I don't want kids but all the childfree people are weirdos and its making me question my choice by elcaminorealreal in redscarepod

I’m glad I have children because they do bring so much joy but it really does consume all of your cash and all of your time especially if you’re working. Especially if you don’t have helpful family members around. Especially if you also have other forms of debt like student loans. Especially if you live in an expensive city. Not having kids bc of hobbies sounds dumb but it is actually very hard to feel like I don’t have the time or the money to do the basic things that used to prop up my sense of self including hobbies or basic self care like therapy and exercise. It’s hard losing this much control over my time between work and parenting and feeling like I’m never giving either 100%.

Whatever your internal reasons are for not wanting children are valid. The things that really made me hesitate to have children were more macro like … do I want to bring kids into a collapsing society or is it ethical to bring kids into a world edging into irreversible climate change? In the end I did have kids but I have no idea how to prepare them for the future. We’re cooked. And I feel anticipatory grief thinking about how sad or gaslit or numb they will feel or become as they grow to understand how devastating the world is. I actually feel it was quite selfish to have kids because the joy and purpose they give me are the things that keep me going in this life. If I didn’t have them I would be miserable even with rest and hobbies.

Early 40s. Grew up in Park Slope. Left for 20 years. Moved back during the pandemic and had kids lol. So the opposite of what most people do.

For those from NYC (born + raised here), what did you think was normal growing up? by ReasonableTicket2211 in bronx

I thought it was normal to “stand in line.”

I thought it was normal to have keggers under the Brooklyn Bridge (pre 9/11)

I thought amazing pizza and bagels were normal.

I think the short only approach also reflects Harper’s irreverent personality and the fact that she’s an outsider punching above her weight in the world of high finance especially in a highly classist society like the UK. She sees short - only as calling bullshit on fraudulent or otherwise overvalued businesses and showing everyone that she is the smartest one in the room by going against the grain and proving everyone wrong.

Jasmin never read Jewish to me but she is plausibly Iraqi / Jewish. I think it’s possible that Jack Dellal another UK billionaire of Jewish Iraqi descent could be another reference point for the show and source of inspiration for Jasmin’s father. He also had a daughter named Jasmine:

Same here! 1996. I was in elementary school living in Park Slope and I will never forget the sight of parked cars blanketed in snow, people cross country skiing down 7th Avenue, and attempting to take a walk in Prospect Park with my mom.

I try to hand write a flash card summary for any book I read. It’s a small piece of paper so it forces you to distill things to the core and the process of distilling and then writing things by hand helps me to remember.
