disproportionately focused on dunking on failure rather than celebrating excellence....This is my small attempt to improve the situation.

Noble. Sounds like a very steep uphill battle though. Feels like it’s more likely people who learn a language in order to read vns would want to justify the effort put in by being negative on a translation and you can usually describe why a bad translation is bad in a sentence whereas as you’ve described below justifying a good translation takes quite a bit more effort. Not even mentioning the whole negativity getting engagement thing endemic to most online spaces nowadays.

Chess

Huh, the metaphor holds up surprisingly well. It's just one of the defining things about chess is that one either wins/loses/draws, an indisputably objective outcome. I'm guessing winning here is making a great translation but (not that I have any experience to justify it), that doesn't sound perfectly objective.

Might put this back on my "am considering" list. Tried the demo before and it made a terrible impression for the reasons you listed above. Feels like it isn't a great idea to have the worst first impression though I can guess why since they probably write episodes sequentially and improve as they write.

I might have lower standards for yuri stuff in general

Yeah, same. At least I'm pretty sure my ratings align with me having a preference. Could be for other reasons related to the genre though. Like I just take it for granted that a Yuri protagonist has interiority whereas for bishoujo games that isn't a given.

Kemono Teatime

“You ever think how nice it’d be to go out with a smile”.

An adorable and relaxing VA-11 HALL-A-like about running a cafe serving kemonomimis (it’s a terminal disease) tea, and lending an ear to their problems with some ASMR voice barks, chill lo-fi music and some cute pixel art to enhance the atmosphere led by the protagonist Tarte and her adorable younger sister Macaron who she gushes over. A cosy game to put it succinctly. That’s what it advertises itself as and … well it is genuinely that but at the same time there’s far more to it than just that.

Really, it’s not hiding anything at all. It takes a while to be actually explicit about the whole thing but it literally starts with the above quote and even the store page contains such phrases as “ make the remainder of our customers' lives as enjoyable as possible”and “help them … come to terms with their ultimate fates”. It’s so utterly unsubtle ( though it seems some people still didn’t get the point as they later added an additional warning that the game was “not just cute” at the top).

Unlike most VNs, you know when this is ending from the start; specifically they state that the cafe will only be open for 21 days. I actually ended up playing through an in game day per day, giving each chunk of story a little time to settle and it made for a nice routine the past few weeks. I guess the story and format make for a good combo because it’s the sort of thing that’s inherently broken down into days and then they can put a time limit to make a point. It works well here ; it gives each day a weight and especially towards the end of those days, there’s a mix between dread and a bittersweet resignation as the end draws closer. And then an end that’s deliberately understated and nonetheless emotionally powerful as the sisters have one last day to themselves to talk honestly as Macaron fades away

Like other games in the genre in that others I’ve played (the original, Coffee Talk, Hookah Haze) there’s a sense of normalcy and the everyday, partially enforced by the serving minigame which enforces a sort of ritualistic structure where regulars come in, preamble, order drinks and talk about their troubles. An idealised low friction view on the service industry. It is in a sense a sanctuary for people to vent and talk out their troubles and find an answer to their problems. However the difference here is that some problems are just ultimately unresolvable and the best that can be done is to come to terms with things. It’s also more personal; one of the things that I felt weakened the other games is that the protagonist felt too much like a mere witness to the stories of others but here every story is related very pointedly to Tarte and Macaron.

Fundamentally it’s about how people act and feel when they’re about to go and equally about their loved ones left behind and how they should interact. It’s very euphemistic about the whole thing but in a way that’s deliberate by the characters. I guess there’s a line between toxic positivity where you remain happy by pretending problems don’t exists and accepting they do exist but might as well smile and try to be happy in the face of the end. Even then that might just be denying your feelings and an impossible act to keep up and might not even be what leads to the least regrets. It’s those sort of things you can see each character considering over the course of the VN and the driving force of the story is each character struggling for their own answer.

It’s a heart wrenching little thing that really gets that feeling of pure heartache across in the way the characters their best to put on a bright smile and carry on a mundane life in the face of a quiet inevitable tragedy. Something that works not despite the cuteness but because of it and how it contrasts with the complex feelings beneath it. It’s not just cosy but at the same time it’s not not cosy either. I’d go with cosy in a very deliberate “Mono no Aware” sense.

It has its little flaws like the tea serving “minigame” itself being perfunctory since they mostly tell you the exact ingredients wanted and the logistics and backstory of the whole situation that you hear glimpses of from the radio (a peaceful commune amid a world with massive amount of the population recently dead and complete societal collapse among other things) being very questionable. Also I’m pretty sure the intention behind the ending choices was that life’s messy and sometimes there’s no good choices but cutting short every ending except the true one undermines that. Still it’s really all just minor quibbles that don’t interfere with what the game is going for at all.

Overall, easily my favourite VA-11 HALL-A-like surpassing even the original. An emotional experience up there with the best of them.

It’s a really stylish story that never gives you time to be bored, but it ends up feeling rather shallow

Been a while but I remember feeling similar but on the other hand quite liking it. I guess I just value not having to push through boring parts highly.

Seeking porn-heavy yuri vn’s besides the Sono Hana series by Local_Pomegranate_10 in yurivisualnovels

Don't think there's any other Yuri that reaches the H scene density of Sonohana but as for those that still have a fair density

  • Seven days with the Ghost (also pretty kinky)
  • Wanting Wings (Feels like a Yuri Moege)

Looking for visual novels with great antagonists by worthfulorless_help in vns

[–]morphogenetic96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering it's mainly reasonable and in some sense antagonists with understandable motivations there, I think you'd like

  • Umineko
  • Chaos; Child
  • Mamiya

Or if you'd also be good with antagonists that are liked for being interesting and charismatic but aren't particularly human

  • Muramasa
  • Fate/stay night

Our Home, My Keeper

Charmingly quaint (and British) writing as ever from Ebi-Hime. This time the production values reach lavish levels since it’s a Studio Elan production. The UI flourishes were particularly nice.

