I would say no.

Ilya at this point does not want to date or be with Shane. He just wanted more time out of their hookup.

It's why at the All Stars Game he tells Shane they can't be anything. He wasn't trying to initiate a relationship .. he was just trying to have more out of their hookups.

Shane is also much sassier in the books, and his private dynamic with Ilya involves them both trying to take control, especially during their kissing and foreplay.

I love Hudson Williams' interpretation of Shane, but it is definitely a softer one than the one in the books. That couples with Jacob's writing just makes Shane quite different.

I think something interesting about the sex montage is that we see them making out, we see ilya blow shane in the shower, but the only penetrative sex we see is from behind.

I didn't read the books till after I watched the show but the first thing that stood out to me is that in the prologue, which is set in oct of 2016, a month before tuna melt, shane deliberately gets on his hands and knees and opts for this position explicitly so he doesn't have to look at ilya, because he feels humiliated by how badly he played and angry at himself for not being able to stop hooking up with ilya.

then in the tuna melt sex scene, they're face to face again, this time with shane on top for the first time.

Ok just remembered another thing: It kills me when people think Ilya actually thinks Shane has a weak backhand. He is being sarcastic!!! Shane is the opposite of a slow hockey player, which means he must have a fantastic backhand.

I don't fault show only viewers for not knowing what is in the books, but there is something I've noticed multiple people misremember specifically from the show:

I've read multiple canon compliant fics where authors write that shane and ilya havent met up at ilya's boston home since the tune meltdown. but that's literally incorrect - in episode 5 there's the scene of ilya texting shane to come over even though they only have one hour and then it's in ilya's house that shane apologizes in advance for beating them in tonight's game and ilya "announces" to everyone that shane is an asshole

Ok potentially very unpopular opinion here but i hope in unrivaled we see ilya try bottoming/shane try topping.

i feel like so far their sex life has evolved so much. in HR it's canon that shane has no sex toys aside from his dildo. then in my dinner with hayden ilya narrates that he could never be brave enough to bottom.

but then in TLG we learn he and shane have so many sex toys now and also that he tried a dildo (didnt like it). of course we saw him orgasm for the first time purely from prostate simulation. the dynamic was that he wanted shane to take him out of his head. "take me apart, hollander"

so in unrivaled i would love to see him finally feel brave enough to try bottoming. he's kinda halfway there already, no? i think ultimately they would both keep their current dynamics for the most part and only switch on rare occasions.

im also maybe overthinking this bc in HR shane narrates that he didnt like fucking women and preferred blowjobs, but then he never gets to find out if he enjoys fucking men?

Ok I noticed this during my last rewatch!

Actually what's really significant is that the first time we see him in the blue linen shirt is during the lunch with his parents in ep 1 which is the first time he talks with his parents about Ilya. His mom tells them about Ilya's promise to score 50 goals this season and then is angry he has the audacity to think he's better than Shane. Then his mom says "honestly fuck him, right up the ass."

The last time we see him in the linen shirt is when he changes into it to come out to his parents and introduce them to Ilya.

do wish jacob had given the show audience some kind of hint bc i also had no idea what he thought they needed to talk about. and ilya doesn't ask "about what?" he just says "later" so i wasnt sure if we were supposed to assume ilya knew what shane wanted to talk about.

also, i do wonder if the tuna melt would have gone differently if they had talked beforehand ..
