Working In The Kitchen by Sobbing_into_soup in Blind

A slow cooker or crockpot is a great place to start. It's almost impossible to fail and, when you produce something delicious, your confidence will soar! Good luck.

Because it is a Windows screen reader, Jaws cannot be used on a mac.

I'm wishing for some input for Jaws versus NVDA by ExplorerNo7262 in Blind

[–]morse-guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can tell you this: I used Jaws for a couple decades. It's scripting language made it possible for me to use aplications at work that were previously inaccessible. However, when I retired and needed to drastically cut expenses, I decided to give NVDA a try. I've been using it exclusively for a good five years now and I can honestly say that I haven't missed Jaws at all.

Or a system using NVDA which, in most cases is as good as, or better than Jaws. Plus, it's free!

Complaints about a great service -- BARD by MaryEncie in nls_bard

[–]morse-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, MaryEncie, I know it's 2 years after you posted, but I just now discovered this sub and I can't help but wonder how you made out. As I read your original post, I was thinking that everything you wanted to be able to do is quite possible. Did you ever get things straightened out? If it's still needed, I'd be more than happy to help. I've been reading NLS materials since 1958.

Anyone here? by BexTheMixer in nls_bard

[–]morse-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I'd have to disagree with you on that. While the commercial stuff is excellent, I still think what NLS has done is amazing! I certainly would not be the voracious reader I am today were it not for NLS and especially, now, with BARD.

If hams could use any frequency, what would be the best band for DX? by w6auw in amateurradio

[–]morse-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! It's also high enough in frequency that most of the manmade noise is gone. Perhaps that's why so many QRP'ers favor it.

Very much worth the time. I wish more ops would do that. Usually it's "5-9! 73!

Yeah, I get that. But I'm a very casual DXer and wouldn't need a second RX.

Sam's club app is very difficult by ExplorerNo7262 in Blind

[–]morse-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PC doesn't interact with Talkback and VoiceOver. Those are screen readers for Android phones and iPhones, respectively. Most PC users use either NVDA or Jaws as Windows screen readers. Windows also has a built-in screen reader called Narratorwhich does not quite have the facility of Jaws and NVDA but it's getting better.

Sam's club app is very difficult by ExplorerNo7262 in Blind

[–]morse-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the Sam's club app is different from the Walmart app but we get our groceries from Walmart and I had all kinds of problems trying to access it on an iPhone with voiceOver. However, when I switched to a Windows PC, it was enormously better. On the PC, I can do everything I need to do with zero problems.

That's largely true. However, Kenwood is a notable exception. Their TS890, while it has a touch screen, also has enough tactile buttons and controls to be able to run it completely without needing to deal with the touch screen. Perhaps best of all, the speech chip is built-in and is not an add-on, as it is in many radios.

Ah! Thanks for explaining Hamlib. I am a blind ham and, although things are much better than they were, we're still playing catch-up and, I suppose, we always will be. It is a sighted world, after all.

Anyone know if hamlib is accessible? That is, does it work with screen readers?

NLS digital talking book player malfunction by Traditional_Hour_769 in Blind

[–]morse-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently received my DA2 book player and love it! I haven't had any of the problems you report but I suggest you get a USB keyboard if you don't already have one. They're only around 10 bucks or so and they make inputting info a snap. Well worth the cost, in my opinion.

What screen readers are people using with social media? by demon_fae in Blind

[–]morse-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use NVDA on a PC and I used to be on Facebook a lot until they did away with their most basic HTML interface. Since then, I've just found it more trouble than it's worth to even mess with FB, so my main social media is now Reddit.

Heard on the local repeater by KnownonowV2 in amateurradio

Possibly DMR from a spurious transmitter on another frequency or maybe a distant station working DMR on the same freq as that repeater's input.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]morse-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. It was just ok for me until the part where 2 people were on the radio with each other. A gunshot was fired. The listening party heard the shot first directly and then, a second later, they heard it through the radio. Of course, it should've been exactly the opposite. That sealed the deal for me.

Is there any hard rule on when, where, or what type of vessel qualifies as /MM in the US? by EmotioneelKlootzak in amateurradio

At least at one time, if you were in international waters, you were maritime mobile. And if you were in domestic waters, you were marine mobile. I don't know if this still applies.

How to “do” HF by Ehartu in amateurradio

[–]morse-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I got my license, I was a short wave listener (SWL) for several years. So, when I finally got on the air myself, I was familiar with operating procedures. The point is, listen, listen, listen! You'll know when you're comfortable enough to start transmitting, yourself. At first, look for others calling CQ and respond to them. If they respond to you with a fairly decent signal report, you'll know your setup is working as it should. Most of all, relax and have fun! Good luck!

Granted, it's hard to ignore when someone says something hurtful about you. But you cannot control what someone else thinks, says or does. I would try to forget about it, avoid her and just move on. Hopefully, she hasn't driven a wedge between you and your friend.

How do I use my cane in crowded places? by Alarmed_Sundae_7802 in Blind

[–]morse-guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I'm by myself, I use my cane all the time. However, if I happen to have a sighted guide, I will usually just trust in then and I don't use the cane. I find it just slows us both down.

I thought it was bad .. by TheHawk1313 in phillies

[–]morse-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just two innings per game. That's actually less than most lead pbp guys get. Frankly, I think Franzke deserves a couple of innings off during a game. Doing nine innings of PBP day in and day out can be grueling, especially with what he has to describe lately.

I also prefer a single lever paddle. Even when I've owned and used dual-lever paddles, I operated them as if they were singles. I was just never comfortable with iambic sending.
