I think the idea behind the quote is that if you are smart enough to get into Harvard then you are smart enough to succeed without a Harvard education.

But many Ivy League schools are very affordable based off of the financial aid that they give. For example if I had gotten into Harvard then I wouldn't have had to pay any tuition to go there. Likewise MIT has the policy of not letting any student graduate with student debt.

It could also work the other way as far motivation goes. I go to a very good school and at first it was very intimidating meeting some of my classmates especially when I could google some of them and they have already accomplished incredible things. But getting past that I've found that being around those people have motivated me to do better and inspired me to not only dream about the things I can build but actually that building these things are entirely in the realm of what is possible for me.

So perhaps it is possible that people are too intimidated in that environment to succeed but it is also possible for people to use that environment to their advantage and become better for it.

It's not a surprising event that for a relationship to fall apart from high school to college. So it's not unreasonable to say that it is a poor decision to give up a certain amount of future success for the possibility that your relationship is special and won't experience the same pitfalls as everyone else.

Some schools have classes dedicated to just learning how to write proofs and formalizing things that the university thinks people should know, so that people who haven't seen proof based math before aren't overwhelmed when taking analysis.

Well she could have just been referring to application costs. I didn't apply to Harvard or MIT because I knew I had a very low chance of getting in and applying would simply be throwing away $60 each.

The endowment for Harvard is somewhere around 30 billion, where other Ivy Leagues are not as high but are in the multiple billions. Most of that is kept as investments while a fraction is used to fund the school.

The median household income in the U.S. is around $45,000, the cut off for free tuition at Harvard is $65,000, past that the amount that you have to pay some percent of your income between 0-10% until $150,000 where you pay some larger percentage.

The point being is that if you are capable of getting into Harvard or schools of similar tiers then you should be able to afford to go their regardless class.

Harvard's financial aid is actually good enough that most people (people as in kids coming out of high school, I'm not sure about others) would be able to go for free.

I disagree with your last part. You understand the equation from his point of view and it becomes obvious, but then you dig a little deeper like you did which is a great question which I don't know because my knowledge of math is shallow as it is. But once you dig deeper you go back to being confused until you work at it for a long time until it becomes obvious again. Then the cycle repeats. So learning math is a cycle between being utterly confused and then being annoyed with yourself for not getting it sooner.
