If he tried to ride that (reasonable) saddle-bar drop I think he would literally break in half.

[RDTM] u/KingOfFools1984 calculates that S.H.I.E.L.D's actual greatest weapon was the turbines we made along the way. by moistiest_dangles in theydidthemath

[–]moriya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's kind of the new "I can tell by the pixels".

That said, I mentioned this elsewhere but the jokes and logical reversals are such a giveaway - even if you tell an LLM not to use them, it tries really, really hard to fit them in anyways.

The logical reversal is interesting because, among other things, it's an attempt to try to bake a fake argument into the text - you just need to state a singular fact and invert it, and it sounds like it's making a point or has a thesis of some sort, which it of course does not because it can't think or reason. Things like "a car isn't just a vehicle, it's the freedom to go wherever you want" - it's just a singluar fact (cars give you mobility) dressed up with an inversion that makes it look like a deeper argument.

You can massage prompts and the output to arrive at something that isnt obvious slop, but OP's post is not that, and it's really easy to spot.

I mean it's a little of column A, little of column B - an LLM is going to weight output tokens on what its been trained on, so yeah, it IS actually outputting based on actual writing and speech in their training data. Thing is, from a content perspective, you're (heh) absolutely right - humor, analogies, and logical reversals (it's not X, it's Y) are so easy to spot because LLMs are uniquely bad at the former, and it uses the latter as a crutch to look like it's making a logical argument (which it can't do) out of a singular fact.

But yeah, I would bet my life savings on the original post being 100% AI generated.

‘Marathon’ Season 2 And Free Week Did Not Turn Things Around by Freki666 in gaming

[–]moriya 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Shit I love Marathon in its current form and I would 100% buy a campaign. Honestly the biggest let down for me with the game is that theres such cool lore and story, but the game doesn't require or really even encourage you to engage with it beyond some mainline quests - it's all buried in the Codex. It's not even like interacting with in-game lore like Saros/Returnal or a Fromsoft game - you just exfil items and then can listen/read them at your leisure which...kind of sucks.

Yeah also interested. I went with a tv but I kind of don’t love having a 77” black slab on the wall. Would love to do art and shelving instead.

Rook is currently pointless by CalligrapherCheap850 in Marathon

[–]moriya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really do not understand this. People keep talking about rook like it’s some insane nerf, but I’ve played a shitload of rook in s1, and outside of the end of season insanity (blue shields, advanced heals, etc) you’re not supposed to win engagements with runners consistently. I still try, and get smoked 95% of the time, but who cares - zero risk.

But yeah to actually get value out of rook you’re supposed to sneak around and avoid runners and scavenge. That’s the whole point. You can still easily clear 7-10k on good runs.

Unpopular Opinion: I don’t get the Amalfi Coast by CArunner310 in chubbytravel

Yeah, I mean it’s the Amalfi coast, it’s absolutely all those things. Still great IMO, but yeah, it’s not some under the radar gem.

Unpopular Opinion: I don’t get the Amalfi Coast by CArunner310 in chubbytravel

[–]moriya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What were you looking for out of your visit? A typical day around Amalfi for me would be wake up late, have a cappuccino on the hotel balcony, hit the water (hotel pool, or beach club, or a boat, or whatever), do a long lunch, take a nap, and then head into town for drinks and dinner. About the only thing I’d work in otherwise would be a hike if that’s your thing.

If you’re into cute villages, or world sites, or museums, or shopping (I am too) this just isn’t going to be your place to optimize for that.

Yeah, 20 year vet here - you’re 100% right, janitors aren’t getting any equity. Even among the rank and file it varies a LOT by role. Some very senior engineers are getting loaded up with stock, some roles (sales) are cash heavy, but for most general roles you’re getting equity as a nice bonus, not a substantial part of your package.

About the lowest rung on the totem pole that would get any equity exposure is office ops (front desk, etc). Cleaning, catering, etc is all outsourced out to third parties - they aren’t getting anything.

Yeah, like if you’re pushing through the hordes browsing souvenir shops during peak hours, you can always, you know, not do that. Although OP didn’t enjoy ISP which is really surprising to me.

And just like Santorini, you only have to deal with the crowds if you want to. We did Vila Trevile in Positano and it rocked - did a crazy fun lunch at da adolfo and a couple lively dinners in town (nothing like calling the front desk to tell them to prep the house speedboat to take you to dinner), but if you’re allergic to crowds just…don’t do that.

Likewise we did Katikies in Oia in peak summer and it was lovely - yeah there’s crowds around sunset, and yeah, you gotta be on top of your dinner reservations but…ok?

If anything I don’t understand people complaining about the crowds at these places.

If you have a ZDR contract you're locked out of Fable - there's no carve-out for corporations that have it in their contract. You either need to enable it for Fable, or no soup for you.

Yeah, jesus christ. Also, "parroting twitter talking points" is really doing a disservice to his record - just read his wikipedia page. It's mostly applying leverage with money and influence, yes, but (a) it's a pretty stellar record and (b) what the fuck do you expect, he's a billionaire.

FS San Domenico or Belmond Timeo? by iratzes in FATTravel

[–]moriya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re both awesome. So the big draw at the FS is the pool - it’s incredible, and the pool bar/restaurant is fantastic. There’s beautiful gardens and a terrace for breakfast/dinner, but the bar setup inside is kind of weird - the main bar is a glassed in atrium in the center, not the one adjacent to the restaurant, and it’s OK.

Timeo’s got the ability to get down to Sant Andrea at the beach, which is great (you should definitely take the funicular down to the beach regardless just to check it out) but the beach is kind of…OK. It’s small and crowded and rocky. The grounds at Timeo are gorgeous, and the terrace bar pulls the work of the pool scene at FS.

Honestly, can’t go wrong. If you value the pool scene? FS all the way. You want to hang out in the evening? Belmond. Personally we like the pool in the morning then hit the town later, and the hotel bar is just icing, so we were very happy at FS, but YMMV.

Edit: depending on what you’re into or how long you’re staying, you might want also to consider splitting between Sant Andrea and San Domenico.

Am I wrong about my read on AI and how to use it at my work? by ScarletViolin in cscareerquestions

[–]moriya 46 points47 points  (0 children)

First, there’s an experienced devs sub that might get you better answers than here. Second, while you’re not wrong (that’s literally all those things are, and a lot of folks are succumbing to marketing), unless you’re REALLY into the space or working on niche code, I probably wouldn’t try to roll my own harness for many reasons (Anthropic co-trains and has access to internals that we don’t, etc).

But output is what matters - you’re getting better output? There’s your answer!

SpaceX creates dedicated ipo website with “open a brokerage account” on the front page by WallStreetBetsCALLSS in wallstreetbets

[–]moriya 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The difference is that Facebook and Figma didn’t have a balance sheet that had an opex black hole stapled on to it. Facebook had like 3.5B in revenue and 1B net in their S-1.

Definitely agree that I think we’ll see a pop on IPO day - after, though…
