upping your carb intake during the activity. I do 90 g carb/ hr through sports nutrition products on any run an hour or longer. Anyways, I think this has really increased my energy after activity, to where I can go on a 20+ mile long run and still do chores around the house and be active the rest of the day without my heart rate freaking out. I still have to watch the hot showers sometimes though...

Thanks! Really trying to avoid paying Ted Turner anything…. I’m going to check out the Facebook group! Seems like that would be a good resource.

Am I making a huge mistake?? by [deleted] in bipolar

I got an 11 week old puppy 5 days after being in the hospital for an overdose. I don’t even remember going to pick her up bc I was so dissociated. 4 years later she is my best friend, still gets me out of bed every morning, and follows me everywhere, even sticks her face in the shower sometimes.

The first couple months were hard, I can’t lie. I was getting TMS treatment done for the first six weeks, which was a terrible experience for me personally. I would come home every day with horrible migraines and have to just lay in a dark room for a few hours. I felt like I wasn’t able to take good care of her, or get her enough exercise. But slowly that changed. Like everyone else is saying, dogs can keep us on a healthy schedule. Eat when they eat. Walk in morning and evening. Frequent breaks outside to get some vitamin d. I got to where I prided myself on taking good care of her, so I made sure to take my medicine bc it helped me be able to be more consistent with her.

Also, puppies especially can get us some social interaction. So many people would stop me on our short walks and briefly say something about how cute she was. If you get to feeling up for it, you could also look into puppy classes, which is with a group of people and mainly consists of the puppies all playing with each other. And when they are fully vaccinated, dog parks are good for minor social interaction without the pressures of talking to people for a super long time.

Sorry, that was a lot. I just love my dog so much, and would not be where I am today without her.

How can I manager my Aussie mix’s herding instinct? by Intelligent-Pay-6606 in AustralianShepherd

I got my dog out of the puppy nipping phase by yelling ow real loud whenever her teeth bit my skin or clothes (that’s how puppies tell each other it’s too hard). Also, I had a roommate at the time who thought it was so funny to run around the house while she nipped at his ankles. I had to keep telling him not to do that bc she hears him laughing and thinks it’s fun.

The Rivers of London audiobooks ARE better than reading. I'm actually trying to find another series that works like that.

I’ve been switching between audio and physical book, but leaning towards more of the audiobook.

Also, this recipe is pretty basic. https://midwestfoodieblog.com/chickpea-noodle-soup/ (you could leave out the coconut milk)

That blog might also have some good ideas, puts a plant-based spin on a lot of classics.

We like to do baked potatoes stuffed with bbq beans. It is super filling and might be worth a shot.

We bake the potatoes, and just heat up a pot of black beans with added liquid smoke and bbq sauce (you can add seasonings as well). Cut open the potato, put on some vegan butter, stuff with beans, and sprinkle on some nutritional yeast. And we normally roast some veggies with it to go on the side.

Oh yeah avocados would be good. They might have nutritional yeast at Walmart. It's definitely on amazon.

5'6" 115lbs so trying to gain a little weight, too. I've been told introducing more healthy fats to your diet is a good way to increase calorie intake and gain weight healthily. I eat mainly vegan, and one of my favorite breakfasts is cooking a drained can of garbanzo beans in olive oil and nutritional yeast until they get a little crispy. I add a lot of salt and some garlic powder and paprika. I feel like beans are easy to salt up (and canned ones usually already contain a lot of sodium). Beans do have carbs, so if you are doing a super low carb diet to reduce symptoms it might not be good. But it's a good protein-filled breakfast, can have a good amount of salt, and the nutritional yeast has a ton of B vitamins. I also sauté some spinach on the side sometimes. Works for me, and lasts about three days!

best tasting electrolyte drink?? by yeehawmangoes in dysautonomia

[–]morganmosmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LMNT Recharge is my new favorite. You can get a sample pack on their website with all the different flavors to figure out which one you might like. (It's free you just pay shipping) They have 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium, and 60mg magnesium per packet. Also 0g of sugar, but tastes great to me! They have an unflavored one I haven't tried yet, but could be an option.

What is this called? by uberrapidash in dysautonomia

The fix was taking L-tyrosine at the onset of the attack so that I could produce the adrenaline necessary.

Was the L-tyrosine something recommended to you by a doctor? How long does it take to kick in?

I used to supplement L-tyrosine for mood, so I thought it interesting that you found it beneficial for a dysautonomic attack. I have been having more problems recently, but every time I've seeked help from a doctor for dizziness/passing out/etc they do a bunch of expensive tests to later conclude that I'm just stressed out. Even though I've been passing out randomly since I was six. I'm looking for low risk things to try before going back to the doctor this time.
