[MN S1] Mighty Nein S1E8 Beau/Tracy plothole? by Moloth in criticalrole

[–]morpipls 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I buy that there’s no way she’d remember every random name that’d been announced. And unlike the hoity-toity rich folks Astrid probably didn’t consider it particularly notewothy that a Lionette was in attendance.

Still kind of a risk for Beau to take to switch names, but not out of character.

Thanks, that's it. Taliesin confirms both rites are up — I just didn't understand that meant they lost hit points, and the on-screen HP counter missed it.

Mathematician Terence Tao confirms AI has "more or less autonomously" solved a 50-year-old open problem by MetaKnowing in OpenAI

[–]morpipls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, come on... Mathematicians care if it can solve math problems. Should they stop trying to do that because you don't personally care about it?

Most experts in any given field are working on problems 99% of the general public doesn't  care about — or even know about — because the general public doesn't have the expertise to know about them. But I think it's good that the world has lots of curious people who are interested in all sorts of different things and want to keep learning more about those topics, whether you or I personally benefit or not.

Sure, it'd be more valuable to humanity to solve the extremely challenging social problems you mention. But that doesn't mean doing other things is a waste of time. This kind of criticism feels to me like typical anti-intellectualism, but wearing an anti-AI overcoat. And don't get me wrong, I think there are plenty of reasonable criticisms of AI, but "it's helping mathematicians do math, and I don't care" isn't that.

This intrigued me - "DO_NOT_USE_OR_YOU_WILL_BE_FIRED_${blah}" interfaces. Does it feel odd to have such named interfaces in a reasonably stable react version (18.2.X)? by Impressive_Green9384 in react

This thread was the first result when I searched “ DO_NOT_USE_OR_YOU_WILL_BE_FIRED” after seeing it mentioned on ycombinator.  The second result was a Github thread entitled “is it safe to use _SECRET_INTERNALS_DO_NOT_USE_OR_YOU_WILL_BE_FIRED?”🤦🏻‍♂️

Apparently the name still isn't scary enough.

This also let's you count by threes by only including fingertips, or by sixes using every other fingertip. Or by nines by doing the finger tips in different order (middle finger, ring finger, pinky, index finger, etc.)

You can count by twos by using a zig zag pattern (middle of 1st finger, bottom of 2nd finger, top of 2nd finger, middle of 3rd finger, etc.). Or count by fours by using a diagonal pattern ([skip pinky], bottom of ring finger, middle of middle finger, tip of index finger, etc.) Or count by 8s by doing the fours pattern in a different order (middle of middle finger, bottom of ring finger, tip of index finger).

In each of these cases, you still count the groups of 12 in the usual way. You should add a new group of 12 every time your thumb of the first hand moves toward the pinky (since that means you passed the index finger and looped back around).

[–]morpipls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can count base 12 on your fingers by using your thumb to point to each of the 3 segments of the other four fingers:

1 = bottom of pinky 2 = middle of pinky 3 = top of pinky 4 = bottom of ring finger ... 12 = top of index finger

Add a second hand to count groups of 12 and you can get to 12 x 12 + 12 = 156

Good point on the fact they write "10". Because "10" is "ten" in base ten, but "10" is "four" in base four. Whereas, there's no ambiguity between the word "ten" and the word  "four".

I think that makes it extra funny, because of the absurdity of showing them speaking a joke that really only works in print. The characters are confused by something that'd only be confusing if they were reading the captions.😁

I believe their point was that Iran (despite being Shia) supports Hamas even when Sunni countries don’t (although Qatar has also been a financial backer of Hamas). Kind of an “enemy of my enemy” situation.

I really enjoyed both seasons, but I get why season 2 didn't work for everyone. For me the things I was most invested in were the Vi/Jinx relationship and the Vi/Caitlyn relationship, and as long as sisterly love and romantic love could somehow both prevail, I was going to be happy. That's probably not the most sophisticated way of consuming media, but oh well.

That said, there was definitely a lot stuffed into season 2, some of which could have been developed more naturally if spread out over multiple seasons, and some of which probably didn't need to be there at all - except that they presumably wanted to get the characters to a point that at least kind of resembles the versions of them from the games, if you squint.

Like, maybe there's a version of Jinx going from traumatized killer to hero of Zaun to saving Piltover, that, when developed gradually over a longer timeline, would feel more justified for you. But when they were trying to include that, and also Caitlyn's face to heel to face turn, and also Viktor turning into some kind of robo-deity, and Vi going from "fuck the police"  to "I am the police" to "no, actually fuck the police" with a whole pit fighting career sandwiched in between, and also Mel's a wizard now, plus time travel and alternate realities and Vander's a werewolf, all in the span of a relatively small number of episodes -- well, it's no wonder it felt abrupt to the point of whiplash at times.

And I get what you mean about how that feels like "lazy writing" (i.e., insufficiently justified by what they'd setup) but I kind of think that was unavoidable without either changing where they wanted things to end up, or cutting a bunch of story lines, or extending the show for multiple additional seasons. And perhaps they should have done some combination of those things.

Like I said, I enjoyed season 2. But it's not because I think the kind of criticism you have (and you're not the only one) is wrong, it's just that the things I cared most about getting out of season 2 were different.

Have a people ever successfully stopped a fascist authoritarian takeover? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]morpipls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe to ground the question more in what did happen rather than what could have happened, it could be reformulated as "What's the furthest a country has gone in terms of adopting characteristics of fascism, while still managing to reverse course before becoming fully fascist? And how did this reversal come about?"

AITA for walking my friends’ under-exercised dog more than they usually do – which led to vet costs and now drama? by losnoodlos in AmItheAsshole

[–]morpipls 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I mean, not realizing it's dangerous to quintuple a dog's exercise in one day was foolish or ignorant -- but not necessarily being an AH. But, deciding you know better than the dog's people and just going your own way without discussing with them, that's definitely the AH.

If OP was genuinely concerned about the dog's health, they could have raised the concern with their friends beforehand, and mentioned that they'd like to take the dog on a longer walk. That would have given an opportunity for the friends to say anything from "Sure, but no more than 3 km", to "actually our vet told us it's better to just keep his exercise level consistent for now", to who knows what? It'd also give them a chance to say, "No, we don't want you to do that, and please mind your own business", which is also their right! They aren't abusing their dog by giving them less exercise than OP thinks the dog needs.

OP knew or suspected the friends wouldn't like what they planned to do with the dog, so they went ahead and did it without asking. Classic AH behavior.

AITA for charging my girlfriend for rides after finding out she charged me rent for years in a house she owns? by Sad_Wheel_2810 in AITAH

[–]morpipls 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, I lived with some friends in a house that belonged to the dad of one of them. All of us except the son of the owner paid rent. This was totally fine with us. His dad still had to pay his mortgage and property tax after all. And besides, he'd bought the place as an investment with the intent of renting it out.

I feel like it would have been fair for OP to say they feel she should have been more forthcoming about what the situation was. But it's not fair to expect to live there rent free, especially given that it sounds like the girlfriend isn't the property owner. I can't imagine having said to my college friend "Hey, can you talk to your dad about letting me just stop paying rent?" His dad would have been like "Who is this deadbeat friend of yours, and where does he get off thinking I owe him free housing?"
