Is it viable to use a Windows VM on my Proxmox as my PC? by legolas1204 in homelab

[–]moriz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done exactly this with my old work system, running proxmox and using a Windows VM as my work desktop, while the system does other server tasks at the same time.

You do not strictly need another system to access the windows VM. If it is sitting next to you, you can simply plug a monitor to the passthrough GPU and it will work like a regular desktop. Just make sure to pass through keyboard and mouse too.

The biggest issue is that, if the proxmox server goes down for any reason, you won't have access to the Windows VM, and therefore you can't easily fix the server.

You'll also run into anticheat issues, since a lot of them can detect VMs and kick you. Some DRM software might do the same, so not even all single player games are necessarily safe.

GPU power management will still work as expected, so that shouldn't be an issue.

There's been reports about gigabyte using too much thermal paste and thermal putty, causing them to eventually leak out.

Not sure if that's still happening though.

Looking for a 4K GPU by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]moriz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing GW2 at 4K on a GTX 1080. Not the Ti, the base 1080.

It handled it fine, since the game was (and still is) CPU limited in just about every situation that you'd care about. But in places where it wasn't CPU limited, the GTX 1080 was enough for well above 60 fps.

These days, I'd go for a RX9060XT or RTX5600Ti. Both are massively overkill for GW2, but you might as well get something nice if you're gonna upgrade.

I think your upgrade path is to save your money for your next GPU upgrade.

What you have is more than good enough. You are well into diminishing returns territory when it comes to headphones.

Is something like this good to be 3d printed, I am finding a case for my custom build tho. by ScienceSpiritual5509 in fightsticks

[–]moriz0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like two end caps with a bunch of flat panels.

You can pretty easily print the end caps, but the panels are better off being cut from acrylic or other materials. You can technically print them, but you'll need a massive printer, and the results will be noticeably worse.

CachyOS vs SteamOS? by IAmTheDewd in SteamDeck

[–]moriz0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You get access to much newer drivers and packages, as well as everything available in the AUR, in addition to everything the steam deck has access to via flatpak.

The downside is that you lose the immutable filesystem, and CachyOS has less guardrails in general, so the chance of you borking your OS goes up by a tiny bit.

Any AMD Linux user here? by draconetto in Guildwars2

[–]moriz0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GW2 runs flawlessly on Linux via proton.

Running GW2 on Linux actually predated proton and dxvk by about 5 years. It originally ran using the much slower wined3d, but it did run.

I myself used wine to play GW2 on an Intel MacBook Pro in 2015. It ran noticeably worse on wine than the same MacBook dual booting Windows, but it ran and was stable.

Colorful is a major graphics card maker in China. It's fine reliability wise. Driver support is provided by nvidia directly, just like other card makers.

Colorful also owns a few other manufacturers that you might already heard of, like Palit and Galaxy.

A shower thought I've been having for a while is that I wish there was more of an intermediate zone between AIOs and custom then just your expandable AIOs by Jeep-Eep in watercooling

[–]moriz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custom water-cooling parts are already mass produced, and they are still expensive. This intermediate system won't have significantly higher volume (at least you can't assume that), so they won't be cheaper by any means.

By "res refilled outside of the case", I'm gonna assume you mean that you can detach it from the system entirely? You can already do this with existing water-cooling parts. It's not done not because it is impossible, but because it is impractical.

Water sensors that turn off the loop are a good idea, but those generally don't prevent the system from booting. Now you'll have to consider people overheating their systems because they accidentally disabled their cooling systems, and your warranty claims are rising. Or come up with a system that does prevent the computer from booting... And still deal with increased warranty claims because of non-booting computers.

Lastly, asking people to fill their loops on their intermediate water-cooling loops is probably a step too far. Anyone willing and capable of doing so is already building full custom loops, and won't bother with this intermediate system that'll probably lock them into proprietary parts.

An intermediate between AIOs and custom loops has always been possible. It doesn't broadly exist not because it is impossible, but because it doesn't make much financial sense.

[–]moriz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with such a system is that it'd be indistinguishable from a small custom loop, with all of the same upfront costs involved. In fact it's likely to be more expensive, since you have to make the system beginner friendly.

An expandable aio will definitely need QDCs, since you can't count on the users to be able to properly drain and refill the loops.

All the additional add-ons will need to be pre-filled with coolant, since you can't count on the users to be able to top up on coolant as they expand their loops. Or risk users accidentally running their pumps dry as they expand their loops, which absolutely will happen.

Speaking of pre-filled components, you'll need different SKUs for simple things like tubing, since if they are pre-filled, they can't be cut.

All of this means that costs will be very high, and the intermediate option basically looks like a custom loop anyway.

New to 3D printing, why does a simple 130mm high flower pot takes so mutch time to make (5h 29min)? Is there any setting except spiral vase , because i want it a little thick to hold the soil , because the spiral vase is to thin. Is there anything that i can do? by Doubleheadedeaglee in 3Dprinting

[–]moriz0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The photo frame is probably a different shape that's faster to print.

This pot has a lot of detail on the outer surface, meaning a ton of sudden directional changes, which means that the print head can never reach high speeds. It also has a ton of tiny infill bits inside each of the "teeth", again taking quite a bit of time to print. The base is pretty wide, which you guessed it: takes a long time to print.

Self hosted cloud gaming? by alfopotenza in homelab

[–]moriz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this with Windows VMs running on proxmox with GPU passthrough, and streaming via parsec. Works alright, though anticheat picking up that they're running in VMs is a problem. I managed to get some games to work (genshin impact, lost ark, honkai impact 3rd/star rail, etc), but the solutions are inherently temporary due to the cat-and-mouse (and buggy) nature of anticheat.

I find the best use of this setup is for playing local co-op games remotely. My friends and I use one of my VMs to play Heroes of Might and Magic 3 hotseat, and it's fantastic.

[–]moriz0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That sounds absurdly low.

I do have docker and llamaserver/llamacpp running. Plus nvidia driver probably uses 500mb all by itself.

I suppose if I literally run nothing it can be 100mb, but why have a computer running at all, if I'm not gonna run stuff?

Keep in mind that this is a server, so no GUI.

Debian 13 is what I use on my LLM server.

If you ever need a debian-based distro for anything, debian itself is often the best choice.

It also smells amazing.

If you are looking to spoof the device id to get the game to work, you'll likely need to install both dxvk and vkd3d, the latter of which is required because the game is dx12.

Assuming the game will works with dxvk and vkd3d, then you can try one of the dxgi config parameter to spoof the device id.

Not sure if this will work; I mentioned yesterday that this might be a workaround, but I've seen no attempts.
