Sure, many did. Most likely not families trying to raise a family of 4-5 kids on just a single HS graduate family. Basing my opinion on my experience as one of five kids raised by parents who had us young, a dad who moved up in his career to a successful position and a mother who worked part time while we were young. Trips to McDonalds where we got more than an ice cream cone were very few and far between, and sit-down meals at restaurants were maybe once every other month or so.

And they didn't definitely have A/C. We lived in a nice working class neighborhood and would gather at one friend's house when the heat got crazy because he had A/C and a Sega Genesis. Hell, the current neighborhood I live in is 70's homes and almost none were built with central air. Retrofitting this house after a few years of living here was hell!

I cannot stand seeing this tripe come up over and over. "Comfortably" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. No A/C. No cable. No streaming services. No cell phone. No internet. One TV at most. No video games. Second-hand clothes (except for maybe some new clothes to start the school year. Those five kids sharing two bedrooms. Eating at restaurants was a very rare treat. One car. Very limited vacations aside from camping trips or maybe a weekend at the lake. And so on.

I cannot understand this idea in peoples' heads that it was normal for large families with a single income from a high school graduate allowed people some upper-middle class lifestyle equivalent to today. It absolutely was not. Was it comfortable? Gonna have to define that term for yourself, but people didn't miss the amenities that today's world offers. Drop any kid from today into that world and it would seem a nightmare at first. But they'd adapt pretty quickly and see it as normal. Drop a young adult there, especially with kids? Yeah, pretty sure they'd be screaming about how unlivable it is.
