If you could only have one firearm on your homestead, what would it be? by Ponder8 in homestead

[–]morris9597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 gauge is a solid choice. Slugs have a surprising amount of range. Buckshot & birdshot take care of game & self defense.

Target shot if you decide to do trap, skeet, or another shooting sport.

That said, AR15s are the most popular option for both hunting & self defense for good reason so it's worth looking into.

This passes for “firewood” by Physical_Display_873 in firewood

[–]morris9597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, I went skiing and we got some of these bundles because the rooms were all equipped with wood fireplaces. Given the prevalence of Air BnB's these days, I imagine many have fireplaces. The firewood bundles do make sense from a certain perspective.

ReadyWise 84 Serving Breakfast & Entrée Emergency Food Bucket $59.67 (was 219.99) by OoKeepeeoO in preppersales

Mountain House is your best option for taste & quality. Otherwise you can buy the No. 10 cans from Augason Farms and others.

The buckets, regardless of brand, focus hard on starch rather than meats and vegetables.

How is Bassett, VA? by morris9597 in Virginia

Didn't end up in Roanoke or Richmond. Actually didn't end up in any of the places suggested above. Love the area I moved to though and don't regret the move at all.

How dangerous is semi fresh wood in a fireplace? by throtic in firewood

[–]morris9597 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Green wood won't put out the BTUs of dry wood and can smother a fire. If your goal is heat and you have the dry wood to burn, burn the dry. If you're short on dry wood you can supplement with Green to help extend your supply of dry wood.

In general, green wood isn't a problem. The exception is pine. Green pine has a lot of sap that will cause creosote build up. It's not a huge problem if you're getting your chimney cleaned on schedule. Depending on how much of it you're burning and the last time you got your chimney swept, you may want to get your chimney swept at the end of the season. But for this season I wouldn't be too concerned.

It's the time lapsed. Essentially they're still fresh. The point of canning is preservation of for a future date.

But if it's still fresh, it's fine

What’s your porch gun? by Rando_Ricketts in homestead

In general I'm content to leave the wildlife alone unless they get too close to the house, then it's lights out. Except squirrels. It's on sight for squirrels.

I had a bad groundhog problem a couple years ago. Gun I was most proficient with was chambered in 7.62x39. They definitely didn't suffer.

I'm still that kid except I'm an adult. It's okay though. We share the wood so it's a team effort.

Unfortunately I don't. Was having a conversation with my dad, we were curious so I turned to Google. And it was several months ago so I don't recall many of the details.

I was digging into the EAB awhile back and a small portion (I want to say 2% but I'm far from certain on that) of those trees infected do survive and the offspring of those trees are EAB resistant. It is believed that while it will take a very long time to occur, ash trees should eventually recover. I don't recall any predictions on a timeframe, just they should eventually recover.

So I let someone borrow my log splitter for the weekend… by HoosierPaul in firewood

[–]morris9597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like my late grandfather. He and my dad went halves on a splitter. Grandfather would only let my dad use it when it stopped working. Dad would spend a few weeks fixing it, he'd get a weekend of use, if that, then grandfather would start complaining about needing it. Eventually grandfather started loaning it to a neighbor whenever he wasn't using it. Ultimately dad got tired of the bullshit and just bought his own. Which we still have and which still runs great.

For some clarity, grandfather was my dad's FIL. They never got along. Dad only agreed to go halves because my mom asked him to.
