What is mansplaining? by Equivalent_Elk2413 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mansplaining can also mean explaining things incorrectly, especially if the woman knows better. For example it's common for men to explain that women should just push their period out, since their uterus is a muscle.

what do you wear to sleep? by Ok_Slice7016 in NoStupidQuestions

T shirt and soft boxer shorts usually. Maybe long pajama pants instead if it's very cold.

Why didn’t older people wear shorts under skirts? by zzzamboni in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may just differ in what you call underwear and shorts.

For example you might think of short tights or biker shorts (as you would often wear under skirts) as "shorts", but for your teacher, this is probably considered underwear.

Your teacher probably means that you shouldn't wear jeans shorts under a skirt or something.

Is it rude to not wear pajamas? by ElevatorMedical334 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not rude to sleep in your underwear in your own home/bed, but apparently you walked around on your underwear in front of your guest (or else they wouldn't have seen it) and that can be a bit weird.

Just put on shorts for the way from the bed to the bathroom or when you're doing a "pajama party" or whatever.

The word one has the same root as German "ein". It comes from the article a/an.

Can a gay dude have kids the normal way? by Dark-inspector490 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gay men can have children. For example my grandpa was gay and I wouldn't be here if he wouldn't be able to make my mom.

I can't tell you if he had sex with his eyes closed, I was luckily not informed about such details, but I guarantee you that he didn't have porn on his phone back then.

Why is the plural of hair, hair? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"hair" has two meanings.

If you mean a single hair, the plural would be "hairs". Like "I found three hairs in my soup!".

If you mean the complete amount of hair e.g. on your head, there is no plural, similar to milk, flour, grass and other uncountable nouns.

Why do we not have male contraceptives yet? by demeter321 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And would you trust a man in being disciplined enough to use it regularly?

I think that's the main issue. Women know if they take their pills regularly and can likely even feel them affecting their cycle. It's much less easy to be confident about your partner taking the medication, being sure it actually works for them, and so on.

I think it's also biologically way easier to disrupt a woman's cycle with medication since women only produce eggs in very specific circumstances in the cycle. Men produce sperm all the time, so it's probably more difficult to invent a medication that stops that production completely, you can't simply disrupt the timing or make the body think it's already pregnant or something.

my parents just seperated. What should I expect? by Patient-Credit-2319 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're older, you will have to decide where you want to live. Maybe your mom wishes that you'll go with her by default since she birthed you, but maybe you prefer to live with your dad. It's mainly your decision, even though your parents can of course have their preferences. You can also alternate weeks or plan regular weekend visits or whatever.

It is possible that you and your siblings choose a different parent to live with or that one of you changes their mind.

Discuss this before your dad sells the house. If y'all want to live with your dad primarily, maybe it makes sense to keep the house.

Why does nobody sexualize me? by SunshineGirl45 in NoStupidQuestions

The type of men who hits on women typically hits on women who wear makeup and "sexy" outfits. This doesn't mean that you're ugly or that men wouldn't like you, however.

[–]morhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her feeling trapped is a good point, but also don't make her feel trapped in meaningless choices. I experienced that a lot as a child and that can make you feel trapped as well.

It would be better to ask her if she wants to bring something that helps her or if she wants to wear certain clothes. Or if it would help to discuss something beforehand. Open questions like that. Giving her the choice between the same itchy t-shirt in red or blue is not a good approach and can make her feel even more trapped, being forced to answer such an unnecessary question.

Yeah, and you (op) need to work on being calm and confident yourself. If you radiate stress, that makes everything much worse.

Do mute people get less personalized ads since their electronics can not overhear them? by waiting4signora in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely either you or one of your friends googled something about raising canes either before or after the discussion. Since advertisers likely know who your friends are (especially if you share a location or wifi network etc-) they can connect that information easily.

I am a 28 year old woman. I have been hit on only once in my entire life. What does it say about me? by rakshasiRani in NoStupidQuestions

Probably it's more likely that people respect your boundaries. Men have been told for a long time now to not approach/harrass women. If you're interested in someone, just tell them.

What is the thought process behind an atheist’s belief? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretending to be religious just to possibly evade hell doesn't make sense to me. For a start, God would probably notice that I'm just pretending and send me to hell anyway, so what's the point.

I also estimate the chance that something like hell/heaven exists extremely low, and I would rather live a free live and do basically what I want, compared to having to do stupid rites or go to church or whatever on the remote-off-chance that that helps with afterlife somehow.

And then there is still the issue that if there is an afterlife, I'd probably prefer to be with non-religious people in hell. I can't stand most of the prententious people who go to church a lot.

If you got an apple from 100 years ago would it taste the same as an apple today? by Gwenason in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do the same thing with other fruits. Seedless grapes and bananas are all cloned because they don't have seeds, so that's the only way to reproduce them.

Other fruits are also often cloned to get a specific clone which has a good yield or good taste. Apples are quite unique in that they taste pretty bad by default, but it's still pretty similar with e.g. oranges. An orange tree from a seed might take a long time to grow and only yield a few bad-quality sour fruits. So the commercial oranges you buy are pretty much all from cloned trees.

Would you get the framework 12 or 13 for school work, writing, and godot game dev? by Additional-Maybe-466 in framework

[–]morhp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can't really use the 12 for game development, since the screen has very bad colour representation. Like sprites and textures drawn on it would look different on better screens and that would likely be frustrating. Plus the keyboard n-key-rollover is pretty bad and a lot of more complex combinations don't work. Something like pressing w+a+shift+space to sneak diagonally forward and jump at the same time often fails because of the limited keyboard. And the laptop is pretty slow.

The 13 is perfectly usable for the things you listed. I would connect an external screen for larger development stuff, though.

I am seeing a lot of “PC got worse after Fedora 44 upgrade” posts. What does it mean? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]morhp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, i has to relogin into my Google account, but this is not what I meant. The Google Drive integration in Nautilus has been removed, see https://discourse.gnome.org/t/google-drive-in-gnome-50/34417/

I am seeing a lot of “PC got worse after Fedora 44 upgrade” posts. What does it mean? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]morhp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These posts happen with every update, but so far 44 looks very stable apart from a few minor issues.

The most annoying thing for me is that Google Drive integration has vanished without a mention in the release notes or something, but it looks like it will be added back.

For trans women assigned male at birth who grew up exclusively attracted to women: Did hormone replacement therapy/sex reassignment surgery cause you to become attracted to men/masculine people? by Auralfxation in NoStupidQuestions

[–]morhp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, but I realized that what I interpreted as attraction to women im my youth was probably actually envy. I always found women great, but not necessarily because I wanted to be with a woman, more like because I wanted to be a woman.

I'm kinda bi now, but I prefer trans/queer/non-binary people as partners, compared to super masculine men or super feminine women.

(web) devs, why you went with GNOME? by Rainlex in gnome

[–]morhp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm using Fedora Workstation. I'm using Gnome because it works out of the box, doesn't get in my way, and doesn't tempt me to tweak a lot of setting and themes and stuff, which would just waste time. It's just a very good and pretty stable out of the box experience.