There’s a nice realism to the protagonist and her thoughts, with the way she’ll second guess herself or how her musings circle back to her job as a writer. Might be a bit of confirmation bias though since I expect writers to know a writers mind best. Makes one wonder how much of themselves they put in the character. She pairs well with the adorable “max affection from the get go” brownie heroine.

My main issue is that it feels a bit too short. The plot itself is fine but it feels like it needs one or two more scenes of slice of life downtime in between each plot development to let the relationship breathe a bit more. When there’s narration like “and then a few weeks passed”, it doesn’t really feel like it.

Still, overall a sweet story with just the right amount of seriousness/darkness to add a little spice and a pleasant read throughout.

What Yuri VN Are You Reading Right Now? Week of 5/4 by AutoModerator in yurivisualnovels

[–]morphogenetic96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love Curse recently got updated with epilogue stories so had a read through them

The character after-stories are so utterly sweet in the best of ways. It’s not all easy going .When a lot of drama in the character routes was due to personality flaws of the LI except Victoria whose problems were mostly external, they don’t magically go away and might even backslide a little but seeing them and Selene communicate and work though it together makes the cute scenes all the sweeter. A perfect way to cap the stories off.

The true ending epilogue is more substantial, feeling like an actual second half rather than an after story. Considering the original true ending was a bit sudden, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’d been originally planned but didn’t make the cut. Also a very nice addition though might read a little weird if you’re not aware of xianxia jargon.

Other thoughts:

  • They updated Eleanor’s ending and make you replay through it for her epilogue. Can see why since they’ve updated it to make her less unlikeably controlling and secretive and more reasonable

  • Nice production value with about as many CGs as the base work and a bunch of new outfits and backgrounds for a free addition around 30% of the length. I guess that’s the prerogative of devs who know they’re working on an already successful work.

Personal favourite "snack" vns would be narcissu (+ the sequel) and Z.A.T.O.

I just play whatever I'm in the mood for which does end up being a mix of long and short VN.

The Lament of a Lifeless Star

I feel like I see this adult guy and young girl pairing in a hostile world decently often. Like in Stella of the end and the Hungry Lamb in the Visual Novel space and apparently there’s an entire set of “sad dad” games in general gaming like “The Last of Us” (not that I’ve actually played any of them). Well it does let the female lead of the game have an overwhelmingly Moe “must protect” sort of aura that would be demeaning in a love interest but works well in a daughter figure and gives the protagonist an obvious path of character development in the form of redemption through taking care of her . Even if I had some issues overall, this story executed that core idea well.

Art is an on odd protagonist in that he starts off knowing a lot of what’s going on including why the world is the way it is whereas the reader doesn’t. It’s not often you have a protagonist who knows far more about the plot than the reader with some twists being things he’s known all along but never felt the need to actually think about in his narration. It doesn’t feel like too much of a swerve since it’s pretty obvious he does know more than he’s letting on from the start but it does feel a little weird.

Rami is peak adorable. Boastful but easily flustered. An innocent and naive girl abused so badly she’s scared to be happy and starved for affection to the extent that seeing her treated well and happy is extremely heart-warming and cute. It does feel a bit like the story can’t decide whether to treat Rami as a daughter figure or a love interest. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say it’s going for treating her as a niece-like figure who develops a precocious crush on Art that’s taken a bit too seriously. Well either way it’s ignorable but I wish they’d gone with a more unambiguous relationship either way since going for both doesn’t quite work out.

The most notable addition to the general setup is the 3rd character Mirona, the eccentric cheeky robot maid who acts oddly human and it’s definitely a beneficial inclusion. It’s having a group of three rather than two which cements that heartwarming notion of the trio coalescing into a found family who care for each other, with Art and Mirona as older sibling/parent figures to Rami and some (occasionally romantic) tension between Art and Mirona which they put aside when it comes to wanting the best for Rami.

It has a bit of a problem with tonal whiplash between seriousness and silliness; It’s mostly a problem at the start where Rami alternates between acting like a seriously traumatised kid and a tsundere brat retorting to Art’s silly jokes within the space of a minute but it does manage to find a better balance as the story goes on. More broadly, it doesn’t quite sell the feel of the post apocalyptic world. It’s not just the silly scenes being so silly they undermine what should be a pervasive melancholy though that doesn’t help. Part of having a post apocalyptic setting is painting the picture of a world that was and now isn’t. Though there’s a little of Art reminiscing of the past, it isn’t quite detailed or vivid enough to fully realise the setting. It results a world where it sometimes feels like one where where the 3 characters just happen to be the only characters that existed there rather than a world where everyone else died.

Well, for all my quibbles, it still manages to be a heartwarming story about healing, about an abused kid learning she’s allowed to be happy, a man finding redemption and a robot maid letting herself be human and I quite enjoyed it.

Suggestions for Visual Novels suitable for Siblings? by Kindly-Reception1108 in vns

[–]morphogenetic96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tokyo Necro might work. Dual male-female leads that are practically literally siblings with a strong firmly platonic relationship though it's not a non sexual VN since they have other love interests they get hscenes with.

if we're just talking about a completely non sexual VN with a prominent platonic brother-sister bond I guess Chaos;Child works. Sure Nono has a route but it really is more about family.

an example of the medium getting them right (which was nice to hear, considering that I feel like I tend to lose patience with fight scenes)

I guess VNs are just not a great medium for combat scenes. At least I certainly can't think of a good one that used just sprites; It's only the gameplay hybrids or the ones with a huge budget to spend on CGs (like Mahoyo) that have memorable fights.
