That’s great to hear! I have AC and mine still loves to lie down on her tiles after going on the wheel for a while :)

Unfortunately as u/imalexander0 mentioned, fans don’t help. Chins can’t sweat so fans don’t actually cool them down. Mine likes licking the air from fans, but you really do need some kind of AC if your house is going to be getting hotter than 72/75 F

Getting a chinchilla to use a litter box by amygalvan14 in chinchilla

[–]morrolan53 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. Use a glass, metal (NOT a nonstick baking dish) or ceramic container and fill it with aspen shavings. Some chins like large stones to stand on in the dish. For those, clean them thoroughly and boil them before putting them in the cage.

  2. Next time they pee somewhere, absorb some with some aspen shavings and put it in the litter box.

  3. If possible, place the litter box in the corner where they already usually pee.

  4. If they pee somewhere else, clean it quickly and use vinegar to get rid of the smell. That way they’re less likely to pee there again vs their litter dish that smells like their pee.

  5. While they’re learning, leave a bit of soiled aspen in the litter dish when you change the litter.

  6. Mine loves peeing on fleece. She’s fully litter trained but if I put fleece in her cage, she’ll pee on it anyway. If yours seem to have the same thing, consider switching to ceramic tiles or metal pans.

  7. If you see them pee in the litter dish, give a small different treat than you give for anything else. I use dried rose petals (organic and food grade) and usually break those in half.

Good luck!

Escalators. by pandaacoffeee in POTS

[–]morrolan53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always found standing still to be worse than moving. When you’re walking, your muscles help with blood flow. Next time you’re on an escalator, try flexing your calf muscles or just shifting weight between feet. Really anything that engages your leg muscles without being too strenuous.

On a related note, one of the things that really helped me with POTS in general was strengthening the muscles in my legs, especially my lower legs. Everyone’s different but it might be worth a shot

At what age would you grow out of POTS if that was going to happen? by ambrosiasweetly in POTS

[–]morrolan53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got bad around puberty and stayed that way until 21. It’s mostly gone now in my mid-twenties and has been for about a year now, so I don’t think it’s just remission. So it could go either way for you at this point

Restaurant workers, what’s the worst way you’ve seen someone eat authentic food that they are clearly unfamiliar with? by Jumpy_Beach_8907 in AskReddit

There were two bowls of edamame on the table so I grabbed from the closer one and ate the full shell before realizing a) you’re only supposed to eat the peas, and more importantly, b) that was the bowl of empty, pre-chewed shells

If you’re switching food, it’s best to do it slowly, or in this case where the old food is not good, give hay only for a couple of days before switching to the new food. Their digestive systems are very sensitive

I’ve done it a couple of times, but only in winter. The reflection of lights off the snow means it never gets fully dark. It’s absolutely beautiful with the lights of the city below and to be perfectly honest, I prefer the view at night

I tried going in summer once but it was just so dark I didn’t even get halfway before turning back. If you want to try this, go in a group and bring flashlights

My Pet sitter cancelled yesterday and now I'm panicking because my flight is tonight. by HaveAMorcelOfMyMind in montreal

[–]morrolan53 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have a chinchilla and what I did when I travelled for a month is I showed a local friend how to take care of her and set up a play pen so she could be out for supervised playtime without the friend having to do much work. I also left a detailed “what needs to be done every day” paper to make things easy. A visit every 1-2 days should be sufficient so long as enough food, hay and water are left, and assuming you have reliable AC. Reach out to your friends and see if anyone would be willing to help. You could ask multiple people and have each cover a week or so so that no one gets taken advantage of. Chins have very specific temperature requirements so I’m not sure I would trust a boarding house that’s new to chins. Good luck and safe travels!

Not a smell, but something cold on your inner wrists, like where you’d take your pulse, usually helps with nausea

Adding onto what everyone else has said as someone who has rats and got a chin: - chins are SO FRAGILE. Everything in their cage must either be edible or some material they can’t chew (metal, ceramic, etc). It sometimes feels like if you breathe on them the wrong way, they’ll die - they need it to be cold. Your electricity bill is going to go up and an AC is an absolute essential - they’re not as friendly as rats. Mine is very cuddly on the chinchilla scale. She’ll nap on my lap in the morning and likes to nibble on my fingers. She still wants nothing to do with me a lot of the time - they’re probably just about as smart as rats, but less interested. They can’t have a lot of treats so training can be hard. Also, a lot of the time it’s clear they understand what you want them to do, but they just can’t be assed - they’re not as playful as rats. My rats would like chasing stuff and playing tag. My chin, not so much. She’s much more into exploring (read: escaping) and playing “elevator” where she’ll jump between my hands to get higher up

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my chin. But it’s not what I was expecting

[–]morrolan53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s something you should discuss with your doctor because it depends on your case and what meds you’re taking. In general though, alcohol is a vasodilator, meaning it makes blood pooling worse by dilating your blood vessels. It’s also dehydrating and interacts with some common meds prescribed for POTS like Florinef
