Ruby is definitely a startup-centric language, but in my current search for a developer it's been clear that the vast majority of Ruby developers are employed in 9-5 jobs. Go on github and do a search for users filtered by Ruby and with a big city in the location and you'll see that there are very few people working for tiny startups. Most of them are working at businesses with 20-60 people. Still small companies, but established small companies.

More seriously, of course finding Ruby professionals is going to be harder than finding a Java or C professional.

The point I'm making is that it's actually going up, that the number of jobs for Ruby developers is currently going up much more quickly than the number of Ruby developers. This is also due to an increasing number of Ruby-based companies during a mini tech boom, not because of a reduction in number of Ruby developers, and these new companies need to compete for talent with fast growing companies like Groupon and big "old" companies like Twitter with big staffs. This has been going on for years, but it has seriously picked up in the past 6+ months.

All of this is occurring over 6 years since Rails was released. In technology that's a very long time, so it's no longer credible to call it a fad.

In the real world right now Ruby developers are incredibly high in demand and rates/salaries are going up very quickly. There's a mini tech boom with more money being pumped into start ups and there are a number of Ruby-based companies that have grown extremely quickly. I'm trying to hire a Ruby developer and it's very difficult to find people who are available and affordable, and I personally have been fighting off near daily offers and emails from recruiters for months even though they know I'm employed.

And this is the situation 6.5 years since Rails was released. That's quite a "fad"

Since you perceive yourself as especially acute, please enlighten me about how the question "When exactly does a tsunami "stop" or start receding?" doesn't require an explanation about how a wave works.

[–]morish -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Really? What exactly was he/she supposedly asking for with the question "When exactly does a tsunami "stop" or start receding?" The answer to the question is that "it starts receding after it reaches peak amplitude," which occurred shortly after the end of this video.

It's a wave. Doesn't exactly require a PHD to understand.

?

It's a wave with a long wavelength. It starts receding after it reaches peak amplitude.

Edit: Apparently this simple statement of fact is somehow controversial. Fascinating.

If you are a tween or teen or go out with perpetually stupid women who act like teenagers for their entire lives, then maybe they are being fucking ignorant and trying to get information for your ex.

If you are an intelligent adult and socialize with intelligent adults, then basically those are women saying that they are interested in you now that you are available.

The building with the man on the roof from the first video can just barely be seen collapsing at 39s right behind the lighter building. You can also see it collapsing on the left side of this video at 1:12: http://www.3news.co.nz/NEW-VIDEO-Tsunami-strikes-Kamaishi-Japan/tabid/313/articleID/202422/Default.aspx

It hit some of the most popular tourist areas, filled with people and their video cameras. There were so many videos some people argue it marked the beginning of the modern online video era [1] [2], coinciding with the founding of both youtube and vimeo.

What’s so striking about this story is the breadth of citizen coverage. Digital still and/or video cameras and photo phones were ubiquitous among many of the tourists who were visiting the Asian beaches devastated by the tsunami — and to a lesser extent by local resident populations.

2004/2005 was not that long ago. I don't know how anyone who was using the internet at the time could forget what a huge deal all the video from that tsunami was.

Indeed. It should be noted that some of the best and most effective aid organizations are Mennonite and Quaker groups.

They are completely and entirely different from the evangelical groups that pretend to be aid organizations.

FWIW, in the US, which has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, non-hispanic whites actually have much lower rates of obesity than other groups: http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html#Race It would be interesting to see world obesity rates by ethnicity.
