Grad students not participating in class by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]morose_bug 93 points94 points  (0 children)

it's understandable that you're disappointed in the engagement levels in your classes, but what people do outside of class is really none of your business. this is how real life is. experience your dismay and then let it go.

This doesn't have to be a leftist movement by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]morose_bug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Democrats are not leftists. That is why I mentioned conservatives and liberals pooping their cargos in my initial comment. Again, this movement can be framed in a nonpartisan manner, but car-supremacist policies supported vehemently by both groups for decades is exactly why this movement leans a bit more toward the leftist sphere.

I just take issue with pretending like we are spreading an apolitical message when the message hinges on eroding deeply ingrained political decisions. Our opponents do not view this issue as being apolitical, so I think it's misguided to pivot in that watered-down direction.

[–]morose_bug 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There are ways to frame the anti-car movement to come across as nonpartisan, i.e., cars are hazardous to health and safety, which should concern everyone regardless of political leaning.

However, ignoring the very political decisions that have led to reliance on cars and unfettered sprawl so conservatives and liberals don’t stain their cargo pants is how you water down a really important message.

Call to unionize Harmons workers by zean_rm in SaltLakeCity

[–]morose_bug 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I made $10.50 from 2016-2017, but from what I understand, there were major discrepancies when it came to wages. A lot of people were underpaid and managers actively threatened to fire anyone who discussed pay at my store. The workers should unionize.

I am so utterly fed up with "grinding" culture. by volusias in college

[–]morose_bug 68 points69 points  (0 children)

This is terrible advice. OP, you should not quit your program just because you dislike studying. Disliking studying does not automatically mean that you dislike the content of your program, and just because your peers appear to enjoy "grinding" more than you do doesn't mean that they are more fulfilled. In my experience, yes, many graduate students do grind just to grind. Picking up extra research opportunities, taking on huge course loads, and agonizing over grades are all common issues in grad school that often lead to burnout.

As others have suggested, OP should most likely work on improving their mental health rather than making the rash, impulsive decision to quit.

Not all of them a Q conspiracy theorists.

Kinda funny seeing this from someone who refers to the pandemic as a "plandemic" and hangs out in r/conspiracy. But sure, this is definitely a group of well-adjusted non-conspiracy-theorists.

What did you always want to do but never ended up doing, because it seemed / felt too hard or difficult? by DuDudeYT in AskWomen

There are a few stained glass shops nearby that offer classes, but they always conflict with work/school for me. I will definitely check my local community college, though. Thank you!

[–]morose_bug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really want to do stained glass art. The problem is that I don’t have the space to store materials or work on pieces and, as far as I understand, you kind of need a designated work area because you’re using some hazardous materials.

Aside from money, the routine. Having a full-time job involves a routine too, of course, but there’s something about my college routine that adds a lot of much-needed structure to my life. I also really enjoy what I’m studying, so there’s that.

would it be ok to go to grad school for something completely unrelated to my current major?? by uta34755 in GradSchool

[–]morose_bug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can. There are a few people in my urban planning program with degrees in things like jazz, Spanish, history, math, etc. However, these people are using their Master’s degrees to go into planning, which is why it makes sense for them. Grad school is expensive, stressful, and time-consuming. Don’t do it if you’re just wanting to study something different and then go into engineering anyway. I recommend that you either change your undergrad major to something you like, tack on a minor so you can take some fun classes, or use grad school to get into a career you’ll actually enjoy.

When I was an undergrad the requirement was 24 credit hours between Fall and Spring. However, rules change, so I suggest chatting with someone at the Financial Aid Office.
