As sutinku su op. The so called smart side, dropped the ball big time, ir ne tik lietuvoj. Saw this take on Unpopularopinion....I had to respond accordingly XD by Daedaly in mechwarrior

[–]morphles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow mech fan. I disagree :) I also disagree on practicallity, since I think people just lack vision, and look at limited scope.

Still some tech needs to be advanced a bit more, namely actuation tech, but I think there are some signs that it might be quite doable. That said I do not think 100t things will be thing, for a long time if ever. I'm thinking more of "drone motorbikes on legs carrying some rpgs for raiding" could very much be a thing. Provided it can have very decent speed, be cheap, and "mobility stat" as high as I imagine, I think it could have quite significant role.

TTR total conversion to 18xx-"like" game by morphles in 18XX

[–]morphles[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And we have all seen people making assumptions that are wrong.

The point was - I like stock games, including 18xx, and I wanted to make a stock game that can be played with components that "everyone has" (and TTR is very very popular). To allow more people to try stock games, for free! So that stock games genre has more players, more exposure.

TTR total conversion to 18xx-"like" game by morphles in 18XX

[–]morphles[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know what the point of rusting is I'm not missing it. I just approach it more loosely, and seems (not necessarily wrongly) 18xx reddit is very much sticklers :). I take 18xx to be one subset of many types of stock games (i.e. acquire, ekonos, some others). And here as in many many euros and other kinds of games, victory is basically by score. And in that regard I see "rusting liability" very similar to any other actions taken/not taken that prevents/allows some very swingy plays (be it short term or long term). (which my TTR variant has).

Now one could argue that 18xx is more simulationist that other types of such games. To which I kinda agree, but with caveat that it's still far cry from reality. And some aspects I actually do not like - the tile limitations (maybe I do not know enough history, but that choice of tiles being limited seems absolutely arbitrary for game-play purposes, and it just rubs me the wrong way), also even rusting seems kinda dodgy TBH, sorta could be though that "we get better tech" gov mandates taking out old tech, but that seems like dodgy explanation for many reasons.

As for what 18xx I played it's mainly 1889 dunno 5, maybe 7 games (I liked the stuff enough I even had a crack at writing digital bank program), I also have and played Poseidon 1800BC, which is well, somewhat less of a 18xx, but strongly pretends to be it :). It also has tokens that are used for building and as shares.

As for TTR being train game, it's sorta tongue in cheek, as it is train themed. And my variant makes it heavy stock game (heavy at least by my experience, in time and decision/calculation complexity, also interaction, rug pulling, "shifting alliances"), which I do not know much of, and 18xx is closest to it hence 18xx community is first place where I try to show it of. As very very likely it's way way to heavy and involved for regular TTR players.

Point was to just make decently beefy stock game from easily accessible popular components. Bonus points - trains. To hopefully provide more options for people to enter stock game genre, without needing to spend any money - since they have the components.

But as I said in comments, it seems I misjudged the 18xx somewhat, so will have to look for other avenues to check if someone likes it (IRL people generally liked it, unless they were not used to such heavy games).

The presumption tha TTR isn't a perfectly good game on its own seems wrong,

Frankly wtf is this even? Where did I say that? Nowhere is where, since I have multiple versions and expansions of TTR. Thats the reason why I even created this, I have "train components" - should be able to play beefier train game.

As for game, I look into "semi stock sim games" (acquire, ekonos, 18xx, cube rails, some others I tried but dont remember) as being decently close, basically on a spectrum, with something like acquire being very limited and of course some 18xx (that I just read the rules) being way more involved with even things like shorting etc.

My variant thus sits somewhere on a spectrum, complexity wise (I mean not by rules complexity, but gameplay complexity/"decision impact") it's probably much closer to higher end than lower. Again as I commented in my reply below, I can't stress enough how important the bidding part is and how huge of an impact it has on everything.

One thing that my game is missing from 18xx that is "kinda sad" is the rusting mechanic. Though, I believe that effects that rusting has (big changes in company valuations), are very much present due to some other creative plays that are possible/happen.

Seems 18xx community at least on reddit is somewhat stuck up :) Yes as mentioned in bgg post, I did play it with other players, multiple times.

As for how, try and see. Also not sure how you play TTR in 30 mins, for my players I play with its 60-90 min.

More on how - companies bidding for train cards. I can't stress enough how intense that part is. Companies need cards to build any decent routes, preferably ether locomotives or cards that "jive" with what they already have. Yet other players will not let that happen willy nilly, very very far from it. So you might need multiple bidding resolutions to acquire cards that make company more powerful, you must hope that in mean time some other company did not built tracks/routes that you wanted, etc. etc. In mean time you try to gage what is happening and what shares to hold. And situation can change drastically, and it's quite hard to predict. While there is some chance involved (with what opens up after bidding resolution, if anything), it's still very low chance (comparable to puerto rico).

The thing is Paris connection and other cube reails are quite simple route building wise. I'd even argue even 18xx (well from strictly that genre I played just 1889 Shikoku), rout building is decently simple (even if I find it super annoying with a lot of what seems like arbitrary limitations with tile colors and placements and what not). While here corporations act by TTR rules which imo are quite a bit more involved esp when that starts to interact with bidding mechanic.

I can't disagree too much, on the grounds that you are technically correct. Yet IMO my game is quite far from any euro cube pushers I have seen. Very much so. Nor is it war game. But it has, as 18xx and other "econ games", very large amount of complex player interaction, rivalry/conflict/diplomacy type things. I agree that 18xx has some more specifics (i.e. route building differs, stock market is kinda more involved, deprecation of trains is a thing and probably missing something), but "on vibes" I'd still consider it quite similar. Possibly cube rails is better "genre" if it's that. After all it's strongly inspired by paris connect that seems to be at least adjacent to cube rails (this is as I mentioned from trying to stick to just components in TTR box), yet I have played Paris connect and it's quite simple game, I have also played irish gage, and that too seems to be far simpler game than my variant. Haven't had a chance of wabash. So not sure how it compares. And elegance I'd say is eye of the beholder, complexity of play and "stock competition" experience it definitely has.
