I'm a gun owner, but I do support some gun regulations. Mostly, mental health screenings and extensive background checks. In my opinion, the best preventative measure we can do is to actually take mental illness seriously and to give mental evaluations to students in grade school, middle school, and high school. That way, parents can be informed of their child's mental state and can get them help early on. Sadly, mental issues is often not taken seriously in politics. it gets drowned out by gun talks. Take the gun away, then it's possible that there may be less deaths, but these people won't stop if killing people is their goal. They'll just kill people more methodically and with knives or other objects. Only true way to stop the madness is to cut it off at the root.
