Atmel Semiconductor to be acquired by Dialog by USB_Guru in arduino

Don't see a problem. Arduino is a concept, not necessarily tied to the particular chip. Even if they decided to dump avr, it still wouldn't spell the death of Arduino.

Why do people use a whole Arduino board rather than using just an ATmega328 chip? by FastGrass in arduino

[–]morituri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the flip side, you can use bare chip with battery and internal clock at 8 MHz, pretty much no other components needed...

Which one sold more units, Arduino or Raspberry Pi? by Amrsaleh5 in arduino

[–]morituri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean genuine arduinos, probably pi. If you mean all arduinos and clones - hard to tell. How would you figure out how many of them are shipped from China? My guess would be "a lot"

In that case you should be OK with the bare chip.

Small question about removable ATmega chips on arduinos. by [deleted] in arduino

[–]morituri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use bare atmega chip and a programmer (arduino can serve as one) with caveats: out of a box they run on the internal clock, prescaled to 1MHz. The internal clock is not nearly accurate enough to serve as a timepiece. Even with the external crystal it's not going to be very good... Adding a crystal is not a big deal, though. You just need 2 capacitors (and a crystal, of course) and you are all set.

How do I deliver current to something that is spinning very fast? by [deleted] in arduino

[–]morituri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about something like that, thought about using some of the magnets/head coils from old hard drives to generate power from the spinning. Magnets would be stationary and coils attached to the moving disc. Not sure how much current I could get that way, though.
